London,: Day & Haghe, Lithrs. to the King, [1832].. Image: 400 by 600mm (15.75 by 23.5 inches). Sheet: 545 by 720mm (21.5 by 28.25 inches).. Lithograph with original hand colour. The livery hall of the Fishmongers' Company was demolished in 1827 to make way for the construction of the new London Bridge. This print was presumably produced to celebrate the impending completion of the construction of the new hall. A competition was announced to find the architect, and 87 entrants applied. The eventual winner was Henry Roberts (1803-76), a British architect who had only set up his own practice two years before. The Fishmongers' Hall, which stands to this day (albeit damaged during the Second World War), is his best known work. William Day (1797-1845) and Louis Haghe (1806-85) formed a partnership which became one of the largest British lithographic firms of the nineteenth century, and was successful enough to gain a royal warrant in 1838. After William's death in 1845 the company was run by his son W.J.… Read More

German printmaker Johann Jakob Haid produced a portrait of Sebastian Münster to serve as Plate 33 in Anton Brucker's 'Ehren-tempel der Deutschen Gelehrsamkeit' (1747), a series of portrait of fifteenth century German scholars. The portrait shows the cartographer wearing a doublet and beret, and holding in his left hand a small book. The image is set in an oval, beneath which the subject's name, position and dates of birth and death are given. [London],: H. Colburn, 13 Grt. Marlborough Street,, 1845. 388 by 412mm (15.25 by 16.25 inches).. Lithograph map with original hand-colour in outline, with one inset map, manuscript pencil inscription to margin. A rare map showing the Canton region, including Hong Kong Island, Lantau and Macao. In 1839, William Hutcheon Hall obtained command of an East Indiaman called the Nemesis, on board which he served in the First Anglo-Chinese War. The ship's first engagement was in the Second Battle of Chuenpi in early 1841, which resulted in a resounding British victory. Along with his other naval achievements, this triumph won the captain the nickname of 'Nemesis Hall' and he was promoted to the rank of Captain at the end of the war in 1842, when Hong Kong was ceded to Britain. Hall kept copious notes about his experiences in China, which were later used by Oxford graduate William Dallas Bernard to write an account of the war, entitled 'Narrative of the Voyages and Services of the Nemesis from 1840 to 1843'… Read More

London, : Stanford's Geographical Establishment,, 1902.. 750 by 655mm. (29.5 by 25.75 inches).. Lithograph map. A lithographed map of the borough of Southwark, covering an area extending from Temple to the Tower of London to Kennington. The borough is enclosed within a red line; other red marks added by a later hand pick out schools. The map shows the 1825 London Bridge designed by John Rennie, with the church of St Magnus the Martyr on the north side. The Oval, marked as the Surrey Cricket Ground, had only been built half a century before and had hosted the first international test cricket match in England in 1880. The famous asylum, the Bethlem Royal Hospital, is shown in its third site, where it moved in 1815 in order to give the patients more room for outdoor activities. The building is now the Imperial War Museum. Unrecorded in COPAC and WorldCat.

London,: Henry Jones,, [c1702].. 143 by 257mm. (5.75 by 10 inches).. Engraved map. Little is known of the surveyor, Frederick de Hauttecourt; his will, dated 16th March, 1704 describes him as "Frederick de Hauttecourt, Gentleman of Saint Margaret Westminster"; he is referred in the text as surveying Cornwall with Thomas Tuttell, the King's Hydrographer, a globe-maker and instrument-maker. The surveys in Cornwall form all his recorded survey work. The sheet contains a chart of Whitesand Bay set above an extensive letterpress text; the chart shows the Bay, on the tip of Cornwall, from 'H' ('Cape Cornwall'), and the coast just to the north, south to 'G' (S.t Levant'), with the 'K' ('the Long ships') to the coast, surveyed at an approximate scale of one inch to one statute mile. The land was owned by Henry Jones, the presumed publisher, but was later acquired by Edward Boscawen, a vice-admiral in the Navy. The text notes: "... The Charges of building the said Mould, will be very small and easie to the… Read More

