Description:
Paris: Librairie Plon,, 1927. First edition, first impression, limited issue, number 447 of 500. Inscribed in French to an unnamed recipient by Jean Pendrell Waddington as "Waddy" on front blank, dated 15 March 1931. Waddington was a member of La Croisière Jaune, a Citroën automotive expedition travelling from Beirut to Beijing in 1931-2. The inscription reads: "This is the story of the second expedition, we are off for the third... and I hope that when like Ulysses we have made a beautiful journey you can leave for a fourth expedition and that this one will pass through your homeland". The intrepid duo of Georges-Marie Haardt (1884-1932) and Louis Audouin-Dubreuil (1887-1960) were pioneers of motor exploration, and this attractive work documents their automotive north-to-south crossing of Africa in 1924-5 to promote the Citroën brand. The crossing of Africa was followed by a similarly impressive feat, La Croisière Jaune. Aside from the advertising aspect, the expedition was also significant… Read More

Description:
London: Royal Asiatic Society,, 1924. A scarce monograph by the ornithologist Masauji Hachisuka, nephew of the last Tokugawa shogun, addressing a key issue in Chinese mythography: the identity of the legendary fenghuang bird first referenced in ancient Chinese manuscripts. According to the Bamboo Annals (Zhushu jinian), the fenghuang first appeared in China in 2647 BCE, contemporaneous to references to the benu in the Pyramid Texts of ancient Egypt. In successive dynasties, the fenghuang became a key motive of Chinese culture, being referenced in received texts such as the Analects, on bronze vessels and stone stelae, in paintings, and on clothing. In this work, Masauji Hachisuka (1903-1953) dismisses attempts, begun with the translations of James Legge (1815-1897), to equate the fenghuang with the phoenix of Western mythology. He argues instead that the bird actually existed in nature as the ocellated pheasant (Reinardius ocellatus), a reclusive species still found in parts of Asia in the early 20th… Read More

Description:
Paris: Librairie militaire J. Dumaine,, 1863. When we have carried out the offensive, we must support it to the last extremity" - Douglas Haig's marked up copy of Napoleon's Maximes Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig's copy, inscribed by him on the half-title, "Douglas Haig. 7th Queens Own Hussars, from General Keith Fraser, Insp[ecto]r General of Cavalry". A superb provenance: "Haig took the first important steps in his career through his association with Keith Fraser as his aide de camp for the 1894 manoeuvres" (Badsey, p. 71). Books owned by Haig rarely appear on the open market. This was most likely presented to Haig between the autumn of 1894 and early 1895, when Fraser moved on from the post of Inspector General, and while Haig was still serving with the 7th Hussars, before joining the Staff College at Camberley in 1896 and relinquishing regimental duties. Haig had failed at his first attempt to get into the Staff College due to a combination of colour blindness and a poor performance in the newly… Read More
