Description:
1977 October 18, 1977. Single game ticket. Inscribed by Reggie Jackson in blue marker: "Reggie Jackson / Mr. October / 73-77 / World Series MVP." Original white ticket, printed in red and blue, with $10.00 seat price. Fine. Overall, a pristine example, inscribed by Jackson on a ticket to the very game that earned him the nickname Mr. October. In the 1977 World Series, the New York Yankees defeated the LA Dodgers in six games, avenging their World Series loss to the Cincinnati Reds the previous year. When Reggie Jackson came to the Yankees at the beginning of the 1977 season, he made the confident and prophetic statement, "I didn't come to New York to be a star, I brought my star with me." In Game 6 of the '77 World Series, Jackson earned his nickname, Mr. October, by hitting three consecutive home runs off of first pitches and carrying the team to victory. He won the World Series MVP award, as well as the Babe Ruth Award for his postseason performance. Jackson also won… Read More

Description:
1919 1919. 8 ½ " x 10 ½ " Type 1 black and white photo. Original photo of 1919 Chicago White Sox team in uniforms, seated in front of the bleachers, with Joe Jackson at far left. Very good photo, with a small closed tear to top edge, some writing in black marker to bottom of photo, and some trimming to edges. Overall, a scarce original photo of a team that features prominently in baseball lore. In the Black Sox Scandal, eight Chicago White Sox players - Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Fred McMullin, Charles "Swede" Risberg, George "Buck" Weaver, and Claude "Lefty" Williams - were accused of fixing the 1919 World Series (the White Sox lost the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds five games to three in a best-of-nine series). In response to the scandal, the autocratic former federal judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was appointed as Commissioner of the league in 1920.… Read More

Description:
London: William Heinemann, 1898 First edition, second impression, colonial issue. Publisher's decorative blue cloth (Heinemann's third standard binding), with an illustration to the front board of nine tulips in blind, lettered in gilt, printed on wove paper (colonial sheets). Very good, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, bright gilt, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, a hint of toning to the otherwise fresh pages. Overall, a clean and pleasing copy. Edel and Laurence A52a. This copy is one of 300 copies of the colonial issue of The Two Magics that, according to James' bibliographers, "were transferred to the domestic market, some of them appearing in the third standard binding." Copies such as this one were comprised of American sheets in English bindings to supplement the English printings; Edel and Laurence explain that these colonial issues "replaced quire shortages in the domestic second impression." Accordingly, while this… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., 1894, 1895, 1890 First English edition. One of 500 copies. Three volumes, original publisher's blue cloth. Louis Auchincloss's copy bearing his bookplate to each volume. An additional former owner bookplate to the front pastedowns of each volume, some wear with fraying to spine ends and corners, short tears along spine, hinges cracked and secure. A good, completely unrestored set, housed in a custom cloth box with folding chemise. Edel & Laurence A34b. Auchincloss's writing embodied the old New York traditions of Henry James and Edith Wharton. Auchincloss wrote in his 1977 novel, The Dark Lady: "...Do you know Henry James's The Tragic Muse? It's the best novel written about an actress. A rising young diplomat asks the heroine to give up her career to become his wife and a future ambassadress...Ah how James saw it, the idiocy of any man's thinking that a real actress could even consider balancing love against the stage!" About near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, bright gilt, former owner's inscription to the front pastedowns, scattered spotting, otherwise bright and fresh pages, upper covers have evidence of bookplate removal, spines slightly starting at front hinge of Volume I, otherwise sturdy and intact spines. Overall, bright and attractive, in unsophisticated original cloth. Edel & Laurence A34b. Originally published serially in seventeen installments in the Atlantic Monthly from January 1889-May 1890, The Tragic Muse was Henry James' longest novel to date. The plot tells of two aspiring artists, painter Nick Dormer and actress Miriam Rooth, who endeavor to find both artistic and commercial success. London: Macmillan & Co., 1913 First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by James to front free endpaper: "For Dear Lady Mathew / Henry James / Oct: 1st, 1913." Publisher's dark blue cloth, ruled in blind and lettered in gilt to spine. A near fine copy with spotting to lower part of both boards and light wear to spine ends, foxing to first and last few leaves, else a very clean interior; handwritten note tipped in quoting a passage written by William James about his brother, Henry James (presumably in Lady Mathew's hand); newspaper clipping tipped in quoting text written by James about Sussex. A Small Boy, and Others is an autobiographical account of Henry James' childhood until age fourteen. Its publication was followed by a second memoir, Notes of a Son and a Brother (1914), which picks up where A Small Boy left off. Raised in an upper class, intellectual family, James spent his earliest years travelling around Europe, along the way meeting authors like Charles… Read More
