Known as a journalist and cultural critic, Hackett was at work on his long-awaited biography of Henry VIII, which publisher Horace Liveright was counting on as a much-needed money-maker for his struggling firm. After long delays, Hackett submitted the manuscript for this novel instead. Liveright was unhappy and did not think much of the book. Haeckel writes an unnamed colleague having just returned from two months in Sicily to acknowledge a letter he found waiting. Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a renowned naturalist and professor of comparative anatomy who was responsible for identifying many species and who strove to bring Darwin's theories to a popular audience. At the end of his life, he is credited as being the first to coin the term "First World War.

San Francisco: San Francisco Bay Area District Council No. 2, Maritime Federation of the Pacific Coast, 1937. First edition. Spine heavily worn so that wrappers no longer hold together; few extraneous nicks; fragile. 4to, unpag., pictorial wrappers. Hagel's first book, a documentation of the great San Francisco maritime strike that defined the labor movement in the west in the early years of FDR's administration. Hagel, along with his wife Hansel Mieth, would become well-known as a documentary photographer of social protest. This early publication is delicate and rather uncommon.

The author's first book, a satirical look at the relation between the sexes. Hahn went on to a prolific career producing dozens of books and hundreds of short stories. Printed program for Friday, July 13, 1934, featuring two 1931 comedies: "La Prison en Folie" and "Mam'zelle Nitouche." Haik was a producer and owner of several theaters, with a particular claim to fame among French film devotees for having been the first to present the work of Charlie Chaplin in that country -- he also is credited with inventing the nickname "Charlot" by which Chaplin was widely known in France. A Jew, Haik suffered under Nazi occupation when his theaters and businesses were seized. He produced an anti-Nazi film before fleeing to Tunisia, where he had been born.

Rehearsal script from Hanley's Broadway debut at the Plymouth Theatre, produced by Hume Cronyn and directed by Joseph Anthony. The play, which dealt with issues of race, guilt, and abortion, was critically acclaimed but proved a commercial failure. Though it has been revived a number of times, Hanley found his greater success in writing for television.

Eduard Hanslick (1825-1904) was a prominent and influential music critic, savaged by Wagner (whose music he had once praised, then turned against) in "Das Judentum in der Musik." It is thought that the character of the critic Beckmesser in Wagner's "Meistersinger von Nürnberg" was based on Hanslick.

Anonymously authored by Hapgood, one of the founders of the Provincetown Players and a fixture in the Greenwich Village Bohemian scene, this book turned into one of Liveright's first notable legal battles with censors who deemed it obscene. It was not, however, until the book had reached its third printing that authorities took notice. This first printing is quite uncommon, especially in any amount of the dust jacket.
