Description:
London: Colnagi, 1800. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Robert Dodd. Backed to restore losses to margin and to repair large tear in the upper right portion of the print, and to repair tear in bottom margin. A wonderful, rustic English shooting scene. Julius Cæsar Ibbetson "was apprenticed to John Fletcher, a ship-painter at Hull. Ibbetson attracted public attention by his designs for ship decoration and by some scenery painted for the Hull Theatre, and his success encouraged him to seek his fortune in London in 1777. He was forced at first to work for Mr. Clarke, a picture dealer in Leicester Fields, but was able at the same time to acquire a thorough acquaintance with the works and methods of Dutch artists, besides learning all the tricks of the trade... In 1780 he married... In 1785 he exhibited at the Royal Academy A View of Northfleet, and continued to exhibit during succeeding years. Becoming acquainted with Captain William Baillie and others, he was introduced into good…

Description:
London: T. Simpson, 1791. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Robert Dodd. A dramatic image of a regency buck releasing his hounds after a hare Only the publisher is certain on this print. Siltzer records Simpson as having published a series of six plates after Ibbetson in 1790, but with the 'Coursing' plate in aquatint by Simpson himself. The remaining five are listed as being stipple engravings by Dodd. The present image is the correct size, and the engraving method is uniform with the other five by Dodd. All this suggests that this may be a proposed replacement for the earlier aquatint and should therefore be viewed as a companion piece to the other Dodd prints. London: William Tegg, 1876. 4to. (10 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches). 96 pp., 47 lithographic plates on 45 sheets. Publisher's red cloth, gilt decoration and title on front cover and spine, fore edge gilt. A delightful volume of lithographic plates by the Junior Etching Club, a prestigious organization instrumental in the revival of etching in late-Victorian England, with illustrations by James McNeil Whislter and others. First edition of the most comprehensive volume by the Junior Etching Club. The Etching Revival for artists developed with the founding of the Etching Club in 1841, limited to only 12 members, and the Junior Etching Club in 1857, the group founded to accomodate young artists who could not join the Etching Club of London. Both of these bodies produced and published a number of anthologies, such as this one, during the later part of the nineteenth century as artists worked to expand this mediums expressive potential. The plates reflect numerous advances in printing technique. The volume is…

Description:
1796. Small quarto. 8pp. Loose sheets. Contemporary manuscript notations. Moderately soiled and worn. Final page loose, torn in center of text with minor loss. Early imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text deals with the Governor's reserve powers; it is signed in type by Governor Magallon. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, the Dutch abandoned the colony in 1710. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession…

Description:
1791. Folio. 24pp. Stitched as issued. Top corner of first leaf torn away, affecting several lines of text. Lightly dampstained and worn throughout. Still very good. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. Issued at a critical moment at the beginning of the French Revolution, the lengthy text concerns the government and judiciary of the island, together with a proclamation by the King dated August 24, 1790. The text nominally recognizes the authority of the King, while taking measures to establish major autonomy of local government. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. Description:
1794. Small quarto. 28pp. Stitched as issued. Contemporary notation on first page, some contemporary underlining in text. Minor soiling. Very good. A remarkable early imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France, in the south Indian Ocean. The text contains a report of the French Revolutionary Committee of Public Safety regarding prisoners arrested on the island of Réunion being held as enemies of the Revolution. The document was printed in the capital, Port Louis, which was called Port de la Montagne from 1792 to 1795. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. 1790. Folio. [2], 9pp. Printed self-wrappers. Folded sheets, several leaves loose. Moderate wear and soiling, heavier to wrapper. Wrapper with some minor loss, not affecting text. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. An extract from the journals of the "Délibérations & Arretés de L'Assemblée-Générale de la Colonie de l'Isle de France," dated Sept. 25, 1790, this document records the steps made to establish what was largely self-government at the outset of the French Revolution. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. 1796. Small quarto. 4pp. Single folded sheet. Contemporary manuscript notations. Light soiling and wear. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text contains the deliberations and acts of the colonial assembly of the island, at a time when it was operating virtually independent from France. The acts all concern measures to be taken for the defense of the island, at a time when British invasion was feared. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, the Dutch abandoned the colony in 1710. [Pennsylvania, 1890. Silver gelatin photograph (15 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches). Mounted on board (19 7/8 x 23 7/8 inches). Slight silvering of part of the image, light edge wear. A fascinating image featuring eleven men standing in front of an oil rig, complete from engine house to the oil derrick, the latter extending beyond the frame of the picture. Most of the men are fairly well dressed, and perhaps picture the management of the rig or the oil company that owns the rig. Among the better-dressed subjects is a young boy perhaps in his early teenage years. Two of the men are dressed in overalls, and are likely the roughnecks for this particular rig. A rare large photograph capturing the early days of the oil business in America.

New York: G.W. & C.B. Colton, 1869. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Census table at lower right. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover, Colton ad on the front pastedown. Colton pocket map of Iowa. Iowa experienced explosive growth during the 1860s, largely as a result of the rapid development of the state's railroad system. At the beginning of the decade, Iowa's few railroads were entirely confined to the eastern one-third of the state. By the time Colton published this fine map in 1869, several lines had pushed to its western border, including the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad, which joined the transcontinental railroad at Council Bluffs. This map is similar to another one published by the Coltons in the same period, though smaller and without the "sectional" divisions. Rumsey 0180 (1855 issue); Phillips, A List of Maps of America, p. 337 (1862 issue).
