Description:
The First UK printing published by Ernest Benn, London in 1951. The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. Publisher's original yellow cloth boards with red designs and titling. Some light pushing at the spine ends and tiny bumping at the lower front corner. Some light age related markings to the boards. Mild toning and spotting to the text-block. Internally free from inscriptions; Some light spotting and offsetting to the blank-endpapers with a small area of erasure to the lower inner quadrant of the blank end-paper. A neat bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown. Internally as usually encountered, there is some light spotting to the pages edges with some more moderate spotting in places, due to the cheap quality of the paper stock used. A small 0.5cm closed tear to the lower edge of page 176 and a small ovoid area (1.5 x 0.5 cm) of loss to the blank lower edge of page 181 (see images). The scarce WRAPPER is neatly price-clipped and is in Very Good+ condition. A little loss, rubbing and creasing at… Read More

Description:
The First UK printing published by Constable, London in 1987. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. A hint of toning to the text-block and page edges. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. Just a hint of creasing to the upper edges. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed (without dedication) to the half-title by the author. Shortly after the filming began of 'The Last of England', Jarman also began work on this volume of his journals, which contains diary entries and interviews, notes on the script, stills from the filming, and B/W photographs of Derek, his family and friends. Amongst other things, Jarman writes of his childhood, coming to terms with his sexuality, life in the 60's and 70's, his early work as a painter and designer for Ken Russell's groundbreaking films and his debut as a director. A sharp copy. Signed titles by this author are very scarce. More images available on request. Ashton Rare… Read More

Description:
An early UK printing published by Bristol, J.W. Arrowsmith, London circa 1918. Although the publishing details state first published in 1889, I believe this to be a later edition published as part of the 'Arrowsmith's 1/3 Net Series'. There is a penned dated inscription to the half-title : 'Red X Hospital , 1918' which I think is very likely to be around the publication date of this edition. The BOOK is in near Fine condition and appears unread. Some toning and light spotting to the text-block. Toning to the page edges due to the quality of the paper stock used with some offsetting to the blank end-paper. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some light age related markings. The original publisher's price has been overlaid with a revised publisher's price sticker (price 1/6 net) to the spine. The colourful illustration to the front panel (unattributed) remains very bright. The 'Arrowsmith 1/3 Net' series were issued with 'specially designed pictorial wrappers'. The… Read More

Description:
The First UK printing published by Boriswood, London in 1935. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. Light toning and dustiness to the text-block. A small area of toning corresponding to the wrapper chipped area at the upper spine end. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is in Very Good+ condition being slightly marked and rubbed and a little dusty in places. A little loss at the upper spine end and upper front spine fold. With the 'Book Guild' recommendation sticker on the front as issued. The wrapper looks striking in the removable brodart archival cover. T.E. Lawrence's name features on the front panel of the dustwrapper and most of the blurb quotes from his preface. The three-page Preface is in fact the letter Lawrence wrote to the publisher recommending publication but prophesying commercial failure thereby. Very Scarce. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Description:
The sole UK printing published by The Whitechapel Art Gallery, London in 1951. The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. Complete with 48 pages. The printed card covers and frontispiece were designed by Barbara Jones. Staple- bound, the staples are minimally rusted with no 'bleed' to the paper. The covers have some light age related markings. Free from inscriptions. Light spotting to the text-block with a few lights spots internally. An exceptionally rare, ephemeral item of Barbara Jones' output. Timed to coincide with the 'Festival of Britain', the exhibition curated by Barbara Jones and Tom Ingram brought together popular and traditional 'art' produced for many and varied purposes but not intended for the gallery, and therefore under the radar of the art establishment. In her introduction, Jones writes of how our apprehension and judgement of such quotidian objects move from seeing them as, first 'Quaint' then 'Charming' and at last 'Good'. 'The virtues of British art are as visible here,' writes Jones… Read More

Description:
Published by Clover Hill Editions, London in 1977. Number 'XXX1' of only 80 special copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked 'Clover Hill' (made for Douglas Cleverdon in 1936). The BOOK is in Fine condition, bound in quarter-morocco and marbled boards. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most significant work. These engravings were initially printed in the Golden Cockerel edition in 1927. Jones, however, felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones agreed to 'Clover Hill Editions' reprinting the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present… Read More

Description:
An unknown printing published by Faber and Faber - no date. In as far as I can determine this title was only published with its distinctive grey front cover, with red and yellow lettering, in hardback format. I can find no other paperback copy for sale in this format. This, combined with the fact that this volume has no publication data, such as date, no title page and does not include the plates of the published volume, leads me to conclude this is probably a proof copy. This copy came with a number of other volumes on WWI from the library of Norman Hancock who also wrote on his experiences of the First World War, notably in A Martial Medley (1931) along with David Jones, Eric Partridge and several others. This connection with Jones further makes me think it likely this is a proof copy sent by the publishers to Hancock. The BOOK is wraps format and is in Very Good+ condition. A generally very clean copy throughout. Some light creasing to the front cover. The spine at some point has had clear tape… Read More
