No." followed by pencilled number "1046" (all on verso). Provenance: Linel (ink collector's stamp on verso). A high quality image that clearly is drawn from life, as the inscription claims. The artist's use of a dark prepared ground recalls the work of Barbara Regina Dietsch and her family. A search of Nissen's index of artists reveals one possible name: the Swiss artist Johann Emmanuel Wyss (1782-1837). However, the maturity and assurance shown in the present drawing would seem to rule him out: he could have been no older than nine in April 1791.

Rare and important work documenting the gold enamelling traditions of northwest India. The authors note that the best enamellers in modern India are the Sikhs, the tradition in Jaipur starting when "Maharaja Man Singh... brought five Sikh enamel workers from Lahore, and... that the descendants of these men still procure their colours from that town to carry on the trade of their forefathers confirms that tradition", and giving the names of the best current practitioners. One of these, Guma Singh, is depicted with in the opening plate alongside three other named workers. A stunning botanical print of a fairy rose, from Jacquin's seminal book on the royal garden at Schonbrunn. In 1752, the Dutch physician and botanist Gerard van Swieten, an old friend of Jacquin's father, invited the young Nikolaus, aged 25 at the time, to come and study in Vienna. Brought about by the recent bankruptcy of Jacquin Sr., this gesture of kindness bore immediate fruit, as the young man showed such great promise in his botanical studies that he attracted the interest of Franz I, Maria Theresa's husband, while working in the Schönbrunn gardens. The Emperor soon commissioned him to produce a systematic catalogue of the plants in the gardens, and in 1754, asked him to voyage to the West Indies to collect tropical plant specimens and live animals for the gardens at Schönbrunn and the royal menagerie. A stunning map of Normandy by Alexis Jaillot, an exceptional example with gilt embellishments. One of the most important figures in French cartography, Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600, Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king, establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the Continent. He was succeeded by his sons, Adrien and Guillaume, and by his son-in-law Pierre Duval, who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who continued to publish his maps and atlases under Sanson's title. A masterpiece of hand colouring by a Dutch old master. A beautiful map of central and Eastern Africa, including Mozambique north to present day Sudan. The map contains numerous coastal place names such as Mozambique Island, Quiloa, Mombaza, and Melinde indicating the importance of the area to both Arab, Portuguese, and traders and explorers from other countries. The map includes numerous rivers, villages and settlements throughout, and is highly embellished with elephants, ostriches and other animals within the map, as well as a decorative cartouche flanked by natives. The two Ptolemaic lakes of Zaire and Zaflan are in the lower portion of the map; Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. 1860. Two small broadsides, each 9 x 11 3/4 inches. Previously folded. Moderate toning and dust soiling, faint foxing at outer margins. Good plus. Japanese news sheet on foreigners. Two interesting Japanese Kawaraban woodblock news sheets documenting some of the foreigners who visited Japan's shores in the 1850s as the country opened up to the west. The first sheet is in four sections and titled "Western Products and Strange Things." It contains images of an English Captain, a black sailor, a microscope of Dutch style, and a mummified body wrapped in sheets. The second shows a Captain's wife and her wolfhound dog, an American Flag, and a depiction of four Russian coins obverse and reverse, and two other coins dated 1843 and 1854.

A rare and extremely fine eighteenth-century set of sea charts of Amelia Island, presented on one sheet, produced by the British royal cartographer. This superb map sheet contains three maps of Amelia Island in northeastern Florida and vicinity, and was at the time the most accurate sea chart of the area ever produced. The great skill of Thomas Jefferys, who had established himself as the era's leading cartographer of America, is evinced by the present work. With great elegance and clarity, it expresses the results of detailed coastal surveys conducted by the sea captain William Fuller.
