Toned. Corners rubbed and frayed. Some spotting on cover. Binding shaken. Samuel Byram Halliday (1812-1897) was a social reformer in New York City. He wrote this book about his work as a missionary with the American Female Guardian Society and Home for the Friendless, discussing poverty and crime in the city. He went on to work as Henry Ward Beecher's assistant at Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn Heights. The book was later published as The little street sweeper; or, Life among the poor. Cambridge: Press of John Wilson and Son, 1866. 8vo.  195 x 130 mm.  [7 ¾ x 5 inches].  185 pp.  Original publisher's cloth; head and tail of spine with s few minor tears, cloth joint expertly repaired; some minor water staining to the margins of the text.  This copy has an inscription that appears to be by his daughter Margaret White. Privately printed memoir by one of America's most prominent portrait painters working before the Civil War.  He was elected as an Honorary Member of the National Academy in 1828 after having painted portraits of many notable Americans in the literary, political and social realms.   According to Mantle Fielding, Harding was entirely self-taught and during a visit to England create portraits for members of the Royal Family.  His daughter Margaret E. Each image is mounted to a cardboard mat, 11 of which have lithographic vignettes in the lower corner of the mat. Deluxe Edition, numbered "79". Sold by Subscription Only.
Each image is preceded by a tissue with the title of plate printed; some of the tissues are creased and chipped at the out edges. Each plate is signed by Harlow in pencil and a few are signed in the plate; the images are clean and bright, but the mats show some toning, and a few have minor chips to the edges. The folio plates are housed in a folding portfolio, the spine and flaps are worn and probably should be discarded.
Scarce portfolio of Civil War paintings by the noted Boston artist Louis Kinney Harlow. Harlow was noted for his water color illustrations that were used to illustrate scores of books and which keep the printer Louis Prang very busy in the 1880's and 1890's.… Read More

First edition.  Interesting historical novel which integrates vast information on the system of aqueducts which were vital to the life of Naples and the nine towns surrounding Pompeii with the an description of the lives of ordinary citizens and tourists visiting Pompeii before the eruption.  It also include a narrative with such stars as Pliny the Elder and the Younger and a cast of hundreds.

Printed in an edition limited to 240 copies, this copy numbered 233.  Part I of a project three-part series on the published writings and manuscripts of Poe.  This part is devoted to the bibliography and census of his printed works.  Part II was devoted to his magazine writing and editorial work and Part III to the location of Poe's manuscripts and letters. Each of the entries in Part I contains a full title-page transcription, mention of the ornamental elements to the typography of the work, a collation of the text inclusive of blanks, and notes on the publishing history of the text including reviews and recent auction information.  (836).

Together two folio, full-length lithographic silhouette images of a pair of prominent Americans, the first set against an architectural background, and the second posed in an interior parlor room space.  The lithographs measure 335 x 245 mm., [13 x 9 ½ inches], and the silhouettes themselves measuring about 245 x 70 mm., [9 ½ x 2 ¾ inches].  Well-designed silhouettes illustrating the profiles of William White, the noted Philadelphia minister and sometime president of the Philadelphia Bible Society, and Felix Grundy, the longtime senator from Tennessee and supporter of Jacksonian democracy.  William Henry Brown career as a profilist began as early as the 1820's and continued until just before the Civil War. Very copy of this rare government document outlining the changes that will be made as to the timing of interest payment to the School Funds because of the banking crisis which to place after the War of 1812.  Reading, in part: "Sir, The derangement which has taken place respecting Bank paper, and the difficulty of obtaining Bills of the Banks of this State to pay the interest on School Fund bonds, has induced me to extend the privilege of making payment of the interest due prior to this date to the first day of June next, charging interest thereon from this day, as an indemnity for the discount I may be necessitated to pay at the Banks for money to meet the dividends to the Schools...."  Hillhouse goes on to warn that failure to pay interest in full by June 1st will result in the loan of [$475.13… Read More

Part I is a history of the library at the University of Genoa with descriptions of its various collections, especially as associated with travel and voyages and the New World.  Part II is a history of the Archivio di Genova, with seven articles on its origins and development over eight centuries.  This is followed by a catalogue of an exhibition, featuring 74 items,  describing the hightlights from the collection.
