Game consisting of 4 pp. instructions, six colour printed boards of the continents, 120 colour printed pictorial playing cards; contained within the original box (330 x 390 x 25 mm.), with colour printed pictorial label on upper lid. A question and answer game of geography for up to six players. There are twenty cards relating to Australia and the Pacific, including picture cards of Brisbane, Collins Street Melbourne, and Sydney, as well as one of an Aboriginal, Captain Cook, the Murray River, Lake Eyre, gold diggers, a kangaroo, platypus, echidna, black swan and a cassowary.Each player must attempt to collect twenty matching playing cards relating to his part of the continent (America is divided into North and South) by answering questions on mountains, rivers and towns. First edition: author's presentation copy of this study of Tahiti as well as the Loyalty Islands and the west coast of New Caledonia. The large map shows Tahiti and Moorea with an abundance of place names. Jules Garnier (1839-1904) was sent to New Caledonia as a young mineral explorer in 1863-66, and provides invaluable first person commentary on Oceanic culture during the period. A prolific writer, he became an influential engineer and industrialist. . Provenance: A. Martin (Garnier's presentation inscription to him in purple ink on the half-title).

Shortly afterwards he led an armed expedition against Vietnamese forces and captured Hanoi for a short time. The survivor of the most ambitious Mekong expedition of the nineteenth-century, Garnier travelled to China in 1873 to capitalise on his earlier experiences and advance French trading interests in the region. After travelling to Shanghai with his wife, Garnier ventured into remote central China for some three months without an escort or interpreter. Recalled to Saigon in August 1873, he was here drawn in local intrigue between the Governor of Cochinchina, Marie-Jules Dupré, and a French trader, Jean Dupuis. This version is extensively illustrated with wood engravings based on the original drawings by Delaporte and has an introduction by Leon Garnier. A large detailed and striking image of the annual sheep shearing festival held by the Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey, with Sir Joseph Banks a resplendent figure in the foreground. This great agricultural show was started by Frances Russell (1763-1802) who established a model farm at Woburn with 'every convenience that could be desired for the breeding of cattle and experiments in farming'. This included valuable experiments upon the respective merits of the various breeds of sheep. The sheep shearing exhibitions lasted for days and the whole English agricultural world was invited to this splendid event; the week concluded with banquets for the Duke's numerous guests staying at Woburn Abbey. London: John Harris, 1832. Engraved map, 345 x 432 mm. (image size), original hand-colouring. An attractive children's educational map of Australia, Asia and the east coast of Africa. The map is based on the work of the Abbé Gaultier, an educationalist originally from Piedmont, who had settled in France in 1780 and later fled the revolution to London. Gaultier began publishing his works in the late eighteenth century, and his philosophy of teaching geographical knowledge through games was very influential for game-makers and educational publishers on the continent and in England. He died in 1818 but his Geography continued to be reprinted. In 1815 it was "collated with the author's last Paris edition by Jehoshaphat Aspin", a cartographer. (see Juliana Bayfield, 'Games of Virtue and Learning', The La Trobe Journal, 1997). Aspin seems to have produced the first edition of this work in 1821. A splendid copy of one of the most famous English herbals, here in the second printing of the best edition, Johnson's 'very much enlarged and amended' version which first appeared in 1633. This massive herbal made the barber-surgeon and horticulturist Gerard (1545-1612) famous when its first version appeared in 1597, and it remained highly esteemed for more than 200 years. Scarce comparative study of non-Christian religious practices (religionum profanum), containing a striking assemblage of woodcut plates depicting exotic idols from the Middle East and Asia. This esoteric book on comparative religion was authored by Johann Ernst Gerhard, orientalist and professor of theology at the University of Jena. Johann Gerhard clearly identifies his own faith as a Christian of Jena (indeed, he was the son of the notable seventeenth century Lutheran theologian of the same name). London: John Murray, 1887. Eight volumes, octavo, single portrait frontispiece, 14 maps (12 folding and 5 coloured); understated half brown morocco, gilt spine with raised bands. A most attractive set of Gibbon's opus, first published in 1776 and here re-issued with notes by Dean Milman, M. Guizot and William Smith. The first volume includes a portrait frontispiece of Gibbon by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire remains an intriguing work; although in some respects superseded by the following century of (primarily German) classical scholarship, Gibbon style is fresh and intriguing, and the historiographical questions he raises are effectively timeless. .

