Autograph letter signed by the English physician and poet. Undated but circa 1880s. Addressed to "Dear Mr. Cotton" [editor of The Academy magazine of London.] Hake writes to submit a sonnet for publication. Signed "T.G. Hake." Good overall with mailing folds, creasing, and an old ring mark. On thick, laid paper. 4.5 x 7 inches. Hake's early prose epic Vales (aka Valdarno) was admired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, founder and central figure of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A close friendship developed, and Hake became a member of Rosetti's artistic circle. He was later companion and physician to Rossetti during his declining years. (Note: The sonnet Hake references in this letter may have been Venus Urania. It was published in The Academy April 19, 1884.)

Three (3) identical broadsides from 1942 for Sunday train excursions to New York City from Boston / Back Bay and Providence, Rhode Island. Fare was $3.85 round-trip with a "Special Coach for Women." Dated 2-6-42 at the bottom. Vertical format, 6.75 x 18 inches long. Blue lettering on white background. Train logo in Art Deco style. Original printings, not reproductions. Great condition with center fold. Intended for brief display before being discarded when schedules and service changed. Given the condition, it doesn't look like these were ever used. Buyer will receive all three broadsides, as pictured.

Taken in the 1920s by German travel photographer Kurt Hielscher (1881-1948.) Printed in sepia tone and captioned in the lower margins. (Some captions in German only, but others with translations in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.) xiii, (1) + the 304 pages of photos. Index of names and places. Brief introduction by Hielscher in German, a b&w map of Germany, and a facsimile of a handwritten letter by German painter Hans Thoma before his death in 1924. Autograph quote signed by the British novelist, author of The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and creator of the Ruritanian romance genre. In black ink on a stiff vellum sheet that measures about 6 x 10 inches. Probably written for his government propaganda efforts during the First World War, for which he was knighted in 1918. The quote reads: "Homage to our French allies – bold in / thought / daring in action, loyal in friendship, / and generous in appreciation – / Anthony Hope Hopkins." Near Fine with some wrinkling to the vellum, not affecting the text. Blank verso, apart from brief pencil notations. An uncommon item from Sir Anthony Hope Hopkins, better known simply as Anthony Hope (1863-1933.)

Catalog of a 2016 Dartmouth exhibition by Eric van Hove (b. 1975), a Belgian conceptual artist born in Algeria, North Africa. Outer folder (12 x 9.5 inches) encloses an accordion-style foldout that measures more than 6 feet in length. One side is a panoramic color photograph of van Hove's intricate sculpture V12 Laraki, a mixed-media replica of a Mercedes Benz 6.2 L V12 engine. Created in collaboration with Moroccan craftsmen working in traditional materials, including wood, copper, silver, bone, leather and mother of pearl. The reverse side contains the text of an interview, entitled "Sculpture from a third dimension: V12 Laraki project, Utopia, and Ethics of artistic practice: Ugochukwu-Smooth C. Nzewi in conversation with Eric van Hove." An homage by van Hove to modern engineering and time-honored craft traditions. Self-published in Washington, DC, in 1889. 1st edition. [BAL 9371.] A scarce early title by Richard Hovey (1864-1900), noted American poet, composer and playwright. An ode in verse to Mary Day Lanier, the widow of Georgia poet Sidney Lanier (1842-81.) 16 + (1) pages. Printed recto only, with blank versos. Laurel leaf vignette to title page. Later plain gray paper wraps, bound with red ribbon through twin hole punches at the spine. A VG copy of an elusive title by Hovey, who is perhaps best remembered as author of the Dartmouth College alma mater, "Men of Dartmouth."

Original autograph & portrait of Elbert Hubbard, writer, publisher, and philosopher who founded the Roycroft artisan community. Hubbard was a leading exponent of the American Arts and Crafts movement from the late 19th century to his death aboard the Lusitania in 1915. Signature and portrait appear to have been removed from a book. Portrait is mounted on a larger page of heavy paper stock. The autograph is on the same paper. Portrait size with borders is 7.75 x 10.25 inches. Signature is bold and clear and measures 4.25 inches across. Foxing to the blank areas of the portrait mount. Image itself is clean and unmarked, as is the signature.

A scarce biographical memoir of her mother, Harriet L. Sykes Humphrey (1832-1910), a social reformer and religious lecturer who was an early influence on future Nobel laureate Jane Addams. 292 pp. 8vo hardcover. Gray paper-covered boards with red lettering and decorative border. Fair to Good only. Front hinge cracked but holding. Binding weak along the front joint. Chipped at head of spine about one-quarter inch, not affecting the spine label. Text clean and unmarked. Protected by a new clear archival dust jacket. An imperfect but intact copy.
