Leipzig: 1911, Berlin. S. Fischer for the Society of Bibliophiles. S. Fischer for the Society of Bibliophiles. Elephant folio bound in rich dark brown crushed morocco with gilt interlocking and bold gilt borders on both covers as well as additional stylized gilt designs on inner dentelles all in the style of Henry van de Velde, superb interpretive illustrated endpapers with #210 of 250 Numbered Copies. 24 exquisite etchings by Alois Kolb and four full-page magnificent etchings with tissue guards, each one signed in pencil at bottom right by Kolb. Top edges gilt. An expansive production of a scarce work on the private press of the Royal Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig, Georg Belwe letterpress, Richard Berthold images and initials. Alois Kolb (1875-1942) was a Viennese artist and book illustrator known for his painterly etchings. In an impressive and period binding showing the Viennese influence on design.

Size of Watercolor Drawing: 7 1/2 by 5 inches, executed by Selwyn Image, noted British Turn of the Century artist, illustrator and designer closely allied to the Arts & Crafts Movement. Very rare in original boards, only a few copies in boards have survived. The Large Paper Edition, completely uncut. With full access to the American consul's massive library of Spanish history in Madrid, Irving began working on the book, and later was invited to stay at the palace of the Duke of Gor, who gave him unfettered access to his library containing many medieval manuscripts which aided in the development of the tale. In a note to the 1850 revised edition, however, he confessed that the Jesuit priest was his own invention.
