Description:
Brighton & London, 1856. Hall, Marshall (1790-1857). Four A.L.s. to George Harley (1829-96). The first letter dated March 13, 1856, from 11 Princes Street, Hanover Square, London; the remaining letters dated December 24, 26 and 27 from 37 King's Road, Brighton. 8vo. 12pp. total. 191 x 117 mm. Creased where previously folded, light soiling along folds, otherwise very good. A series of letters on medical and scientific subjects from the British neurologist Marshall Hall, author of seminal works on reflex action and epilepsy (Garrison-Morton 1359 & 4812), to Dr. George Harley, who published the classic description of paroxysmal hemoglobinuria ("Harley's disease"; G-M 4171) in 1865. The letters refer to Harley's physiological experiment on a cat and what appears to be a course of investigations on the nerves using the poison woorali (a source of one of the constituents of curare); Hall agreed to supply Harley with woorali, and posed many questions and suggestions as to how Harley might proceed. Haller, Albrecht (1708-77). Campanula. Ink and watercolor drawing with autograph manuscript caption. N.p., n.d. 312 x 202 mm. Small pin-holes in left margin and lower right corner, a few tiny marginal tears, remains of mounting tabs on verso. Inscription in French on the verso in an unidentified hand identifying the drawing as by Haller. An original botanical drawing by the great Swiss scientist Haller, who made fundamental contributions to botany as well as to anatomy and physiology. In an effort to create "a complete, encyclopedic science of Swiss flora" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography), Haller published a major treatise on the subject, Historia stirpium indigenarum Helvetiae inchoate (1768), and amassed an herbarium of Swiss plants that is still used today. He corresponded with Linnaeus on the problem of nomenclature, seeking an alternative to Linnaus's binary nomenclature and sexual system of classification. Haller's drawing is of a species of campanula (bellflower). His caption, written in…

First Edition in French, translated by Samuel Tissot (1728-97) from two papers on the circulation and on bloodletting published in the Commentaries of the Royal Society of Göttingen in 1754 and 1756. Haller's physiological investigations of the heart and the circulation rank among his most important work. Original printed wrappers, tiny marginal tears in lower margin of front wrapper. Fine. First Edition, Offprint Issue. "Of his numerous publications on vascular surgery, Halsted's most scholarly and interesting is that entitled ‘Ligations of the Left Subclavian Artery in its First Portion,' published in 1921, one year before his death. It contains a good historical survey . . . Halsted concluded his informative paper by listing twenty-one aneurysms in which ligation of the first portion of the left subclavian was done. The twenty-first case was his own and perhaps, said Halsted, the largest subclavian aneurysm ever operated upon" (Wangensteen & Wangensteen, The Rise of Surgery, p. 263.). Included in the plates is a series of eight illustrations of the pre- and postoperative appearance of Halsted's patient;…
