Raised bands with green leather title and author labels on the spine. Bright gilt flowers in the spine panels between the labels. Hasselquist was a student of the renowned Swedish botanist and ecologist Linnaeus. He traveled to Palestine, Syria, Cyprus, Rhodes and Chios to investigate the plants and natural history of the Levant, and he was the first to do so systematically. He died at Smyrna in 1752. His work was edited and published by Linnaeus posthumously in Swedish, as Iter Palaestinum, in 1757. The maps in volume two which are difficult to handle and usually damaged have been professionally repaired, and placed in a map case that has a matching black binding. Inside clean and tight, with no foxing or browning. I doubt that the British could have done their Raj (rule) in India without this book. It is a classic on gear, training, food, shoeing, etc. .

An author, missionary and academic in China from 1890 to circa 1914, his wife a physician to the Emperor Dowager and her royal family. He taught science at Peking University. Home Life draws heavily on his wife's knowledge of women and children and their very private home life, not easily visible to a Westerner at that time. And of course very different from China home life a century later. Original black cloth with bright gilt title on the front and spine. The back hinge cloth has split, but this has not affected the solidity of the hinge. Protected in a mylar dust jacket. Very clean and tight inside, with a hint of foxing on a few pages. Quite scarce and a bargain because of the unattractive rear cloth split. .
