Description:
Orig. pub. Charleston 1851. Print on Demand Edition 2019. viii, 592 pp., maps As noted in the title, this volume is a collection of traditions and reminiscences of the American Revolution in the South. Many of the histories written during this time concentrated heavily on actions around the coastal areas. Johnson covers that aspect; but almost half of the book details persons and events taking place in the upper part of South Carolina, particularly the districts of Fairfield, Chester, York, Spartanburg, Lancaster, Edgefield, Ninety-Six and Union--areas which saw some of the hardest-fought battles and skirmishes. Additionally, there is coverage of many events taking place over the borders in North Carolina and Georgia. Sketches of most of the famous men are included but there is numerous mention of other less famous men and their activities. The sieges of Charleston, Savannah, and Augusta receive coverage along with the more famous battles and many smaller skirmishes occurring througout the… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. New York 1901. Reprinted 1972, 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2021. (ii), 224 pp. + illus. In this classic of Loyalist literature, Elizabeth Lichtenstein Johnson (1764-1848) describes her life as daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother in Savannah, Canada, Britain, and the West Indies during the period 1764 -1837. Born near Savannah, she was the daugher of Russian emigrant John Lichtenstein. She married Dr. William Martin Johnston in Savannah. He was a member of one of Georgia's most prominent Loyalist families. In the early days of the Revolution, they left Georgia for British Halifax. He had fought for the King in New York and returned to Georgia with the British invasion of 1778. He and his men were involved in many of the battles of the Southern campaign and two of his brothers were killed in the war. Their father, Dr. Lewis Johnson, had been treasurer of the colony of Georgia and served on the Governor's Council. Surviving the siege of Savannah in 1779, Elizabeth Johnston spent many… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Savannah, 1878. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2009. 263, 64 pp. + maps, index This volume was originally published as Volume IV of the Georgia Historical Society's Collections and includes Itinerant Observations in America, 1745-46, by Edward Kimber. It is an insightful look into Georgia's history through a detailed examination of towns that flourished and then faded away. With specific emphasis on the colonial period, the work explores the role Georgia's settlers played in conflicts with Spanish and British colonial powers, as well as the economic and social factors that caused these towns to thrive, but ultimately to fade away. Specific focus is given to the towns of Old Ebernezer (1733) on the Savannah River, Frederica (1735) on St. Simon's Island, Abercorn (1733) on a tributary of the Savannah, Sunbury (1758) on the Medway River, and Hardwick (1755) on the Ogeechee River. The communities of Petersburg, Jacksonborough, and Francisville are also mentioned as are about fifteen… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Boston 1883. Reprinted 1965, 1966, 1969. Print on Demand Edition 2016. the set This is the "classic" work on the history of Georgia through the Revolutionary War by Charles Colcock Jones Jr., one of the most versatile and prolific historical writers of all time. He was the first native-born Georgian to write a history of his state. In his U.S. IANA, Wright Howes called this a "most scholarly history of the colonial and revolutionary period of this state." The history received accolades from fellow historians for "its style and extensive use of original sources." Volume One deals with the aboriginal and colonial times while Volume Two covers the revolutionary period. Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe, a young philanthropist who was inspired to find a refuge for "unfortunate individuals, confined for debt, of respectable connections and guilty of no crime." In granting the charter for the colony in 1732, the King was motivated by the anxiety of the Carolinians to establish a buffer to… Read More
