United States of America: International Cocktail, Wine and Spirits Digest, Inc, 1948. As 'Maitre de Bar' at New York's Hotel Pierre in the 1940s, Oscar Haimo poured drinks for the best known celebrities of his time. Oscar Haimo self-published his 'Cocktail and Wine Digest'- in the drinks trade, it was known as the 'barman's bible'. Haimo wrote from his private notes and included his own poems & drawings, and interesting blue-tinted photographic plates of people and places in NYC. About himself, Haimo said "the greatest thing in this mixologist's life is the 'cocktail par excellence'"-- perhaps referring to his prize-winning 'MacArthur' cocktail (lime juice, Triple Sec, Rum & Jamaican Rum, a dash of egg white, shaken well). Bold and striking Danish language early reader abecedarium, an animal illustrating each letter of the alphabet, with K for Kangaroo. Decorated by noted Danish woodblock artist Ernst Hansen with verses by Hans Hartvig Seedorff Pedersen. Quarto, 32pp, string tied in original colour illustrated wrappers; externally a little browned and worn at the extremities, otherwise fine.

London: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. Hartley. Signed limited edition, printed on Japanese vellum; this is number 29 of 1350 copies. This copy bears a presentation inscription in English and Hebrew to Dr. Robert Wallace, Vice-Chancellor of the University, from Rabbi Falk, September 1936. Rabbi Falk's immense literary collection is now housed in the Rabbi L. A. Falk Memorial Library at the Great Synagogue in Sydney. Small quarto, colour frontispiece, illustrated throughout, a fine copy in the original polished calf, blind decorated in relief.

This is the first edition, on plain paper, with only the phonetically transliterated Japanese title on the front wrapper and the English title only at the beginning of the story. The colophon states (in English) that it is No.5 of the 'Japanese Fairy Tales Series'. The series was also printed on crepe paper, in which format they are much better known, but the genuine first edition is generally considered to be the plain paper issue. 14 folded leaves (28pp.) including cover wrappers, colour woodcut illustrations, stab-bound with two blue silk knots, 183 x 127mm. A near-fine copy.

The book is profusely illustrated with evocative line drawings and photographs of the outback. Small quarto, line drawings and photographic illustrations throughout, fine in original pictorial cloth-backed boards.

Tokyo: Kokkeido, 1920. First Edition. A rare work by a celebrated female Japanese artist, Mizuno Hidekata (1875- 1944). Hidekata was one of the first popular professional female ukiyo-e artists, specialising in genre scenes and the reappraisal of Bijin (pictures of beautiful women), also working on illustrations for Sh jo Sekai, Jogaku Sekai, among other magazines. Hidekata studied under Mizuno Toshikata, whom she later married. Despite being a forerunner for professional twentieth century female artists in Japan, it is hard to find her works today. The woodcuts in this attractive album are beautiful, balanced, executed in lovely colours, several highlighted with silver.
