London,: At the Hat & Feather in Coleman Street,, [c1756].. 135 by 150mm. (5.25 by 6 inches).. Prints,""George Jackson Hat-Maker ... S is for Sombrerero Engraved trade card, with manuscript annotations in ink, dated 1756 in mansucript to verso. Trade card for the long-established hat-maker, George Jackson, who worked under the sign of the hat and feather in Coleman Street, London. Legal action taken by a large group including Jackson demonstrates that he was active as a hatter on Coleman Street in 1757. The records of the Sun Fire Office show that Jackson was still insured at Number 74 in 1788, and 'Kent's Directory for the Year 1793' and the 'Declaration of the Merchants, Bankers, Traders, and other inhabitants of London' in 1795 both list Jackson in the same profession at the same address. Jackson's career not only spanned many decades but also appears to have attracted clients from far and wide. Rather than being decorated with an elaborate design or depiction of his shop sign, Jackson's trade… Read More

[Amsterdam,: Johannes Janssonius,, 1648].. 182 by 236mm. (7.25 by 9.25 inches).. Engraved map, German text on verso. Published in the second German edition (1648) of Janssonius' new edition of the miniature version of the Mercator-Hondius, 'Atlas Minor Gerardi Mercatoris a I. Honius pluri-mis aeneis Tabulis…'. This atlas was one of a series launched by Janssonius "before he joined forces with Henricu Hondius in 1629, filling the gap left by the sale of the copperplates for the 'Atlas Minor' sometime after 1621, and taken to England where they were first used in the 1624 edition of 'Hakluytus Posthumus or Purchas His Pilgrimes. The new Janssonius maps were engraved by Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius). The maps were slightly larger than those in Hondius' 'Atlas Minor'" (Hubbard). The first edition appeared with Latin text in 1628, followed by a French edition in 1630, a Dutch edition also in 1630, two German editions in 1631 and 1648, and a further Latin edition in 1634. The map is a direct… Read More

This map of Sumatra """"details the Malacca Strait, Singapore, and the western shores of the Malay Peninsula, at a moment when the VOC's sights were particularly well focused on the region. The political intrigue, which often spanned the strait, was heightened when the Dutch seized Malacca from the Portuguese in 1644. The VOC already had markets in India and Europe for the vast reserves of tin found in Malaya, but the tin deposits were under the control of the north Sumatran sultanate of Aceh. In an attempt to secure the tin for themselves, the Dutch, in around 1650, entered into an alliance with Aceh's perennial Malayan enemy, Johor, disrupting ports in north Sumatra and instigating the revolt of Aceh's vassal states"""" (Suarez). Description:
Amsterdam,: G. Valk & P. Schenk,, [c1715].. 460 by 570mm (18 by 22.5 inches).. Hand-coloured double-page engraved map. In this attractive and unusual map, the counties of Middlesex and Hertfordshire are shown together and oriented with north to the right of the plate. Jan Jansson Jr (1588-1664) was the son of a bookseller and publisher who had worked with Jodocus Hondius Sr. From about 1633 onwards, his imprint appears on the title-pages of the Mercator-Hondius "Atlas", in conjunction with his brother-in-law, Henry, as they re-issued their "Atlas" in competition with the Blaeus. At this time, many of the maps were re-drawn or replaced and the "Atlas" was expanded to become the "Atlas Novus" series, an attempt to rival Blaeu's "Atlas Maior" for size and quality. Jansson began to prepare his volume devoted to the British Isles c.1640. In 1644 he published eleven county maps in an appendix to the "Atlas", but they appeared from 1646 in the "Novus Atlas". Jansson's county maps are seen far less… Read More

Description:
London,: Thomas Jefferys,, 1772.. 2350 by 2900mm. (92.5 by 114.25 inches).. Large-scale engraved map, fine original full-wash colour, on twenty sheets, dissected and mounted on linen in four sections, folding into modern calf pull-off slipcase, red morocco label, lettered in gilt to spine. Thomas Jefferys was one of the most important and prolific map publishers of the eighteenth century and was appointed Cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1748, and later to George III. Apart from his publishing business he produced many important atlases and maps of America and the West Indies and surveyed and engraved many large-scale maps of English counties including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Westmoreland and Yorkshire. The huge cost involved in these projects was a major contribution to his slide into insolvency and he became bankrupt in 1766. Surprisingly it made little difference to his business activities, "having found some friends who have been compassionate enough to re-instate me in… Read More

