Miraflores, Peru: Fundación Felipe Antonio Custer, 2013. First edition, second reprint. Hardcover. Color illustrated boards. Fine, in near fine dust wrapper. 266 pages. 30.5 x 24.5 cm. This large, beautifully illustrated cookbook demonstrates the fluid cuisine of Peru. The Quechua and other highlanders of Inca times happily included seafood and shellfish in their diet before Spanish colonization. During the Spanish era, the food fused with Moorish elements as well as Spanish African Slave methods. In the 19th century the first Chinese immigrants arrived in Peru. Their influence on Peruvian cooking has been nothing less than fundamental. In the last year of the 19th century the Japanese immigration to Peru got under way. All of these influences bring together a bounty of ingredients and methods that make Peruvian cuisine unlike any other. Illustrated throughout with color photography. Description:
York, England, 1886. Loose_leaf. Folded folio. Very good. 32 x 20 cm. This menu, written by Halliwell, a local master of ceremonies and freemason, was made to accommodate and service the 3rd and 4th battalions' officers of the West Riding Regiment, formerly known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The officers were lodged in the De Grey Rooms, neo-classically designed and constructed by architect George Townsend Andrews in the 1840's. The building was originally built to house the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment. The menu describes breakfast, luncheon, and dinner, with served dishes that include tea, coffee, bacon and eggs, kidneys, cakes, salad, soups, sweets, ices, and more. Menu also informs the officers of prices to pay per diem for services, and the charges the guests and live-in servants must pay for board and food. The second page lists the sums for individual drinks. Delightful acquisition for a connoisseur of English military history. Light fold marks with some toning.
