In his lifetime, Housman had published only two small but superb collections of verse : A Shropshire Lad and Last Poems. In his will, he left his manuscript poetry notebooks to his brother and literary executor Laurence, authorising him to publish such other verse as seemed to Laurence to be complete and not inferior to that previously published. Laurence eventually published something over half the surviving 'complete' material (as More Poems, and Additional Poems), and then attempted to remove or delete from the notebooks the rejected material while preserving his brother's manuscripts of the published material.
