Original cloth-backed boards. Original unclipped dust-jacket in protective cover. Spine of dust-jacket a little faded and a couple of small tears. Biro marks in the margins on a few leaves; a very good copy.

London: H.F. & G. Witherby [1953], 1953. First edition. Two volumes. Signed by the author to the half title of volume II. Demy 4to. (285x220mm). pp.xvi, 510; vii, 314, [2]. Volume I in navy buckram, volume II in navy cloth lettered in gilt to the spine. Cream dust jacket lettered and decorated in black and red, price clipped. Plastic protective wrapper. Binding and jackets are in very good condition with only the slightest shelfwear. Internally both volumes are in excellent condition. There is the colour frontispiece to volume I but not volume II, indicating that the second volume is not the first issue, although the first volume is. However, all the plates, colour and black and white are present together with the maps, making this a lovely pair. Harrison's Birds of Kent is frequently cited as one of the finest of the county bird studies and the author's own illustrations add a particular charm.

London: Haskins Press 1975, 1975. Limited edition. 350x270mm. Unpaginated [pp156]. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. A seminal book in the history of photography, fashion, design, soft-focus erotica and social history. Although Cowboy Kate is clearly a work of its time (mid 1960s) what lends it an eternal charm is the light touch humour that defines (for good or ill) the British attitude to nudity and sex.

Brown paper over boards with lettering in blind on upper board, black lettering on spine. Two small dents and thin wrinkle in paper on upper board (binding flaw). No dust-jacket as issued. Portfolio case in navy blue cloth over stiff boards (530x800mm) containing 6 plates (505x755mm) being prints of Hawksmoor's designs for All Soul's College, Oxford. Title printed on grey card with navy blue lettering and decorative border and pasted onto the upper cover of the portfolio. A blue ribbon ties the upper and lower boards together. One double folding engraved plate. Parallel text in Greek and Latin. Contemporary calf, spine with six raised bands. Six compartments decorated in gilt with French Royal arms of fleur-de-lys surrounded by a garland and surmounted by a crown. Brown morocco label to second compartment, lettered in gilt. Edges of boards decorated in gilt. All edges sprinkled red. In excellent condition with only very slight marking to the boards. Internally fine, beautifully crisp and fresh. Front pastedown has armorial bookplate of Thomas Hall and front free endpaper has ownership inscription "T.Hall C.C.C. Oxon. 1744". An immaculate copy of Luchtmans's handsomely printed Herodotus in the edition by the German scholar Johann Gronovius who was professor of Greek at Leiden where he was also the University Librarian.

Original grey-brown paper covered boards, rebacked, original paper label to spine (torn and missing left and right edges), lettered in black. Edges of boards slightly worn. Internally very good with some foxing in places, leaves uncut. Front free endpaper has ownership inscription of A.M. Perkins. Upper cover has a gift inscription (only partially legible) "To. Perkins Esqr, 7 Hereford [?] Street, Red Lion Square, London or [...] Regents Park. W.J [...ins] Compliments [.....] Dublin". Rare in commerce, the last copy appearing at auction in 1980. � William Higgins (1763-1825) was born in Ireland but moved to London in 1784 where his uncle Bryan Higgins was a doctor and chemist. Fontainebleau: L'imprimerie Gosswiller 1961, 1961. Limited edition, exemplaire numéro 11 of 100. Eight folded sheets of Rives paper (250x400mm), the engravings on separate sheets (250x200mm). One further folded sheet which is a prospectus for Heroics. All housed in a folder with the title on the upper cover. The folder is a little soiled and there is slight foxing elsewhere but overall this is a very good copy of a scarce work. In addition, there are twelve loose typescript sheets (270x210mm) with poems by Hine. Two of them "Don Juan in Amsterdam" and "Patroclus putting on the armour of Achilles" are in Heroics, the latter in altered form so it seems probable that these typescripts were Hine's. The other poems are by Hine and some contain modest manuscript amendments. The engravings by Virgil Burnett compliment Hine's clear, structured and classical verse. Book and slipcase are in excellent, fine condition. The print (500x395mm) is housed in a black board portfolio case lettered in white with a black ribbon tie. Some slight marking to the case but the print is pristine. Recordings is one of two artists' monographs published by Nanna Hänninen (the other being "Fear and Security"). London: Offices of "The Studio" 1902, 1902. Eight parts in original grey wrappers 430x308mm lettered in white. With introductory essay by Frederick Wedmore, a commentary on the painters illustrated and a list of water-colour painters. Sixty six water-colour reproductions tipped in on large white heavy paper (measures 418x295 and the prints vary but are around 240x160mm) and each one protected by tissue paper on which is printed the details of the artist and the painting. All housed in a blue paper covered card folder with a label to upper cover. Some marking to folder and fading to grey wrappers but overall in very good condition and the prints are particularly fine.

