Description:
Leipzig & Vienna: Bibliographisches Institit, 1904. First edition. Contemporary half-morocco. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF HAECKEL'S BEAUTIFUL AND HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL COLLECTION OF "ART FORMS OF NATURE", WITH 100 STUNNNING FOLIO PLATES, MOST COLORED. "The geometric shapes and natural forms, captured with exceptional precision in Ernst Haeckel's prints, still influence artists and designers to this day... Powerful modern microscopes have confirmed the accuracy of Haeckel's prints, which even in their day, became world famous. Haeckel's portfolio, first published between 1899 and 1904 in separate installments... illustrate Haeckel's fundamental monistic notion of the 'unity of all living things' and the wide variety of forms are executed with utmost delicacy. Incipient microscopic organisms are juxtaposed with highly developed plants and animals. The pages, ordered according to geometric and 'constructive' aspects, document the oneness of the world in its most diversified forms. This collection of plates was… Read More

Description:
London: W. and J. Innys and T. Woodward; W. Innys, T. Woodward and J. Peele; W. Innys, R. Manby and T. Woodward, 1733. First edition. Rebound; contemporary binding. Very Good. FIRST EDITION AND FIRST COMPLETE TWO-VOLUME EDITION OF LANDMARK STUDIES ON CIRCULATION IN PLANTS AND HUMANS [PMM 189]. First published in 1727 as Vegetable Staticks, Stephen Hales's seminal work on plant nutrition made groundbreaking advancements in understand sap movement and the discovery of root pressure-setting the stage for the achievements of Ingenhousz and de Saussure. This first edition of the first volume would receive a second volume in the 1730s focusing on human circulation and blood pressure, in which Hales shows both that "the capillary vessels are liable to constriction and dilation" and that "blood supply is largely determined by the state of contraction of the supply vessels, which are in their turn under nervous control" (PMM 189). This second volume was published alongside an updated, second edition of… Read More

Description:
Munich: np, 1973. first edition. nb. Very Good. HEISENBERG PROVIDES HIS RECOLLECTIONS OF THE ORIGINS OF NIELS BOHR'S CONCEPT OF "COMPLEMENTARITY". A UNIQUE ITEM, OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE FOR THE LIGHT IT SHEDS ON THE PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS AS SEEN BY THE PIONEERS IN THE FIELD. It is by now a commonplace observation that until their properties are determined by a particular experiment or measurement, quantum systems can have a dual or multiple nature - light can be both a wave and a particle, an electron can follow two distinct and inconsistent paths, and so forth. Niels Bohr, in a famous 1928 paper, "The Quantum Postulate and the Recent Development of Atomic Theory," described this aspect of quantum theory as "complementarity." As explained by historian of science Max Jammer, in his magisterial book "The Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics": "... Bohr asked himself how it is possible that [the equations governing radiation] relate together characteristics of radiation… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1925. 1st Edition. original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Heisenberg's critically important paper marking the foundation of quantum mechanics; Heisenberg was awarded the 1932 Nobel prize in physics "for the creation of quantum mechanics." "In June 1925, while recuperating from an attack of hay fever on Helgoland, an island in the North Sea, Heisenberg solved a major physical problem-how to account for the stationary (discrete) energy states of an anharmonic oscillator. His solution, because it was analogous to that of a simple planetary atom, launched the program for the development of the quantum mechanics of atomic systems... Heisenberg published his results some months later in the Zeitschrift für Physik under the title "Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen" ["On the quantum-theoretical reinterpretation of kinematical and mechanical relationships"]. In this article he proposed a reinterpretation of… Read More

Description:
np: np, 1930. Very Good. THE RISE OF PHOTOJOURNALISM AND MASS-MEDIA HELP MAKE HEMINGWAY ONE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY'S FIRST AMERICAN INFLUENCERS. After graduating from high school in 1917, Ernest Hemingway worked as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. This job exposed him to the media's growing addiction to sensationalism and taught him the craft of writing clear and succinct prose. Hemingway's journalism experience, his interest in boxing and big-game hunting, and his military service during and after the First World War enabled him to explore fiction writing about everyday people and to hone his innovative writing style. His adventurous lifestyle and the success of The Sun Also Rises (1926) coincided with the public's growing interest in photojournalism and lifestyle magazines, pushing Hemingway into the limelight. By the 1930s, Americans craved international recognition of their culture as one that surpassed that of Europe. Hemingway's trajectory from literary celebrity to international… Read More

Description:
Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST PRINTING of Hertz's first three papers on electromagnetic waves; the foundation for wireless communication. "Experimental proof by Hertz of the Faraday-Maxwell hypothesis that electrical waves can be projected through space was begun in 1887, eight years after Maxwell's death. The two main requirements were (a) a method of producing the waves, supposing that they existed, and (b) a method of detecting them once they were produced. Hertz found the first problem easy to solve. He used the oscillatory discharge of a condenser. Detection was much more difficult, because there then existed no means of detecting currents alternating at the high speed of these waves. Hertz in fact used an effect as old as the discovery of electricity itself- the electric spark. By inducing the waves to produce an electrical spark at a distance, with no apparent connection between the oscillator and the spark gap, and by moving the sparking… Read More