The Adelphi of the title are the Adelphi Buildings, a block of terraced houses designed by the Adams brothers. They named the buildings in an act of self-promotion (from adelphoi, meaning brothers) and through royal favour were allowed to develop the shore from the Strand to the river by Act of Parliament in 1771, fuelling derisive commentary from a contemporary satirist: "The Princess, fond of raw-boned faces, May give you all our posts and places; Take all to gratify your pride But dip your oatmeal in the Clyde" (Graham). The Great Exhibition and the Cavendish banana Colour tinted lithograph. The Great Exhibition was most probably a reaction to the French Industrial Exposition in 1844: Prince Albert led the demand for a similar show of British industrial and imperial strength. Although other countries also exhibited, it was mainly designed to show off British achievements: colonial goods like Indian jewellery and cotton; technological advancements like an early fax machine and Jacquard looms; and art including Wedgwood porcelain and statues by Hiram Power. The Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton and built in record time, taking only nine months to complete, using British glass and iron. The Army and Navy Club was founded by Lieutenant-General Edward Barnes, a member of the Duke of Wellington's staff and governor of Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). Originally intended for army members only, when Barnes asked Wellington to be a patron the Duke insisted on extending membership to the navy as well. After several temporary locations, the club bought several houses in Pall Mall and St James's Square, for a larger, permanent base. After one abortive design which was deemed to be too small (an extra house was hastily bought) the club was built to a plan by C.O. Parnell and Alfred Smith, drawing on the Palazzo Corner della ca' Grande in Venice. Building began in 1848 and the club opened in 1851. Sheet: 580 by 740mm (22.75 by 29.25 inches).. Engraved print. The Gordon Riots broke out across London in June 1780 in protest at the Papists Act, passed two years before. The Papists Act had lifted a number of the Penal Laws in Britain, which discriminated against Roman Catholics. The Protestant Association in London, led by Lord George Gordon, marched on Parliament along with other protesters to present a petition against the Act. The disturbance spread, resulting in the destruction of Newgate Prison and the Clink, and the escape of the prisoners. After several days, troops were sent against the rioters. The print was made after a painting by Francis Wheatley, commissioned by the publisher John Boydell. It shows a specific incident during the Riots, when the house of a rich Catholic Irishman, Mr Donovan, was attacked and looted. Troops arrived… Read More

London,: Published by Charles Wilson (late J.W. Norie & Wilson) No.157 Leadenhall Street,, 1877.. 820 by 1610mm (32.25 by 63.5 inches).. Engraved chart, on five sheets joined and backed on linen, edged in linen, a few water stains to far right. Rare chart of the world published for use aboard merchant and passenger shipping, in order to mark a ships track. With ships constantly sailing back and forth between Britain and Asia, it was essential to ensure smooth and efficient passages. To this end in the 1790s William Heather, hydrographer to the East India Company, began publishing blank charts for use by East India Company shipping, which they could use as a template to plot their tracks through the sea. The charts would continue to be published by Heather, and his successor's Norie and Wilson, through much of the nineteenth century. The present example identifies ports and harbours at which the ships might wish to stop off, as well as various shoals, reefs, and ice that could prove to be dangerous… Read More

This edition, dated 1779, appeared only in the 1780 and 1787 Gregory editions of Herbert's important sea atlas, 'A New Directory of the East Indies', which were issued in very limited print runs. The present Gregory edition is virtually identical to the Herbert issue, save for the change in title, the replacement of the cartouche, and the addition of two cartographic insets.

Herbert's trade card from his London Bridge address Engraved trade card. After seven years with the East India Company in the subcontinent, and a few false starts on his return (as hosier, dyer, and glass painter), William Herbert (1718-1795) finally settled on being a seller and publisher of prints, maps, and charts in one of the new houses on London Bridge in 1749. He launched his business with the publication of some drawings that he had acquired during his time abroad. As London Bridge was notorious for burning (and falling) down, Herbert had the bright idea of a floating fire-engine, which suggestion was taken up by the Royal Exchange Assurance company. Nonetheless, the bridge burnt in 1758, and Herbert was forced to move to Leadenall Street, where he published the opportunistic, 'A chronological and historical account from the… Read More
