Creased where previously folded, but fine otherwise. From Charles T. Jackson, discoverer of ether anesthesia and noted American geologist, to George M. Folsom, probably George McKean Folsom (1837-82), a Unitarian minister in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Writing shortly after returning from New York, "where I have been giving a few lectures on the Science of Geology," Jackson "offer[s] . . . a specimen of my very poor chirography, feeling highly complimented by the wish, you have kindly expressed, that I should do so." Jackson also sent Folsom "a copy of my anniversary address delivered before the American Institute, at the Tabernacle in the City of New York," containing "some suggestions . . . that I hope may prove useful to our Country & to the cause of Science." Jackson's address, delivered on 16 October 1851, was published on… Read More

Minor flaws visible in the large outer margins of the silk, not affecting the image. In a large and attractive archival frame. This famous image, of which only a very few examples are known, was woven by machine using 24,000 Jacquard cards, each of which had… Read More

Description:
Southampton, 1864. James, Henry (1803-77). Autograph letter signed to Archibald Smith. 4pp. London, November 8, 1864. 184 x 117 mm. Fine. From Sir Henry James, director-general of the Ordnance Survey (the British government mapping agency), to Scottish lawyer and mathematician Archibald Smith, best known for his work on magnetism and the Earth's magnetic field, particularly in relation to navigation. James' letter discusses the survey of Jerusalem (then part of the Ottoman Empire) which was being performed by the Ordnance Survey for the purpose of improving the city's water supply and sanitary services (the results of this survey were published in 1865 under the title Ordnance Survey of Jerusalem). Smith was an advocate of the Royal Society's proposal that pendulum measurements of the Dead Sea elevation be taken during this survey; James replied as follows: " . . . As regards the proposal of the Royal Society, which you have recommended them to support, to have pendulum observations taken in the… Read More

Description:
Paris: Alcan, 1889. First edition. [6], 496pp. Front flyleaf inscribed: "A Monsieur le Dr. Ryam Hommage respectueux P. Janet." Quarter calf, marbled boards ca. 1889. Some foxing but very good. Garrison-Morton.com 4976.1: "Janet argued that 'hysterical symptoms are due to subconscious fixed ideas that have been isolated and usually forgotten. Split off from consciousness - ‘dissociated' - they embody painful experiences, but become autonomous by virtue of their segregation from the main stream of consciousness' (E.L. Bliss, Multliple personality, allied disorders, and hypnosis, N.Y., Oxford University Press, 1986). This predated Breuer and Freud's announcement of their virtually identical discovery (No. 4977.3) by four years.
