Description:
London: J M Dent & Co, 1907 A good to very good copy of this classic work with 24 colour plates, 12 tinted plates and numerous illustrations by Arthur Rackham. 1st edition thus. Rackham first illustrated Ingoldsby Legends in 1898 using a smaller format and without tipped in colour plates. He revisited the work in 1907 adding plates and redrawing some of the other illustrations. The subject matter, including as it does witches, spectres, knights and monks (and a finally repentant Jackdaw), is well suited to Rackham's style. The decorative binding is in clean and tight condition with slight pulling to the spine and a very small bump to the bottom corner of the back board. There is some light ink marking, more prevalent on the back board but with a few spots to the front. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. Internally the dark green decorative endpapers are present without mark. There is an inscription to the half title. Contents are complete, clean and in very good condition. There is a small…

Description:
London and New York: William Heinemann Ltd, Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1931 A good copy in the original cloth binding with 50 tipped-in illustrations and numerous line drawings by Arthur Rackham. This edition was first published in 1905, so this is a later reprint but still with plates tipped in. The binding is sound and tight but with some lighter spotting to the bottom of the front board and back board. There is a little wear to corners and both bottom corners are bumped. Page edges and endpapers are green - the endpapers have a little fading and there is a faint ink signature on the fep. The half title page also has an ownership signature. Contents with frontispiece, title page, introduction, listing of illustrations, text (62 pages including postscript) , and 49 further plates on thick green backing paper at the rear. The text pages have occasional light spotting. Plates are in very good clean condition - backing pages have some light fading to top edges.

Description:
London: Stephen Austen , 1734 A fair copy in contemporary full leather binding with marbling to page edges. With frontispiece portrait of Isaac Barrow and a folding plate. Classed as 'fair' because the binding has wear and the front board is detaching. Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was a mathematician, classical scholar and theologian. He is principally known for his work on tangents and Calculus. He was one of Isaac Newton's teachers. The binding has raised bands to spine and the remains of gilt tooling. There are gilt lines to the boards. The spine has wear and loss to top and bottom and there is wear to corners - but it would be an easy leather repair. Contents: frontispiece; title page; blank; contents listing and errata pp iii-vi; Prefatory Oration pp vii-xxxii; text in 3 sections with half titles pp 1 - 440; folding plate; index 12pp; Names used in the Work 4 pp; Finis. The contents are generally very bright - with clean white paper. There are 2 repaired page tears (without loss) to pp 3…

Description:
London : Ward, Lock and Tyler A poor copy of the 2nd edition of Mrs Beeton's Household Management, dated around 1869. This copy is classed as 'poor' because it lacks frontispiece, title page and all preliminaries - the book starts at Chapter 1. The paper quality is extremely poor, with text and plate pages brown-toned and having brittle and friable edges. The book was 'rescued' by Colin Kerr, an Orkney craftsman, specialising in furniture-making, wood sculpture and bookbinding. He undertook a number of commissions for the local council to rebind books in commemorative bindings as gifts. As an avid book collector, he bound some of his own - particularly those in a poor state. The full leather binding has raised bands to spine and a decorative title label. It is clean and sound. New endpapers and page marker have been added. The contents from Chapter 1 onwards appear complete with 1,139pp and 11 colour-printed plates. There is considerable edge-tearing and chipping with loss to…
