Publisher's original blue cloth, image of deer blocked in gilt to upper cover, lettered in gilt to spine; pp. xvi, [2], 297, [2, advertisements]; frontispiece and numerous illustrations to text, 3 folding colour maps; some rubbing and a few minor marks to binding, occasional very light foxing, but still a good copy. First edition. In 1892 Frederick Jackson began preparations for the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Franz Josef Land. To gain some experience of winter travel, he undertook a preliminary journey along the coast of the Barents Sea from Vaygach Island to Varanger Fjord. During this time, Jackson spent a year with the local Samoyed people, learning from them skills that proved invaluable for the success of the later Jackson-Harmsworth expedition. In Oslo, Nansen's brother Alexander had been helpful in testing and selecting skying equipment and sledges. It was Jackson who later more or less accidentally saved Fridtjof Nansen. Original cloth, ornamented and lettered in gilt; pp. 263, 15 (publisher's catalogue}, frontispiece in photogravure with tissue guard; a litle ofseting from endpapers, evenly a little toned due to paper stock, as usual; a very good copy of a very uncommon work. First edition of this first-hand account of life among Yemenis, written by a British advisor in the Yemen and South West Arabia. 'I was inspired by a love of these Tribesmen of Al Yemen with whom I have worked for ten years, including a very close sojourn in their midast of three years' he writes in the preface (p. 7). One of the better insights into Southern Aranbian society, customs, family life, food and drink.

First edition, very scarce, especially in this condition. 'The object of this book is to give as fully as possible the essential history of the Russian Navy in the past, a full and detailed account of the Navy as it is, and, finally, to include all those side questions which, though not directly naval matters, are yet intimately connected with the Russian sea service' (Preface).

Original half-morocco over cloth-covered boards; spine ornamented and lettered in gilt, in half-morocco drop-down-back box with large oval lettering-piece on lid, black velvet lining; ff. [iii], [50], 50 colour-facsimile plates; together with the prospectus and with the original styrofoam-lined shipping box. The first facsimile edition of one of the most luxurious German topographical works (first, 1798). These atmospheric views of the Rhine in fine facsimiles and appropriately hand-bound and presented where sold for £950 at the time. This is number 7 of an intended printrun of 750, which was not achieved, because the ambitious project collapsed (insolvency of the publisher). The original edition was offered a couple of years ago at a German bookfair for €98,000. - Weight: just under 9kg.

Signed in pencil by the photographer to the recto of the first image. First and only edition. The photographer Cuny Janssen travelled to Macedonia in the wake of the conflict between that country and Albanian rebels over the redrawing of Macedonia's boundaries. Gerry Badger and Martin Parr note in The Photobook: A History Volume II. , "This is a subtle book about the aftermath of conflict. Along with the children's portraits on each facing page Janssen places photographs of the Macedonian landscape, so that the book can be read from either orientation. … Like the portraits the landscapes are neutral in tone, but not cold and distant. The Royal Jennerian Society was formed at the London Tavern on January 19, 1803. Under the patronage of the Prince and Princess of Wales, the society's goal was to promote the eradication of smallpox through vaccination, work which had been pioneered by Edward Jenner. - Thomas Whitmore was M.P. for Bridgenorth, Shropshire.

First edition, signed by Lyndon Baines Johnson to gilt bookplate on half-title. This is Johnson's own account of his controversial presidency. "This historic memoir...illuminates the enormous gulf between the simple virtues Johnson the man espoused and the conspiratorial politics Johnson the president employed. Tragedy shadowed his flawed presidency and it hovers over this dignified, self-serving 'perspective' like an old crony" (Kirkus Reviews).

A little dog-earring and occasional browning otherwise a very good copy preserved in cloth fall-down-back box with leather label. First Dublin edition, first issue, with Byrne the only named printer. Copies of this edition are also found with the imprint "Dublin : printed for Luke White, and P. Byrne, 1786." Comparing both copies held at Harvard the latter imprint with both names has a cancel stub behind the title page from which we presume that that is a later issue. OCLC records only Huntingdon Library and Harvard for this imprint. Irish politician John Courtenay frequented London literary society, attaching himself to James Boswell as a fellow admirer of Samuel Johnson, on whose character he published A Poetical Review in 1786. The Crimean War necessitated this map of the Balkan's, a part of Europe not well known to the British public.

Very uncommon and beautiful first edition. 'Even at this early date Jones expressed concern at the rapid disappearance of our early houses. The primary value of his book lies in the absolutely superb photographs' (Charles Wood). T he first good photographic study of New England’s historic houses was Alvin Lincoln Jones’ Under Colonial Roofs which appeared in 1894. The pictures, which are of a high quality, show us many buildings that have since disappeared. The picture of the Paul Revere House, when compared to a modern view, gives us some idea of how drastic the 1907 restoration must have been.
