Together with his younger brother, Charles Edwin, Henry Ernest Gatliff went to South Africa to join the British Forces to fight in the Boer War (1899-1902). He fought with the Canadian Scouts and was slightly wounded. This postcard was sent from Fresno California after the war on his way back to Australia. Creasing and wear at edges of card.. Good. Herbert Evelyn Caulfield Gatliff fought with the Coldstream Guards in the great War, although his pacifist views meant that he served just 6 months. Gatliff had a long career in the Civil Service working in a senior role at Treasury. He was also known for his love of nature and walking and was instrumental in setting up Youth Hostel in the Hebrides. The Gatliff Trust continues to this day. In this letter he writes of the passing of his father, his relocation to Devonshire, for the sake of his daughter Jane's health and schooling, his lack of knowledge of the 'Australian branch of the Family,' although he does see Guy Innes' name (well known Fleet Street Journalist) from time to time.
