Description:
University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis, first edition, 1955. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, plates. xii, 146 pp, facs. The story - and result - of a fascinating attempt to recover lost poetry by A E Housman. In his lifetime, Housman had published only two small but superb collections of verse : A Shropshire Lad and Last Poems. In his will, he left his manuscript poetry notebooks to his brother and literary executor Laurence, authorising him to publish such other verse as seemed to Laurence to be complete and not inferior to that previously published. Laurence eventually published something over half the surviving 'complete' material (as More Poems, and Additional Poems), and then attempted to remove or delete from the notebooks the rejected material while preserving his brother's manuscripts of the published material. The hacked-about notebooks passed to the Library of Congress where it became apparent to the author of this work that, notwithstanding Laurence Housman's attempt permanently to… Read More

Description:
Jonathan Cape, London, first edition, 1978. Cloth, gilt horse illustration on cover, oblong 4to, 27 x 29 cm,. 64 pp, plates, ills. From the blurb: Haddelsey's Horses is the first collection of Vincent Haddelsey's paintings to be published. Although exhibitions of his work have been held in Britain, Haddelsey is probably not as widely known as his talent deserves. However, in this country, his work is to be found in the Royal Collection, in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum; and in the United States, in the Paul Mellon Collection. His reputation in Europe has been well established for many years and in 1969 he won the International Grand Prix for naif painters at Lugano in Switzerland. Haddelsey was brought up in the Lincolnshire countryside and throughout his life horses have always been important both in work and play. This love and knowledge of horses comes through all the time in his paintings, whether they are reflecting the rural hunting scene or the town ceremonial… Read More

Description:
Greenwood Press, Westport, first edition, 1997. Cloth, 8vo,. xii, 514 pp. This reference book is a guide to the rich and diverse literature of Tudor England. Included are entries for nearly 100 people who wrote between 1485 and 1603. The entries are written by expert contributors and are arranged alphabetically to facilitate use. Some of the authors profiled are major canonical figures, such as Shakespeare, Spenser, and Donne. But the volume also includes a significant number of entries for women writers, whose work has been unjustly disregarded until recent years. While most of the authors were from England, the volume contains entries on figures such as Erasmus, who, though born in another country, wrote important works in England, and on writers such as Machiavelli, Calvin, Ariosto, and Tasso, whose works were almost immediately adopted, translated, or otherwise made part of Tudor culture. Each entry provides a brief biography, which is followed by a discussion of major works and themes, a review… Read More
