Complete set of the revised edition of the Bibliotheca Belgica: a comprehensive bibliography of books printed in, or relating to, Belgium. It includes all books printed in Belgium up to 1600, and major publications up to 1800, classified in alphabetical order. The Belgian librarian Van der Haeghen (1830-1913) started the project in 1879.Bindings slightly rubbed along the extremities and slightly worn along the hinges, otherwise in very good condition.

The work first appeared in English in the London geographical journal .... The present French translation was done by J. Passama and J. de la Vaissiere de Laverge. The Persian Gulf was growing in importance for the British during the 19th century because of the "strategic nature of the coast of South Arabia and the necessity for checking the advance of the Turks in that direction. In addition, because the company needed to establish coaling stations for its increasing fleet of steamships, a number of vessels were dispatched to locate suitable sites" (Howgego). Among the most important expeditions was the voyage of the Palinurus under command of Haines. [4], 216 pp.First edition of the author's own epitome of his great flora of Switzerland, Historia Stirpium Indigenarum Helvetiae Inchoata (3 folio volumes with about 1000 pages, 1768). The Swiss physiologist, botanist and poet Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) here gives a numbered list of 2490 Swiss plants, essentially the same as the 2486 in his monumental flora, but with only a brief list of morphological characteristics and references to the literature. Linnaeus was still alive and completely dominated botanical nomenclature for centuries, so Haller's names were no doubt doomed regardless of their merits. This makes the present copy especially valuable and remarkable, because the annotations in the margins, and the manuscript index, appear to give the Linnean names. This makes it a striking fusion of the Linnean nomenclature and that of Haller himself. Frontispiece plus [8], XXXII, [2], 115, [2], [1 blank] pp.; 48 ll.First printing in any language of three important manuscripts on falcons and falconry: a 12th-century Turkish treatise on falconry by Mahmud Ibn Mehmed al-Bargini, "Baz nama" [= Falcon book] (in the original Turkish and in German translation); the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I's ca. 1515(?) "Über die Falknerey" in the original German; and a shorter Greek treatise on hawking, "Hierakosophion" [= Hawking apprenticeship] in the original Greek and in German translation, a variant form of part of a 13th-century work by the Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII (1223-1282). Little is known about the author of the Turkish treatise, but he came from Anatolia on the southeastern coast of what is now Turkey, where he apparently worked in service of the Bey of Mentese. Very rare series of 12 beautiful large tinted lithographed plates showing the horses from the Royal stud at Hampton Court, after designs by the notable engraver and illustrator William Harvey (1796-1866). They include: an Arabian mare and foal by The Colonel; The Colonel; Nanine; Bay Arabian, "the purest cast, from the Imaum of Muscat"; Wings; Actaeon; Grey Arabian and foals by Actaeon; Black Arabian; Gulnare; Fleur de Lis; Belvoirina; and Maria. The most famous of these is the British-bred The Colonel (1825-1847). The plates show the horses set against an imaginary background and each has a caption giving information on its lineage. We could locate only three other copies, including two in the British Royal collection.Harvey started out as the (favourite) pupil of the acclaimed Thomas Bewick, who described him as one of "the first in excellence … who both as engraver & designer stands preeminent at this day" (Memoir, p. 200). [4], 391, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a catalogue of the plants in the Kebun Raya Bogor, the large botanical garden near Jakarta (Batavia), Indonesia, formerly known as 's Lands Plantentuin te Bogor. It contains 1298 entries, including many east- and south-east Asian species, with new binomials, followed by an appendix and two indices, one listing vernacular plant names, including Japanese, Javanese, Malay and Sundanese. The word "alter"/"tweede" on the title-page refers to an earlier catalogue, entitled Catalogus horti Bogoriensis, edited by Blume and published in 1835.Internally in very good condition, with only an occasional spot. 12 lithographed plates.Beautiful album, containing a series of 12 numbered tinted lithographs of sights in Argentina and Uruguay, including many ships and harbours, drawn by Adolphe d'Hastrel and lithographed by D'Hastrel himself, Cicéri, Muller, Bayot, Sabatier and Clerget. Each has a caption in Spanish and French. Adolphe d'Hastrel (1805-1874), born in Alsace, spent his youth in Tours and surroundings. He started drawing at an early age, concentrating on the Alsacian landscapes. Later he concentrated on America. The three plates that D'Hastrel lithographed himself are signed and numbered in the stone, 41-43. This series of lithographs is of great ethnological interest. In very good condition, with most plates slightly and 1 seriously foxed, some marginal water stains and 1 plate with a marginal abrasion, not affecting the images.l Benezit V, p. 428; Thieme & Becker XVI, p. 116; not in Sabin; Palau.

