Description:
1857. HABERSHAM, A.W. MY LAST CRUISE; or, Where We Went and What We Saw: Being an Account of Visits to the Malay and Loo-Choo Islands, the Coasts of China, Formosa, Japan, Kamtschatka, Siberia, and the Mouth of the Amoor River. By A.W. Habersham, Lieut. U.S. Navy, and Late of the North Pacific Surveying and Exploring Expedition. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1857. First edition. 8vo., brown cloth with decorative blind-stamp, spine lettered and decorated in gilt; frontis, pictorial half-title; 507 pp. + 28 plates + back ads. Lacking ffep, else very good and bright with some mild edgewear and a few edge nicks to the cloth. Internally, mildly over-opened in spots, with a few signatures just starting and an occasional touch of foxing. The overall impression is of a much better than average copy of this delicate book. An interesting and important primary resource on pre-Restoration Japan.

1925. [MAVO] HAGIWARA Kyôjiro. SHIKEI SENKOKU. Tokyo, 1925. Prelims, 11pp, 6pp., 161pp., 5pp., finals. Profusely illustrated throughout in linocuts by Okada Tatsuo, Toda Tatsuo, and Yabashi Kimimaro. Wrappers designed by Okada. With the Okada-designed slipcase and very scarce as such. Perhaps the most important Mavo-inspired volume. Here in the second issue with the addition of color to the covers and a few of the plates. A cornerstone of any MAVO collection. The spine is perished but preserved, the covers and slipcase are a bit rubbed and a film of some sort has been laid down on the slipcase spine. But all and all, a good copy of this fragile work. For more on its importance, see Weisenfeld's book, MAVO, JAPANESE ARTISTS AND THE AVANT GARDE, pp. 97-101.

Included are Fusetsu, Hakutei, Kyoshi, Hekigoto^, Izan, etc. Without colophon or preface, but this well-known limited private production is almost certainly from the mid to late teens of the twentieth century and was probably created in To^kyo^. There are 12 sheets laid into this orihon folding album in brocade covers, all in the (original?) chitsu case. A few wormholes but otherwise quite clean and in very good condition. $1,750.00.
