Description:
12mo. original leather 249 pp. Binding is worn, and front joint is cracked. Minor foxing, but internally quite clean. Book label on front paste down. Gilbert Imlay (1754-1828) was a captain in the American army during the Revolution, and was probably born in Mammoth County New Jersey. Shortly after the war he bought a tract of land in Kentucky, and after arriving there became a deputy surveyor and speculated in additional land in that area. The DNB suggests he got in some financial and legal difficulties when he was there and actually left the country. While in Europe he became something of a celebrity in certain circles, and in addition to this work, he actually wrote a novel, The Emigrants. He also managed to have an affair with Mary Wollstonecraft, who he had a daughter with (Fanny), and while he claimed she was his best friend, it is believed that his behavior toward her resulted in two suicide attempts by Mary. According to Field much of the value of this work rests in the fact that it… Read More

Description:
Small broadside 8x5” with ornamental boarder. Very minor edge wear, else close to fine. It is not clear from the text of the song if this was published before or after Custer’s battle at the Little Big Horn, but it appears to be around that time. The song is a humorous warning to stay away from Cheyenne and the Black Hills. The lyrics warn that if you go there Sitting Bull and Commanche Bill “will raise up your hair”. The song writer adds that he wishes the person who started the gold rush craze in the Black Hills would be taken care of by Crazy Horse.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, original printed wrappers, [77] pp. Spine portion of wrapper mostly gone, and a few other minor chips and tears at edges. Library stamp on front wrapper. Normal aging. Overall very good. The Red Cloud Indian Agency was established in 1871 for Chief Red Cloud and his original Ogalala band of Lakota near Fort Laramie in Wyoming. By 1874, relations between the tribes and the Agency were souring, and some of the Indians joined hostile forces and a few even copped down the Agency’s flagpole. During these difficult times between the Agency and the Indians, Othniel March, the famous professor of Paleontology at Yale arrived on the scene, and developed a relationship with Chief Red Cloud. He was shocked and horrified to learn of the poor quality and limited amount of supplies being provided by the Agency. When he returned east, Marsh made quite a fuss about how the Indians were being cheated, which was carried in a series of articles in the newspapers, public reaction was strong and as a… Read More

This is a fire insurance policy of John Wallis for a two story building on the North side of Broadway, just off Mullberry Street, in Paterson, New Jersey. The premium was $15 for $1,200 in coverage. It appears that the proceeds from the policy were to be paid to a Cornelius Duryea. Description:
4to original cloth with gilt cover vignette, rebacked with modern cloth, leather spine label, illustrated. Some staining and wear to covers, and occasional staining and soiling within. There are some stub tears to the maps, and a few of the folding plates are ill creased. Overall in very good shape and the Indian plates are quite bright. The Ives expedition was the first real study of the Colorado, which had as its main purpose to see to what extent the river was navigable. To accomplish this task, a steamer was made in Philadelphia and shipped in parts to San Francisco, where it was back hauled to Ives in pieces in Colorado. The Streeter catalogue indicates that the “Ives expedition went up the Colorado some 500 miles to the limit of navigation, then continued overland along the river. The expedition disbanded at Albuquerque after transversing some 900 miles. His account of the Tonto Apaches who lived in the canyon walls is of particular interest.” All in all, this is an exceptional survey with… Read More
