Description:
[24], 491, [1] pp.Important Latin edition of an Arabic medical compendium (first printed, also in Latin, in 1479), with additions by Gerard de Cremona. It provides a collection of opinions voiced by Greek and Arabic physicians on pathology and therapeutics. "No Arabic printed edition exists so far" (Choulant). The ninth-century Christian physician, perhaps in or near Damascus, Yahya ibn Sarabiyun, son of a Bagarma physician, wrote his great medical work Al-Kunnas in Syriac, but it was soon translated into Arabic by scholars such as Musa Ibrahim al-Haditi and ibn Bahlul. Manuscripts survive in twelve and in seven books. "The seven-book edition was frequently printed in Latin translations as 'Breviarium' and 'Practica therapeuticae methodus' [or here Therapeutice methodi]. Albanus Torinus, the editor of the Basel 1543 edition, called [the author] Janus Damascenus, for which reason he has been confused with the well-known theologian of that name. He is also often mistaken for his younger namesake,… Read More

Description:
[8], 499, [33] pp.Rare first and only edition of a commentary on book I, fen (section) I of Avicenna's Canon, including the Latin version of the text by Andrea Alpago and Jacob Mantino. Like most of Oddi's work it was published posthumously by his son Marco degli Oddi."Although in the body of his work much of the time he treated Avicenna with nominal respect, this was apt to be achieved through a procedure of deducing Avicenna's 'real' opinion by consulting Galen. In addition, Oddo Oddi had a long-standing interest in the problem of securing a better Latin text of the Canon (he was on the academic committee that approved Alpago's work and he encouraged Graziolo many years later); he based his exposition on Alpago's text, which he claimed to be in general use, and rather frequently compared the latter's renderings with those of Gerard of Cremona and Jakob Mantino." (Siraisi). Before practicing Medicine in Venice, Oddo degli Oddi (1478-1558) taught classics (Greek and Latin) at the University of Padua.… Read More

Description:
60 ll.First edition of Jacob Mantino's translation into Latin of the fourth part of the first book of Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine (original title: al-Qanun fi at-Tibb), divided into 31 chapters. Mantino dedicated it to the Doge of the Venetian Republic, Andrea Gritti (1455-1538).Jacob Mantino (1490-1549) was a Jewish doctor, rabbi and philosopher. He was born in Spain, but he, his family and the Jewish community in Tortosa were forced to flee after refusing catholic baptism, as decreed by the catholic King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Spain. Mantino grew up in Italy and studied philosophy and medicine at the universities of Bologna and Padua. Most of his adult life was spent being a doctor to the pope and other prominent members of society like cardinals, bishops and ambassadors in Bologna, Verona, Venice and Rome. He was also involved in the (religious) controversy over Henry VIII's divorce from Catharine of Aragon. In 1549, just before his death, he moved to Damascus as ambassador of… Read More

Description:
126, [1], [1 blank] pp.Rare third edition in the original Latin, printed with the woodblocks of the first (1522) edition by the same publisher, of a classic account of palm reading, physiognomy (determining personality from facial features and the shape of the head) and several aspects of astrology, including horoscopes and the effect of the sun, moon and planets on health and on the temperaments associated with the four humours. The text is divided into six "libri", but the first is unnumbered on the title-page so that it numbers the others 1-5. The woodcuts (including the author's portrait and coat-of-arms) were executed for the first edition and some have been attributed to Hans Baldung Grien and Hans Wechtlin. They include six fantastic chariots carrying male and female figures representing the moon and the five planets pulled by a variety of birds, a basilisk or cockatrice, wolves and a pair of women, with zodiac signs on the wheels. Description:
X, 187, [1] pp.First edition of the British-Indian army’s official account of the 1919-20 Waziristan campaign, marked "Confidential" on the title-page. The operations followed unrest that arose in the aftermath of the Third Anglo-Afghan War; they were conducted in the mountainous region of Waziristan (now in Pakistan) by British and Indian forces against the fiercely independent Waziri and Mahsud tribesmen that inhabited it. Since the 1870s, the British government agencies were assiduous in compiling internally published histories of their military frontier operations, with the intention of providing a "valuable guide" to such British commanders and policymakers as "might have future dealings with these turbulent neighbours" (as the Punjab Government phrased it in 1866).The title-page reports the catalogue number and location of what may be the original report: “Catalogue no. C.W. 4 - Case no. 8987 N.S.”.Serial No. 1235 stamped on the title-page. Occasional light marginal staining. A few edge flaws… Read More

Description:
[16] pp; [6] plates.First and only edition of an ethnographic study of native Indian people by William Tayler (1808-1892), who was at that time Acting Salt Agent of the Central Division of Cuttack for the East India Company. He dedicated his work to "Lady William Bentinck" (born Lady Mary Acheson 1809-1850), who was the wife of the Governor-General of India. The illustrations were drawn by Tayler himself, who was an amateur artist and drew much of the Indian daily life that he encountered. He selected the present 6 drawings to be published and had them lithographed by J. Bouvier. The first 3 plates not only show the ways of Indian people, but even more so the luxurious life of the English in India. The first plate, The Young Civilian's Toilet shows a young man relaxing while being treated by several servants, who are named Anglo-Indians. The room is strewn with objects of leisure. The next 2 plates, The Young Ladies Toilet & The Breakfast show equal scenes. The other 3 plates are more ethnographic in… Read More

Description:
The finest contemporary map of the Çanakkale sector of the Gallipoli Campaign, the site of the dreaded "Narrows" of the Dardanelles where allied naval forces made their ill-fated attempt to "force the straits" towards taking Istanbul, at a scale of 1:20,000. Drafted in Cairo under the direction of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) at the Arab Bureau's Intelligence Office, based on a recently captured Ottoman map. The main map image is in black with land contours in brown, waterways in blue, and vegetation in green, with soundings printed in the strait and a grid of parallels and meridians in red (with a note that they are based on a magnetic north). The larger squares (each 5 x 5 smaller squares) are numbered (in a single sequence for the six maps in the series) and the 25 smaller squares designated by letters a-z (without e) - printed only in square 33, so that any 600 x 600 metre square on the map can be specified with coordinates. In the early days of World War I, the British and allied forces… Read More

In 1915, the Naval Intelligence Division of the Admiralty established a Geographical Section with the purpose of creating Geographical Handbooks covering different regions across the globe. The primary aim of these handbooks was to provide well-researched and expertly organised material that could be used for analysing naval, military, and political matters, distinct from the actual examination of those issues. The demand for these publications grew rapidly with each new release, garnering a strong reputation for their precision and unbiased nature. These handbooks are currently housed in various Service Establishments and Embassies worldwide. Description:
A lively scene on the Tophane Quay in Istanbul, with the background dominated by the dome and minaret of the 1580 Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque. The tip of a second minaret, perhaps from a different mosque, is visible in the distance. On the quay, an opulently dressed black-bearded Ottoman (a high official in the Emperor's court or a wealthy merchant?) stands in the centre of the scene with his entourage. He wears red robes trimmed with gold and with black decorations, a white turban around a red fez, and a gold waistband with the hilts of two guns sticking out, and carries a walking stick in his left hand. His entourage includes a white-bearded Islamic holy man(?) with a green turban around a red fez, a Greek or Armenian man in a black hat, a dark-skinned woman in green robes, holding a bundle, and several other men, women and children. They appear to be preparing to depart in the boats that stand ready. Two more dark-skinned women, in white robes with red and blue stripes, follow the party deferentially.… Read More
