1863. Wien, Wilhelm Braumüller, 1863. 4to. Original printed wrappers; pp. 12; two large format photographs; slightly soiled, else very good, now contained in a purpose-made flapcase. First edition. At the time of writing, Jäger was the director of the Vienna Zoological Garden. The skeleton, two magnificent photographs of which illustrate this paper, was found by Prof. Dr. v. Hochstetter during his time in New Zealand as part of the Austrian Novara Expedition to which he was appointed as senior geologist. According to the New Zealand Dictionary of National Biography entry for Hochstetter, he and a small group of others made a scientific exploration of the North Island: "Hochstetter and Haast then travelled by ship to Nelson, calling briefly at New Plymouth. They examined the Dun Mountain copper prospects, the Jenkins Hill coal deposits, Lake Rotoiti and Cape Farewell. 1718. Paris: Collombat. 1718. Small quarto. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with red morocco gilt label, marbled endpapers; pp. [x] + 78 + 96 + [v, contents], 34 plates, engraved headpieces; binding a little bumped to extremities, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, manuscript notes in ink to flyleaf, previous owner's signature to title page, internally very clean and bright, very good. First edition. Louis Joblot (1645-1723) is now overshadowed by his contemporary Leeuwenhoek but was an equally innovative scientist. In this volume, his landmark work and the first French book on microscopical research, he presents his own technical improvements to the microscope, his observations of protozoa and, crucially, his rejection of spontaneous generation. He observed many animalcules for the first time, classifiying them according to shape, and was the leading discoverer of infusoria until 1773, making this book an important document of early microbiology.

1786. Dublin : Printed by P. Byrne, No. 108, Grafton-Street, 1786. 4to., disbound, pp. 40. A little dog-earring and occasional browning otherwise a very good copy preserved in cloth fall-down-back box with leather label. First Dublin edition, first issue, with Byrne the only named printer. Copies of this edition are also found with the imprint "Dublin : printed for Luke White, and P. Byrne, 1786." Comparing both copies held at Harvard the latter imprint with both names has a cancel stub behind the title page from which we presume that that is a later issue. OCLC records only Huntingdon Library and Harvard for this imprint. Irish politician John Courtenay frequented London literary society, attaching himself to James Boswell as a fellow admirer of Samuel Johnson, on whose character he published A Poetical Review in 1786. Courtenay's poetical biography was one of the first to be published after Johnson's death. Courtenay is one of the biographers pictured in James Sayer’s famous… Read more

1844. London, J. Madden & Co., 1844. 2 vols. 8vo. Sometime rebound in quarter brown leather over dark blue cloth, ruled, titled and dated in gilt to spine; pp. xvi, 492; viii, 447, 8, publisher's catalogue, 2 toned lithogrraphic frontispieces, retaining tissue guards, one folding map; a little scuffing to spines, and some discolouration to top edges, but generally a very good copy of a rare set, particularly with the interior so clean and fresh. First Edition of this increasingly hard to find set of travel literature, which relates the nature of Johnston's travels in Abyssinia. It dwells on the visit to the court of Shoa, and the anthropological differences between tribes in the area, modern day Ethiopia and Somalia. In addition, it covers a wide range of ethnological and enviromental concerns, including sections on Islam, mirages, scorpion hunting and others. In particular, Johnston had a fascination with hydrology, which manifests itself in a higher than average number of passages on rivers and lakes.