(2), lxij, 510, (2); (4), 452 pp.Third revised and augmented edition of this elementary treatise on physics by Abbé René Just Haüy (1743-1822), celebrated mineralogist and crystalogist. The first volume is devoted to the general properties of bodies, attraction, the (now obsolete) caloric theory, water, air and electricity; the second volume treats magnetism and light. The work was used as school book and thus became an influential reference work. Haüy is best remembered for his important research on minerals and the electric properties of crystals. He cooperated with Lavoisier and had a strong influence on French science, one of his students being Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. [8], 1260; [16], 919 pp.Dutch edition of the popular German encyclopaedia Reales Staats-, Zaitungs- und Conversations-Lexikon by the German geographer and scholar Johann Hübner (1668-1731) followed by the translation of his Curieuses und Natur-, Kunst-, Berg-, Gewerk- und Handlungs-Lexicon. The encyclopaedia was published in at least 25 editions until the end of the 18th century and translated into several languages. The editions were much enlarged, especially during Hübner's lifetime. The edition here translated contained already 26.000 entries. Hübner was known as a committed teacher and rendered outstanding services to geography and religious education.The first edition of the Dutch translation of the first part appeared in 1732 with the title Staats- en koeranten-tolk in Leiden, followed in 1734 by the second part: the translation of Hübner's Curieuses und Natur-, Kunst-, Berg-, Gewerk- und Handlungs-Lexicon. Nearly all give the artist’s name, but most appear only once or twice, though “Arnout” seven times (some dated 1828 and 1829) and “Deroy” four times. A masterpiece in the literature of exploration, it contains interesting details on natural history and the Indian tribes of the region. Travelling overland from the Hudson Bay to the Arctic, Hearne met with many dangers, and very realistically describes the life and customs of the North American Indians. Tracing the Coppermine River, he reached the Arctic Ocean on 17 July, 1771, thus establishing that there was no Northwest Passage through Hudson Bay. In spite of the obvious importance of Hearne's expedition, the results were only published in 1795, after La Pérouse had discovered Hearne's manuscript at Hudson Bay. XVI, 264 pp.First edition of a handbook to the simple and compound medicines contained in the Pharmacopoea Castrensis Borussica (the Prussian pharmacopoeia). The work was compiled by the German doctor August Friedrich Hecker (1763-1811) and was intended for the use of field doctors and surgeons of the German army. The text opens with a brief introduction on the use and effects of the medicines, followed by 280 medicines, arranged alphabetically, with comments on their medicinal properties and uses. With some inscriptions in ink on the title-pag and some notes on the last flyleaf. Some faint water stains. Binding rubbed along the extremities. It presents the example par excellence of the fine books intended to instruct and amuse the Dutch "jeunesse dorée". The book, containing the youth-poetry of Johan van Heemskerck (1597-1656), is divided into four parts. [170] pp.First edition of a collection of Latin dialogues and other short educational texts on religious and philosophical subjects by Alexander Hegius (ca. 1433/39?-1498), a pupil of Thomas à Kempis and Rudolph Agricola and since 1469 rector of the famous Illustre school at Deventer, where he shared quarters with the printer Pafraet, who published the book. Most of the dialogues were first printed in the present edition.Hegius's erudition attracted many pupils, including Erasmus, Murmellius, Herman Busschius, Henricus Agricola, Johannes Caesarius and Herman Torrentinus. It forms a complete handbook in three parts, the first covering fortifications of both regular and irregular form, the second covering siege techniques and the third the defence of cities and fortifications. Christoph Heidemann (d. 1684) was military engineer to the Elector of Bavaria. He was a follower of Daniel Specklin (1536-1589), but introduced many improvements in technique and equipment. Like Antoine de Ville (1596-1656), he strongly recommends the construction of orillons at the corners of fortifications to cover the flanks, an idea the Dutch school had rejected. [32], 410, [18] pp.Second (and last early) edition, enlarged by the author, of a rare extensive history of North Friesland (the west coast of the Duchy of Schleswig in present-day Germany) from its mythological origins to 1667, by Antonius Heimreich. The five town plans on the frontispiece depict Tönder (now in Denmark), Bredstedt, Husum, Garding and Tönning. The map was engraved by the brothers Matthias and Nicolas Petersen, goldsmiths in Husum, and the frontispiece by Matthias alone. The present edition includes the author's dedication to Christian Albrecht (1641-1695), Prince-Bishop of Lübeck and Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. Heimreich (1626-1685) was a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and came from a family of Schleswig ministers.With an 1851 purchase inscription (price in dollars) by A.J. Skilton.