London: John Faber, 1732. Very good condition.. Mezzotint measuring 350 x 250 mm. with detailed engraved caption. Mezzotint portrait of Admiral Charles Wager, an instrumental figure in the effective organisation of the British Navy in the first half of the eighteenth-century. Wager won his fame by capturing the rich Spanish prize Santa Cruz in mid-1707 and was promoted to rear admiral later that year. He became comptroller of the navy in 1714, and served both parliament and the admiralty upon retirement from active naval service. Experience at sea and sound temperament served Wager well in his dual career as a parliamentarian; he was widely respected with 'a very good understanding, great plainness of manners, and a steadiness of courage that no danger could daunt, with the same calmness in it that he shewed in the most ordinary acts of his life' (Burnet). This portrait was engraved by John Faber from the original portrait by Gibson. .

London: Religious Tract Society, 1885. An excellent copy.. Octavo, frontispiece and engraved plates, charming vignettes; in original gilt decorated green cloth. An unusually bright and fine copy. William Wyatt Gill (1828-1896) was an energetic English missionary active in the Pacific and New Guinea, author of numerous works containing valuable ethnographic descriptions of the Cook Islands and Rarotonga. Despite the author's obvious evangelical bias, Gill was an acute and intelligent observer of the indigenous cultures he encountered, and possessed a remarkable linguistic capacity that allowed him to significantly revise the native language of Rarotonga. Jottings from the Pacific draws principally from Gill's period of missionary work in the Cook Islands and Tuvalu and offers a compelling account of the assimilation of the gospel into Polynesian culture and day-to-day life. .

London: J. Gillray, n.d., 1798. Very good.. Etching; 320 x 360 mm., mounted. The original eighteenth century version of this rare transportation engraving, where the Parliament of Great Britain is depicted as having been condemned - the chair of the Speaker being inscribed "This House adjourned to Botany Bay". This is an example of the rare, original printing with both the date and the publishing details scratched through in ink. A later version was issued in the 1850s. Stephens in his great catalogue of the British Museum's print collection shows that this is the first of a series of four political satires by Gillray after Dalrymple, and one of a pair depicting government (the other two have agricultural settings). Showing a mad scene in the House of Commons, this is sub-titled "No. 1 Plate 1st. We come to recover your long lost Liberties...". Rare satirical cartoon of Sir Joseph Banks, ridiculed for using the Royal Order of the Bath for self-promotion. Portraits of Banks by the most famous artists of the day strengthened his position as the great statesman of science, recognised by the king with the award of the Order of the Bath for increasing Britain's scientific, imperial and commercial reputation. But as social conditions in Britain were harsh, every opportunity was taken by the leading cartoonists to attack the monarchy and the people seen to be celebrated as their appointed heroes. In this light, the award to Banks attracted easy criticism, only exacerbated by the change that the award represented to the nature of the Order: although inaugurated by George I, for most of the eighteenth century it had been awarded chiefly for political, military or diplomatic appointments. Very rare original documentation, listing paintings by John Glover, of works exhibited at the British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts (usually known as the British Institution), which had been founded in 1806 as a private club for connoisseurs, and to exhibit the works of both contemporaries and Old Masters. Admission cost a shilling. These exhibition catalogues are only very rarely offered for sale, and are scarce in libraries. An attractive inclusion in this issue is the folding engraved plate, which shows simple sketches of many of the eminent visitors to the exhibition. This particular catalogue dates from 1819, after Glover's fruitful sketching tours of the Lake District and Wales. London: Colburn, 1853. Spines uniformly sunned.. Two volumes, octavo; a very good, largely uncut and partly unopened copy in original green blind-stamped cloth. The Russian explorer's classic account of Japan, first published in 1817 and still a fascinating primary resource in the 1850s, one of the most valuable works of the period on Japan by an actual observer. Virtually no other first-hand study of Japan by a Westerner had been published, though by the 1850s a growing desire to force Japan to open her hitherto closed doors meant that this 'new and revised edition' was needed: it would certainly have been read with interest by Perry and others as the United States Expedition to Japan was being formed. .

Paris: Didot l'aîné, 1790. A very good copy.. Quarto, with ten folding engraved maps; later half red grained morocco. An analysis of the geographical knowledge of the ancient Greeks undertaken by Gossellin for a contest set by the French Académie Royale des Inscriptions. The ten folding maps are particularly interesting for comparing and contrasting the geographical ideas of the major ancient geographers including especially Erastothenes, Strabo and Ptolemy. They figure the Mediterranean and the classical world but extend as far east as the Indian sub-continent and the Indian Ocean, with the final map showing the East Indies as far south as the Nicobar Islands. On the basis of this work Gossellin was admitted into the Académie Royale des Inscriptions in 1791; in 1795 it was renamed and subsumed along with the other learned societies, including the main French Academy itself, into the Institut de France.
