Description:
London: Printed by John Pindley for Samuel Macham, 1613 A fair copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition in newer half leather binding. Classed as 'fair' because 2 leaves are in facsimile and a further leaf has lost its side margin which may have had reference notes. Bishop Joseph Hall (1574-1656) held high positions in the English Church and was known for his scholarship and skills in debate. He became a Doctor of Divinity in 1612 and turned increasingly from writing to preaching. Henry, Prince of Wales, made Hall his Chaplain in 1608, and he was invited by James I to preach a sermon on the 19th anniversary of his accession. Contents: title (blank verso); dedication 4pp; text 109pp; Finis. The title page has an elaborate archway design and there are decorative headpieces and initial capitals. The binding is in near fine clean condition with title label to spine and marbled boards. The endpapers are contemporary with the binding. Text paper is lightly toned but generally clean. Page edges are a little… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard, 1654 A good copy in contemporary full pigskin with blind ruled lines to boards. The pages have been cropped so the margins and gutter are quite small and the book is slightly bowed as if it has been held or kept in a pocket for ease of reference. It is certainly an entertaining read. Thomas Hall (circa 1610-1665) was a Presbyterian and, at the time of publication, was Pastor of Kingsnorton. His congregation dismissed him at the Restoration - and if his sermons resembled his writing, it is easy to imagine why. A small sample: 'Lastly, as no man may weare his owne haire excessively long, so he may not weare the long haire of another, be it of a man, a woman, or it may be of some harlot, who is now in Hell, lamenting there the abuse of that excrement'. The binding is sound, with a area of leather loss at the bottom of the spine and light general wear. Contents with title (blank verso); poems… Read More

Description:
Berwick: Printed by and for W Phorson; B. Law and Son, 1793 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy. Classed as 'fair' because it is lacking the frontispiece portrait and has been rebound in a more recent (?1960's) full leather binding. HMS Pandora was sent to recover The Bounty after the famous mutiny. It sailed on 7 November 1790 and picked up 14 of the mutineers before running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. George Hamilton was the ship's surgeon and the only eye-witness to write up an account of the voyage. This copy is in newer full leather with raised bands and faintly tooled title and author to the spine. New page marker. Contents: initial blank; title page; text 161pp; blank; table of latitudes and longitudes pp 163/4; blank. Page edges are untrimmed and the text is in very good clean condition with light toning to paper. There are some interesting pieces of ephemera: a letter from a previous owner to the Daily Telegraph in 1961, telling them about the book because they had… Read More

Description:
London : Thomas Bennet; John Nicholson; and Daniel Midwinter, 1705 A good copy of the 1st edition in recent full panelled calf bindings with 9 maps, 21 (of 22) plates, 2 frontispieces (one with loss) and 8 engravings in the text. John Harris (1633-1719) was an anglican priest and scientist, specialising in mathematics. He was admitted as an FRS in 1696. His written works were well-regarded and popular and Navigantium was published in 2 further enlarged editions. The 1st edition is relatively scarce and is sought after particularly for the first printings of the Moll maps. The bindings are in near fine clean condition with gilt-lined raised bands to the spine with gilt decoration in the compartments and title and volume labels. There is light scuffing. Internally new endpapers and blanks have been added. This set has been matched against the reference copy held by the Hathi Trust and matches it apart from a misplaced plate, a missing plate, a small misbound section in the appendix and a misplaced map… Read More

Description:
London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings. The binder has introduced a new front blank and has probably misbound the Introduction, which should… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed by J and W Paterson, 1848 A very good copy of this extremely scarce work on Orkney fauna. William Balfour Baikie was born in Orkney, and obtained a degree in medicine in Edinburgh. He became an assistant surgeon in the Royal Navy and went on to become a well known explorer. This work, published just as he started his career in the navy, was designed to fill a large gap in naturalists' knowledge of Orkney fauna, and he hoped that others would use it as a basis for further exploration. This copy is in a newer full leather binding with gilt titles to spine. There is the bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson (a well known Orkney book collector) to the front pastedown endpaper and both endpapers date from the rebinding. The contents are complete and very clean with light toning to paper and the occasional small mark.

Description:
LONDON: Groombridge and Sons A VG copy in the original green decorative cloth binding with gilt plant pictures and titles to front board and spine, and blind stamped decoration to rear board. The boards have bevelled edges. This work is generally attributed to Shirley Hibberd. It is clear from the Preface that it contains work from a number of authors, so it is likely that Hibberd had the editorial role. A number of the colour plates appear in 1870's copies of the Floral World - again edited by Hibberd. It is undated but is probably late 1870's/early1880's. With title page in red and black inks; colour printed frontispiece and 35 further colour printed plates, and numerous black and white illustrations - some full page. The binding is slightly shaken with a little bumping to corners and wear to edges including spine joint edges. The original endpapers are present. The contents are generally very clean apart from the very occasional brown spot. Some of the plant outlines can be seen faintly… Read More

Description:
London : J Johnson; R. Baldwin; R. and C. Rivington; G. Robinson. G. Wilkie and Co; T. Longman and Co; C. Law; etc, 1809 A fair early copy of this famous measuring guide for builders by Hoppus, Surveyor to the Corporation of the London Assurance. His first practical measuring guide was published in 1736 and it continued through various editions after his death in 1739. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding - measuring 8 x 21 cms (height). The binding is complete but the boards are adrift. There is some wear to the boards but a straight-forward leather case repair would produce a very good copy. Contents: folding plate; title page; preface; table of contents; explanations and usage (i-lii); half title; tables 214pp; advert for Hawney's complete measurer. Contents generally very clean - fep is creased; small ownership signature to verso of table; brown toning to margins.