London: The Studio 1893, 1893. A set of The Studio from the Volume 1, Number 1 issued in April 1893 to Volume 100 (ending in December 1930). All 1st eds, all 4to. Almost all, including the first six issues making up Volume One, are in the rare original paper wrappers. Seventeen volumes are in the green cloth. Of the complete set of one hundred volumes, five are missing (4, 76, 77, 83 and 85) and the set lacks a further eleven individual numbers in the monthly magazine format but this is a very good, near complete set in, for the most part, its original form. Many of the magazines have the text jointly in English and French. All are in very good condition but with some minor tears to some of those in paper wrapper. Each Part contains an introductory essay on a particular artistic medium. These are paginated consecutively through the series running to 64 (unopened)pages. The subjects covered are: 1. Wood Engraving; 2. Lithography; 3. Oil Painting; 4. Water Colour; 5. Etching and Dry Point; 6. Pastel; 7. Monotyping in Colour; 8. Pencil and Pen. A French translation is loosely inserted in each part. Every issue has six tipped-in plates. These include original etchings and lithographs. There are fine reproductions of water colours, pastels and oils the originals of which, in a number of cases, were created specially for this series. The contents are in excellent condition and the plates are superb. There is some slight tearing to the spines of some of the wrappers but with no loss. London: John Murray 1835, 1835. First edition. 2 volumes, 4to. Vol 1: [xx], 561, 89pp analytical index w/ 12 line figures. Vol 2: 97 single-leaf engraved plates, each with guard leaves. All edges gilt and textblocks tight with only minimal toning to edges. In contemporary publishers full dark-olive morocco with wide borders of scrolled and foliate gilt-line work to upper and lower boards of both volumes, gilt-ruled outer borders with decorative corners. Pastedowns have triple gilt-ruled dentelles with scrolled detail. Backstrips have 5 raised bands with foliate scrollwork panels in gilt, gilt titles and "London 1835" to the foot of each. The pastedowns have the small armorial bookplates of Charles Rugge-Price, 3rd Baronet Rugge-Price and both volumes retain their royal-blue silk place markers (vol 2's fragile at head end and vol 1's slightly frayed at foot with light fading to the ends of both). The full text is: "The Castle of Otranto. a Gothic Story. translated by William Marshal Gent. from the original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of St Nicholas at Otranto. ----velut egri somnia vane./ Fingentur species; tamen ut pes, &caput uni/ Reddatur forme ------Hor." Some staining and a little creased to the edges but overall in excellent condition. Walpole has combined the title pages of the first and second editions (both appeared in 1765). The first edition title page contains the reference to the fictitious William Marshal and Onuphrio Muralto while these are omitted from the second edition. However, it is in the second edition that Walpole first describes his story as "Gothic" and includes the (slightly misquoted) epigraph from Horace's Ars Poetica, in a shortened form from that written here. West Smethwick n.d. [c1912]. 204x90mm. 8pp text and two colour photographs of examples of Ruskin pottery. Loosely inserted are six black and white photographs, each with three pieces of pottery. The numbers underneath each piece indicate that these are photographs to be used in sale catalogues. The pamphlet is in the original grey-green card wrappers. Two blue ink stains to upper cover of pamphlet and one of the separate photographs has a scuff to the bottom edge but otherwise in very good condition. It is rare: we have been unable to trace a Ruskin pamphlet answering to this description in the library databases and only one copy appears in the auction records. The pamphlet begins with the statement on the title page that the Flambe pieces made by the Ruskin Pottery "have the qualities of some of the finest specimens of Chinese Pottery. Brown cloth decorated with two bands of leaf and flower motifs with gilt borders to upper cover and spine with the design continued in blind on the lower cover. Spine lettered in gilt. Corners bumped and a small crease to spine of volume one and a small tear to head of spine of volume two. Foxing to title pages and a tear with loss to foot of C8 of volume two (not affecting the text) but overall very good copies. The half title in both books is inscribed "J.N.Brocklehurst from the author with all good wishes. April 1883". A nice set of the two Tom Brown novels with gift inscriptions from Hughes. Tom Brown's Schooldays was intended by Hughes to be an exercise in "preaching" rather than an amusing entertainment.