London and New York: Macmillan and Co. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH in original cloth of Hertz's collected papers on electromagnetic waves; the foundation for wireless communication. "By inducing the waves to produce an electrical spark at a distance, with no apparent connection between the oscillator and the spark gap, and by moving the sparking apparatus so that the length of the spark varied, Hertz proved beyond question the passage of electric waves through space" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 377). Originally published in German in 1892, the collected edition gathers together Hertz's important journal publications from 1887-1892 with the addition of an introduction in which Hertz surveys and analyzes his work of the past five years. PMM (Printing and the Mind of Man), 377 (for the German edition). Translated by David Evan Jones. Preface by William Thompson, Lord Kelvin. London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1893. Description:
Hollinwood/Lancs: Ferranti, Ltd, 1951. First edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF THE MANUAL FOR ONE OF THE FIRST VIDEO GAMES. VERY POSSIBLY THE FIRST COMPUTER GAME MANUAL. Although they were "keen to be involved" in the 1951 Festival of Britain, electrical engineering firm and computing pioneer Ferranti was still without an exhibit by late 1950. John Bennet, an employee of the firm, stepped up and suggested the construction of a machine that could play Nim, a matchstick game in which players compete to force a final move.

The Nimrod is considered to be the first or second computer game ever constructed, depending on how one defines the term, and is certainly the first to be constructed and played outside of North America. It was inspired by the Nimatron, an "electro-mechanical machine exhibited at the 1940 World's Fair in New York City" that also played Nim (Donovan), which isn't typically considered a computer, and followed only Toronto's Bertie the Brain, built in… Read More

London: Humphrey Milford, 1918. First edition. Original boards, custom box. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 750 COPIES, OF HOPKINS'S FIRST BOOK. VITA SACKVILLE-WEST'S COPY. "After Hopkins' death, Robert Bridges began to publish a few of Hopkins's most mature poems in anthologies, hoping to prepare the way for wider acceptance of his style. By 1918, Bridges, then poet laureate, judged the time opportune for the first collected edition. It appeared but sold slowly. Not until 1930 was a second edition issued, and thereafter Hopkins' work was recognized as among the most original, powerful, and influential literary accomplishments of his century; it had a marked influence on such leading 20th-century poets as T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and C. Day Lewis" (John Cowie Reid). Provenance: From the library of Vita Sackville-West, with ownership initials "V.N" (for Vita Nicolson, after her 1913 marriage to Harold Nicolson), and "Long Barn", the country house in Kent owned by… Read More

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1924. First edition. Original cloth. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED AND TWICE SIGNED BY HOUDINI: "To Frederick H Young / Best wishes / Houdini / Sept 19. - 1924 / 1:30 AM." Additionally signed "Houdini" on dedication page. Harry Houdini, the son of a rabbi and a doting mother, was born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary in 1874. After moving to Wisconsin at age 4 then to New York City at 13, Erik Weisz eventually became the legendary Harry Houdini, a master mystifier now remembered for his sensational escapes but known in his time as an unmasker of frauds. When Houdini's mother died in 1913 he lamented, "it was a shock from which I do not think recovery is possible." Her death led to Harry's interest in Spiritualism, a religious movement based on the belief that the dead could interact with the living, and he dedicated his book, A Magician Among the Spirits, to her. Harry Houdini met Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1920 and they corresponded regularly about their mutual… Read More

Paris: Jeanne Bucher, 1936. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, THE PRINTER JACQUES GROU-RADENEZ'S COPY, WITH TWO LONG PERSONAL INSCRIPTIONS BY HUGNET. WITH COVER MY MARCEL DUCHAMP. ONE OF ONLY 294 COPIES IN THE EDITION; AN OUT-OF-SERIES COPY LABELED "EXEMPLAIRE NO. G.H.". "This is Georges Hugnet's first volume of 'poemes-decoupages.' The title echoes Andre Mallarme's Un Coup de Des N'Abolira Jamais le hazard (1895), and Hugnet's poems, printed on the left-hand pages of the book, mirror the unusual spacing and various typefaces and sizes of Un Coup de Des. Hugnet had joined the Surrealists by 1932, and the collages on the right-hand pages, centered around nude images cut out of Paris Magazine, rehearse typical Surrealist themes... The cover by Marcel Duchamp spells out the title in letters containing the names of a whole Surrealist pantheon, including Sade, Freud, Rimbaud, Paracelsus, Swift, Heraclitus, Roussel, Chaplin, Jarry, Uccello, and Saint-Juste, and also a Man Ray… Read More
