Description:
Boston: Richardson, Lord & Holbrook, Hartford: H. & F. J. Huntington, 1831. First Edition thus. 8vo; 72pp; rebound in ¼ tan leather with black gilt-stamped label on spine and marbled paper over boards; words and music throughout; text age-toned, large dampstain on first 6 pages, first blank with early scribbling in ink, second blank with owner's name in pencil in a childish hand, "Lizzie Jenkins", about very good. Housed in a brown cloth folding box with gilt-stamped black leather label. This is the first appearance of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" set to music (p. 61). The Juvenile Lyre was edited by Lowell Mason and E. Ives, Jr. (musical educators and hymn-writers). Although the music to "Mary's Lamb" is not the tune familiar to us today, Sarah Josepha Hale's poem is exceedingly familiar. These famous lines first appeared in the periodical The Juvenile Miscellany, Sept.-Oct., 1830; the first edition in a book was in Hale's own collection POEMS FOR OUR CHILDREN, 1830. Chicago: Chicago Kindergarten Training School, 1891. First Edition. 8vo; 207pp; original blue gilt-stamped cloth, teg, ownership inscription in ink on ffe (Helen M.A. Smell / Medina N.Y. March 1891), some soiling to front cover, minor wear to tips and spine ends, endpapers with dark smudges, very good. Elizabeth Harrison (1849-1927) was one of the key figures in the kindergarten movement in this country. Greatly influenced by Froebel, as were most who became active in this movement; she studied with Susan Blow, a prominent American Froebelian. In 1883, she and Alice Harvey Whiting Putnam founded the Chicago Kindergarten Club, devoted to promoting their cause of improving education for the young. In 1887, she founded the Chicago Kindergarten Training School which eventually became the National College of Education in 1930. She was in great demand as a lecturer and in 1891 (incorrectly cited in DAB and NAW as 1890) published these lectures. This book has been reprinted more than 50 times and has been… Read More

[Europe], 1902. Page size: 8 x 6"; 25 leaves (of which 7 are blank) printed on card stock; containing 8 original photographs of women pasted in, 5 small ink sketches, 1 full-page pencil drawing, 1 half-page watercolor, and 3 full page finished watercolor pictures; original red morocco with gold initials R. C. H. at top left on front, gilt edges; moderate rubbing to corners and extremities of spine; very good. The text comprises about a dozen original poems written to Holmes by various women, such as "A Heaving Bosom," "La Nicotina," "A Traveling English Maid," and "A Traveling Girl.". Most of the sketches illustrate the verses. Several of the watercolors are highly accomplished, including the head of a dog, and a lovely Asian woman fishing off a pier with colorful fish in the water below. Rachel Holmes was a young American woman traveling in Europe and probably studying in France. The poems are all signed by her women friends and acquaintances; some are dated 1902. Miss Holmes evidently had literary… Read More

Description:
[Paris]: J. Hetzel, 1853. Folio, bound in 3/4 maroon morocco and pastepaper boards, gilt fillets, spine panelled, title gilt, top edge gilt. Eighty pages of this two-column popular edition of one of Hugo's early series of poems near fine. Hetzel, the publisher, was a constant companion of Hugo during their joint exile in Brussels. While the poet refused amnesty and remained a voice of conscience, Hetzel was repatriated to Paris and resumed his publishing. He was the first to bring out these cheap editions of Hugo's work starting in 1853. Jean-Adolphe Beauce (1818-1875), painter of battle scenes, was one of the early illustrators of these editions, whose drawings were translated onto woodblocks. This edition includes 19 wood-engraved vignettes after Beauce in-texte. It is probably excerpted from a four-volume octavo edition, Oeuvres Illustrees de Victor Hugo, Edition J. Hetzel, 1853-1855. With text in two columsn, it includes illustrations after Gavarni, Celestin Nanteuil, Gerard Seguin, Beauce, et… Read More
