(Napa: Tales for Travellers, 1985). First edition thus: Number 19 in the short-lived "Selected Short Stories by Great Writers" series devised by James H. Schmidt in 1982 with the intent of providing quality reading material for daily commuters that was inexpensive enough to share. Originally issued in 4 slipcased volumes each of which housed 12 map-folded pamphlets. Most of the individual pamphlets included a single short story though a few had an additional story and/or poem. In this case, there are 3 stories. Each of the 48 pamphlets in the series is 24 pages (including illustrated covers) printed on both sides of a single sheet folded up like a map. Fine. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1887. First American edition of Haggard's first novel. There were four U.S. printings of this book in 1887: by Appleton, Harper, Lovell and Munro. Priority unknown. The Appleton edition was also published in two volumes in wraps. This may be a rebound copy although it also may be a publisher's one-volume edition. It has only one title page. There are 8 pages of ads in back. Red cloth spine lettered and ruled in gold; black marbled paper boards. Boards lightly scratched and worn at edges, spine has few tiny tears to ends, otherwise about very good.

First edition. 18.75 x 24.75" broadside poster advertising the availability of the trade edition issued from the Arion Press limited edition (published the previous year). Both editions were illustrated with period photographs of sites in the novel. The poster prominently features a film-noirish black-and-white photo of San Francisco's Stockton Street Tunnel -- outside of which is where Sam Spade first sees his murdered partner, Miles Archer. There's also a quote painting the scene from the book printed beneath the photo. Near fine with touch of faint soiling and few tiny edge creases. Scarce.
