Chocolate brown and cafe-au-lait cloth in the original near fine dust-wrapper. Some light creasing to rear. In mylar wraps. Cracking to joints just before the appendix. A crucial work for anyone interested in the development of suburbia or metro-land. The book gives full details of the types of houses then springing up around all of England's major cites in the post-WWI effort to create 'homes fit for heroes'. Description:
London: Printed for J. Newbery 1760, 1760. First edition. 8vo (200x120mm). pp. [2], vi, 264. Contemporary calf with double fillet borders in gilt to upper and lower covers, five raised bands to spine, compartments simply decorated with gilt borders. The binding is worn in places with scuffing, particularly to the foot of the upper cover at the joint and on the lower cover near the joint where there is cracking. Corners bumped and rubbed. But overall this is a handsome, simple and tight binding. The contents are in excellent condition, bright and fresh with only a little foxing. The corner of K1 has been lost in opening but this does not affect the text. Edges sprinkled red. The dedication, although declared to be James is by Samuel Johnson who was a school friend of James's from Lichfield. This highly readable book contains a series of case studies showing the horrific results of dogs biting people. The resulting "hydrophobia" or rabies is described with some relish by James who then offers a number… Read More

Fifty-five hand coloured aquatint plates and one uncoloured plate containing two etchings showing battle plans for the Bombardment of Algiers an the Battle of Trafalgar. The original paintings were done by Thomas Whitcombe (c1760-1824) who was one of the finest marine painters of the time. The hand-coloured plates were done by Sutherland, Bailey and Jeakes and are of the highest quality and are in superb condition in this copy. The paper is watermarked 1827 which provides a clue as to the date of this copy. All the tissue guards are present. The title page vignette of Britannia standing on the English shore while Neptune, kneeling before her, invites her to conquer the broad oceans has been hand coloured. The text describes the battles or other scenes (mainly the capture of French or Spanish ships) in the prints and, in some… Read More

Description:
Marburg: Marburger Tapetenfabrik J.B. Schaefer & Co, 1972 1972, 1972. Roll of wallpaper comprising 14½ identical, repeated coloured screenprint on silver metallic paper, with full margins. Approx. 8220 x 535 mm (323 ½ x 21 in). This image (also known as Right Hand Woman) was designed by Jones in 1970. It was made as a roll of wallpaper in 1972 by one of the oldest wallpaper factories in Germany in the series X Art Wall Collection. Other artists participating in this extraordinary project included Jean Tinguely, Otmar Alt and Eric Stanton. A single panel sold at Christies in 2008 for £525 and a complete roll would appear to be a scarce item. On its own, this is a striking image. Multiplied fourteen times, it is the stuff of nightmares or dreams. It is impossible to deny that this print is controversial, politically incorrect and sexist. But, whether we like it or not, that is the point for Jones. "It's collateral damage", he said, "I wanted to offend the canons of accepted worth in art. I found the… Read More

Description:
Malmaison n.p. 1813. Letter signed "Josephine", addressed to the "Directeur Général des Postes," Malmaison, 12 February 1813. Text in French. One page, 226 x 185mm (mild creases). Seventy-seven words. In a nice example of patronage Josephine uses this letter to the Directeur Général des Postes to recommend a young man called Gaulthier for a job within the Post service. She says that if he can agree to this, then it will make two people happy as a job will assist Gaulthier in his marriage to the daughter of a woman in service to Josephine and whose father is "valet de chambre" of the Viceroi. We have been unable to discover if M. Gaulthier was given a job but he had an in with the right person. Josephine, who by this point was no longer married to Napoleon although he had made her the Duchess of Navarre, was the aunt of the wife of the Directeur Général des Postes, Antoine-Marie Chamans, comte de Lavalette so perfectly placed. Sadly, Josephine died of pneumonia the following year so this might… Read More

Housed in the cardboard slipcase covered with green paper and edged in silver paper to which there is some slight marking and wear to the edges.
