But not even Toni had suspected that the worm brass ring was anything more exciting than a curtain ring, or that the old stone lion would earn itself the reputation of being the only statue in Venice to have flown across Europe and touched down in the Piazza di Trafalgar in faraway England!

The George and Vulture is mentioned at least 20 times in the 1837 novel The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, who frequently drank there himself. It has been the headquarters of the City Pickwick Club since its foundation.

Feint pencil writing to the reverse "1945 last Hamlet".Scarce programme from this war-time / immediately post-war production for Troops in India, directed by, and starring, John Gielgud. In late 1945 and early 1946 Gielgud toured for ENSA in the Middle and Far East (appearing in Bombay, Madras, Singapore, Saigon, Hong Kong, Delhi, Karachi and Cairo) with Hamlet and Coward's Blithe Spirit. During this tour he played Hamlet on stage for the last time. This programme bears the line "By arrangement with Canteen Services (India)", indicating it dates from one of the touring venues in India.
