Description:
Derby: Printed by and for Henry Mozley, Brook-Street, no date [c. ?1819]. 24mo, 126 x 68 mms.,, pp. [5] 6 - 71 [72 Contents], including in pagination a woodcut frontispiece, woodcut vignette for each song, contemporary boards, with most of leather spine gone, front end-paper before frontispiece removed; a so-so copy, with the following inscription on front paste-down end-paper: "exchanged with one for Jenny Stork for Catherine &/ Frances Stock Birchanger/ 24 feby. 1819/ have this" in two different hands and "F. Stokes" in pencil on top margin of title-page. Watts (1674 - 1748) published his Divine Songs attempted in Easy Language for the use of Children in 1715, and it would be difficult to estimate how many times it was reprinted. The earliest copy of this title printed in Derby that I can find was printed by John Drewry in 1792. Mozley published an edition of this work when he was in Gainsborough in 1785. Mozley was certainly publishing from an address in Brook Street… Read More

Description:
London, Printed by Tho: Newcomb, for Tich: Marriot, sold by most Booksellers. M.DC.LXX 1670. 8vo, 161 x 101 mms., pp. 140, 19th century quarter calf, marbled boards; lacks portrait, title-page soiled, gutter and fore-margin crudely repaired, last page soiled and darkened almost beyond readability; a very poor copy. Walton's life of Hooker was first published in 1665. A. S. McGrade's entry in the Oxford DNB is definitely revisionist: "The few known remarks made by contemporaries on Hooker's personal characteristics and the many offered in Walton's Life (first published in 1665), must be assessed in the light of his writings and the course of his life. Allowances must also be made for bias in Walton's sources—family connections no doubt resented a suit brought against Sandys for Hooker's daughters, and hence entertained a low opinion of his wife and in-laws—and for Walton's readiness to model Hooker as the proleptic defender of an English church very… Read More

Description:
William Pickering, 1836. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. ix [x error], 321 [322 blank], contemporary half calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, black morocco label, marbled boards; upper corners of pp. 39 - 42 defective, leather missing from corner of rear board, lower joints cracked. The views that Taylor expresses here were admubrated in his Saturday Evening (1832), but this work is both more speculative and more ambitious. Taylor is firmly empirical in his outlook and in the conduct of his argument, believing it to be susceptible of scientific confirmation. This Pickering imprint is not listed in Geoffrey Keynes' William Pickering (1924).

Madrid En la Imprenta da Agustin Fernandez..., 1709. Small quarto, 200 x 140 mms., pp. [xii], 288, annotations dated 1800 on rear paste-down end-paper, contemporary vellum, rather creased and dried, and slightly soiled, but an inoffensive binding. This is a remarkably early example of lipogrammatic literature. A lipogram is "a kind of constrained writing or word game consisting of writing paragraphs or longer works in which a particular letter or group of letters is avoided. Extended Ancient Greek texts avoiding the letter sigma are the earliest examples of lipograms" (Wikipedia). As early as the 1820s, Robles's Varios Prodigios de Amor was regarded as not only a remarkable technical achievement, but also a specimen of writing which exemplified the lexical wealth of Castilian Spanish itself. As the bibliographer Vincent Salva said of Robles's book: "No work affords more ample proof of the inexhaustible richness of the castilian language than the present. To write five… Read More

Jean-Baptiste-Claude Delisle de Sales (1741 - 1816) published what seemed to be an interminable series of volumes bearing the title De la Philosophie de la Nature, with the first volume appearing in 1770. Few of his contemporaries seemed to… Read More

The present volumes was reviewed in The Monthly Review for 1825: "Of the execution of this edition, it is impossible to speak in too high terms of praise. It is beautifully printed on handsome paper...which may vie with the handsomest specimens of the art of book deccoration.... On the whole, we may safely style it a beautiful book, inside and outside both!" e