Thomas Jefferys was involved in one capacity or another in no less than ten English large-scale surveys in the latter part of the eighteenth century. The present map of Bedfordshire was his second foray, having engraved Benjamin Donn's award winning map of Devon in the same year. Description:
Antwerp,, 1593.. 362 by 426mm. (14.25 by 16.75 inches).. Double page engraved map. A fine example of de Jode's second map of South America. The map shows part of Central America and the whole of South America, including a large landmass representing the Tierra del Fuego merging into Australia. It is one of the earliest maps to show the continent on its own, and the earliest Dutch map of South America. The Southern American continent's interior is densely detailed with many place names, annotations and images describing the territory, its people, and the flora and the fauna. Two vignettes show life at a cannibal's campsite, including a human-based dinner, and a battle between indigenous people armed with bows and arrows and explorers armed with rifles. The seas are filled with several vessels, boats, monsters, and more annotations. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes' atlas 'Speculum orbis terrae'. The 'Speculum' was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with… Read More

Description:
[Antwerp,, 1593].. 300 by 510mm. (11.75 by 20 inches).. Double page engraved map; small tear to top left border not affecting the image, skillfully repaired. The map shows the Holy Land and the Middle East from Turkey to Persia, including the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus in the west, the Black and Caspian Seas in the north, and part of Egypt and the Persian Gulf in the south. The map is based on Giacomo Gastaldi's three-sheet map of Asia. The westernmost part, which is covered by the present example, was first issued in 1559, whereas the following two were published in 1561. Later on, in 1565, Lafreri added two narrow sheets covering the area south of the equator, including most of the Indonesian islands. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes' atlas 'Speculum orbis terrae'. The 'Speculum' was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. It was designed to compete with Abraham Ortelius' atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', which had been… Read More

Antwerp,: Gerard Smits,, [c1590].. 410 by 560mm. (16.25 by 22 inches).. Double-page engraved map, Latin text to verso, watermark of a bunch of grapes within a shield, banner below, Briquet 13215. Unrecorded second state of Gerard de Jode's map of Asia. The map, published by Gerard de Jode in his 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' in 1578, is not only one of the first maps to depict the Philippines, but also one of the earliest to name Singapore, here marked 'Cinapura'. The cartography is based on Mercator's seminal world map 'Nova et Aucta Orbis Terrae Descriptio', published in 1569. The work stretches from eastern Europe to the west coast of North America. Although Ortelius had included the west coast of America on his map of Southeast Asia 'Indiae Orientalis', published in 1570, its is highly unusual for maps of the whole continent to show America's coastline, with the only other sixteenth century example published in Solinus's Polyhistor of 1538. The present example has been heavily reworked and… Read More

Description:
Antwerp,: Gerard Smits,, 1578.. 315 by 525mm. (12.5 by 20.75 inches).. Double page engraved map. A detailed map of Portugal, oriented to the west. Gerard de Jode (1509–1591), cartographer, engraver and publisher, lived and worked in Antwerp. In 1547 he was admitted to the Guild of St. Luke and began his work as a publisher and print seller. He often printed the works of other cartographers, including Gastaldi's map of the world in 1555, Jacob van Deventer's map of Brabant in 1558, Ortelius' eight-sheet map of the world in 1564, and maps by Bartholomeus Musinus and Fernando Alvares Seco. His most outstanding work was his atlas 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' published in 1578. De Jode intended it as competition for Ortelius' 'Theatrum'. The two, who made their living partly as map sellers, were competitors and apparently not always on good terms. It has been suggested that Ortelius was responsible for delaying the publication of de Jode's work, by using his extensive contacts to prevent de Jode's atlas… Read More

Description:
London: Digested and Published by W. Faden, Geographer to the King,, Jan[uar]y 1st, 1791.. 1160 by 620mm (45.75 by 24.5 inches).. Two engraved charts, on two sheets joined, fine original hand-colour, inset plan of Funchal, first chart with view of Funchal and plan of the road of Funchal. The British had particularly strong links with Madeira. The island had been under Portuguese rule since its discovery in 1418 - Portugal being the country with which England had (and still has) its oldest diplomatic alliance - based on the Treaty of Windsor of 1386. This alliance was further strengthened when, in 1662, Charles II married Catherine of Braganza. As a result Englishmen were allowed to settle on the island. Many of the new arrivals would later become involved in the lucrative Madeira port trade. It is likely that William Johnston, the author of the present chart, was involved in the industry, as one William Johnston is recorded as a partner in Newton, Gordon, and Johnston from 1777-1791. The company -… Read More

Engraved map on four sheets, in four sections, fine original hand-colour, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into original maroon buckram, lettered in gilt to spine. Stanford's impressive library map of South America. In the early 1850s Edward Stanford commissioned the explorer and geographer Alexander Keith Johnston to prepare large wall maps of the continents: Europe; Australasia; Asia; Africa; North America; and South America. The series, entitled "Library Map" was well received by the general public as can be seen by this glowing extract from the 'Austrlalian Mail' of 1859: "A bad map exhausts the patience both of the student and the man of business. It is dear at any price, however low. On the other hand, it is a real pleasure to study a good, bold, well-executed map, brought up to the latest date. After the fall of Bonaparte, he refused to renounce his allegiance to the Emperor and left the government in 1817, beginning a career as an architecture and landscape artist.
