St. Louis: Haberly, 1943. Finely bound by Haberly in full red-brown calf with Haberly's all-over ornate and pleasing stylized gilt work which has become quite recognizable. Limited to only 48 copies. Beautifully patterned green endpapers. This copy is inscribed by Haberly in the form of a poem, on the leaf before title page: "To Dorothy & Carroll, Our worst between us and the starry quest, Our Best Between us and jungle night, We are not ever wholly damned or blest. We are not ever wholly wrong or right: Divinity that makes poor dust so proud Is lightning leaping from a sombre cloud, Leaving the long gloom deeper for its light- affectionately, HAB." Written in fountain pen. Fine condition. Scarce thus.

Finely printed verse by the poet, printer, illustrator, bookbinder and one-time Rhodes Scholar who briefly served as controller of the Gregynog Press in Wales before returning to the United States. Laid-in is a typed sheet (carbon) with five short poems by Haberly, with a pencil notation "Belongs with this book. May be unpublished poems." Some mildew staining to covers, else very good. Scarce thus.

Beautifully bound by Loyd Haberly in rich salmon morocco with two central geometric inlays outlined in bold gilt, and surrounded by gilt pointille circular border with the Latin words,"Vera Sequor (I follow the truth) as well as the initials "NHR." Border in lace work pointille near the edges, and with stylized blossoms at each corner, also int pointille. Spine with five thick bands, as characteristic of Haberly bindings, and four compartments bordered in gilt, three with lettering. TEG. A wonderful Presentation Copy, written in bold black fountain pen on free inside fly: "I wonder oft, yet cannot see/ Why there is only one of me:/ So much to do.' Fourteen full-page color illustrations by Ha-Ga (Anna Goslawska Lipinski) was an accomplished Polish book and magazine illustrator (1915-1975), born in Warsaw and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. In this book, Ha-Ga teams up with her husband Eryk Lipinski, one of the co-founders of the left-wing satirical magazine Szpiki. Extremely scarce and important stylized and anthropomorphic design and illustration. Near fine copy of a scarce book.

From grouping of books owned by William Bell Scott. Though not signed by Scott, there is a four-page prospectus laid in for the book which has two holograph lines in Scott's and as well as two dates ("Legends of the Morrow, 1879, etc. ...1877 or 1878"). A perfectly fine copy. At time of writing, not copies of this scarce book on the market.

Exquisite woodcut illustrations by Arthur Hughes including a full-size frontispiece, eight half-page woodcut illustrations at the start of each chapter. With first state ads in back: "Dr. Hake's Poems, Madeline" which was published in 1871, and "Chapman & Hall Publication," containing "Thomas Carlyle's Works," also issued in 1871. An incredibly scarce Pre-Raphaelite book, with intimately PRB illustrations by the famed Arthur Hughes. No other copies located for sale on the internet at the time of writing. Very fine condition.

Beautifully bound by Captain Gladstone in full green crushed morocco with elaborate and exquisitely executed gilt vine and blossom work covering most of both covers and spine, with both front and back covers adorned each with 10 onlays of tudor rose blossoms in red, impressed in 10 small pieces (for each blossom) into a gilt background. Truly impressive. Wide gilt decorated inner dentelles, typically found in Gladstone bindings, with 20 Tudor rose onlays matching those on the covers, gilt tooled strapwork. Gorgeous light salmon colored silk moire doublures and matching free flies in paper. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Single fillet gilt ruling to side edges of boards, and gilt cross-hatches to top and bottom of spine. with similar red and gilt designs, superb pink silk doublures. Signed "CEG" inner dentelle. Full fine-pebbled red calf with attractive geometric and floral strap-work design in gilt on covers, blind-stamped border cross-hatch patter. Spine with raised bands and elaborate gilt floral strap-work and lettering, marbled endpapers. Dozens of full and half-page woodcut engravings by artists who later to blossom in the 1860's in book illustration, such as Paton, Tenniel, Pickersgill, Gilbert, W.B. Scott, Crowquill and others. Also of note, early engravers showcased here such as G. Dalziel, Edmund Evans, Vizetelly, and W.S. Linton. "The most ambitious English book with wood engravings during the period under survey" (Gordon Ray). Calf binding shows slight wear along margins of spine and corners, but overall near fine, very fresh and bright. Contents clean and bright with occasional soiling and brown-toning predominantly in volume 1.

First Edition. 228pp. Original publisher's forest green decorative cloth with bold gilt central circular design bearing the author's monogram and a floral motif, spine gilt. This is the first edition of the author's first collection of poems, one of only 500 copies, with 31 illustrations (13 full-page, including frontispiece) by Thomas Hardy. Top edge gilt, others uncut. The covers are significantly blemished with water fading... however, priced accordingly, and quite a rare Hardy title, who considered himself primarily a poet. His poetry in "Wessex Poems" explores the themes of rural life, love and loss, the ravages of time, death and the inhuman ironies of war.

With green and citron onlays to upper portion of front covers, title, author, volume number and date on upper covers. A.E.G. Edges and margins of spine somewhat faded. Superb engravings throughout. Morocco book label of Julius Wangenheim (1866-1942), a San Diego banker, civic leader and bibliophile who became interested, during the last twenty years of his life, in developing a collection that would show the history of the book. In 1911 Wangenheim became involved in the planning of the Panama-California Exposition.
