The frontispiece appears never to have been bound into the book. Noticing the work in 1807, The Annual Review and History of Literature was rather sniffy about the author's style: "This volume contains a whimsical medley of philosophy, medicine, antiquities, topography, and sentiment; nor is the last by any means the least. Dr. Davis has probably so much habituated himself to the reading of French writers, that he has thence insensibly contracted their peculiarities of manner. York Dispatch Press, 1887. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION? 8vo, 220 x 147 mms.,, pp. 32, printed pink wrappers (soiled), with title cover reading "J. Anthony Emenheiser's Latest Poems"; front wrapper detached and with piece missing from upper corner J. Anthony Emenheiser, whoever he is/was, wishes to appear as a radical and writes on the verso of the title-page, "This work is especially dedicated to mothers and wives and sinful sons and husbands, and to young ladies and gentlemen who are conquered by intemperate habits. This work will be found valuable to such. A short collection of Radical Poems from the pen of J. Anthony Emenheiser." The longest poem is the title piece, "Anti-Destruction" (pp. 3-12), which is followed by "Drink God's Forest Brewed Liquor" (pp. 13-20), "From a Princely Birth to an Intemperate Grave" (pp. 21-28), and "A Flower from God's House" (pp. 29-32). Uncommon: the only copy that I know of is at the Bodleian.

Allen, Glasgown [no date] c. 1900]. 8vo, 183 x 113 mms., pp. 136, portrait of author as frontispiece, four other portraits, original decorated cloth. A very good copy. Shorey describes himself on the title- page as "Convert and Helper of Moody and Sankey. Formerly Superintendent of the McAuley Water Street Mission, U. S. A." Shorey notes in his introduction of "three thousand copies" has now been modified in this second edition. The first edition was simply titled What Jesus is Doing. Shorey was born in 1826, and the first edition is located in two American libraries: Biola University Library and Moody Bible Institute Library. No copy of this second edition traced in any online library database.

The Unitarian minister and poet Jacob Brettell (1793–1862) published The Country Minister in 1821, with a revised edition in 1825. The European Magazine, and London Review of the 1821 first edition opened its review with these honeyed words: "It has not very recently been our good fortune to open a more assuming, yet highly gratifying work, than the little volume now before us; and we do commence, therefore, what critical etiquette usually reserves for it's [sic] bonne bouche at the close by warmly recommending it." Noribegae [Nürnberg], Sumptibus Simonis Halbmayer Bibliopole [no date] 1626. 12mo, 125 x 74 mms., pp. 132, later gray wrappers, but lacks front wrapper, most of spine destroyed, title-page soiled and fragile at margins. The Lutheran theologian Jacobus Herrenschmidt (1578 - 1641) first published this satire with the Elzevirs in 1621 as an investigation, so to speak, of the justly punished, more justly defeated, and most justly condemned name and origin of the Bacchanalia. My Latin is about as good as my Chamicuro (spoken by eight people in Peru), but I think there is a pun in the title and some jokey, specious references in the footnotes.

In Venetia Appresso li Guerigli, 1646. 12mo, 103 x 53, pp. [6] 7 - 264; [2] 3 - 95 [96 "Registro"], including engraved and printed title-page and separate title-page following page 264 for "Rime di Missier Giacomo Sannazaro Nuouamente ristampatem & ripurgate di molti errori: E aggiuntoni di vuouo in questa vitima Impressione, la Terza Parte," with the same imprint and date and continuous collalation (the first leaf is signed [M]), but new pagaination, nicely bound in contemporary vellum; covers a bit soiled but a very good copy. The Arcadia was one of the most popular books that Jacopo Sannazaro (1457 - 1530) published in 1504. Usually called a prosometer, a mixture of prose and poetry, with the author appearing as the shepherd Sincero. Perhaps the most interesting feature of this edition is the publisher's rather lavish dedication to the famous opera singer Anna Renzi (c. 1620 - c. 1665), probably opera's first diva. Uncommon. Small 8vo, 147 x 90 mms., unpaginated, pp. [124], collating A-H8, with the recto of the last leaf bearing the engraved colophon, contemporary vellum (slightly soiled), with the autograph in ink "Walter Shelley/ M. Temple" on the front paste-down end-paper, and in pencil on the recto of the front free end-paper, "Cosmo Gordon/ [?Inschia] 1951." Sadoleto (1477 - 1547), the Italian humanist and churchman, and in 1533 published his De pueris recte instituendis, considering the education of boys in his capacity as Bishop of Carpentras, to be his most important duty. Sadoleto was also friendly with Erasmus (1466 - 1536) and corresponded with him on numerous matters, including education; his Imago pueri Jesu posita in ludo literario is included in the present volume. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 159 x 92 mms., pp. [2] 3 - 296 [297 - 308 Index, 309 - 310 Errata], contemporary sheepskin, spine richly gilt in compartments, red leather label; top and base of spine slightly chipped, upper front joint slightly cracked, corners worn, but good copy with a not quite decipherable presentation inscription on the title-page. The poet and priest Jacques Boileau (1635 - 1716) addresses the question of church benefices and canon law, both topics genuine show stoppers no doubt in the early 18th century. He seems to have had something of a reputation as an eccentric and dangerously curious writer, with Voltaire commenting that he was an "esprit bizarre qui a fait des livres bizarres écrits dans un latin extraordinaire...." He was also the author of the rather popular book on flagellation, Histoires des Flagellants (1701), which is probably more to the taste of our wanton and profane age.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 202 x 118 mms, pp. 112, with additional engraved title, 2 folding plates (one with amateurish colouring), one folding map, contemporary calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments; text slightly water-stained, front joint cracked (but holdign), top and base of spine chipped, a goodish copy, with a contemporary engraved French bookplate of "D. Hendee, Depuis la cartouche d'un carte de Chypre par Blaeuw" and the later bookplate of Charles Platrier, with a sailing ship emblem. Founded by Jean Picard, the Connaissance des temps began publication in 1679 and was still going strong as late as 1930. No copy of this 1706 edition traced in Copac or WorldCat; OCLC locates a copy at Aargauer Kantonsbibliothek.

The translation from the Italian text of N. du Bois into French by Leoni, with the 1715 notes of Inigo Jones incorporated into the text makes this one of the most interesting and formidable editions of I Quattro Libri by Andrea Palladio (1508 - 1580), published in 1570. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 4to, 285 x 202 mms., pp. [iv], 279 [280 blank], a piano-vocal score, finely bound in full contemporary English red morocco, with fine gilt borders and gilt panel with "Evelyn" in centre of front boards, spine ornately gilt in compartments, all edges gilt; inner margin of title-page stained, front joint and corners slightly rubbed but a very good to fine and attractive copy. Offenbach (1819 - 1880) could count La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (1867) as one of his most successful operettas. This English version by Kenney (1821 - 1881) was performed at Covent Garden in November, 1867; and Boosey issued an English libretto in 1868. ODNB notes that the concert promoter John Russell produced "the first faithfully adapted English version of a full-sized opéra bouffe by Offenbach to be produced in Britain.
