Description:
Melbourne: Pfaff Pinschof & Co, 1890. Photogravure, on India paper, mounted onto thick wove paper. A fine copy of this lively view of the winner's enclosure for the 1886 Victoria Derby held at Flemington racecourse, Melbourne, Australia The Victoria Derby has been held at the Flemington course in November every year since 1855. The first race was won by Rose of May. The present scene, painted by Austrian-born artist Carl Kahler, shows Trident, the winner of the 1886 race, in the winner's enclosure surrounded by many of the most prominent citizens of Melbourne and the Australian racing world. Trident foaled in Australia in 1883, by Robinson Crusoe (an Australian stallion), from Coconut (an imported mare from Great Britain). Trident went on to win six major races in 1886 (including the Australian Derby) and a further eight in 1887. Kahler went on to spend some time in San Francisco (some reference works suggest that he died there during the earthquake of 1906, but the most recent information is that… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: published by Daniel McIntosh, sold in London by Boydell & Co., and Colnaghi & Co, 1814. Aquatint, printed in brown ink, coloured by hand, by John Clark. A lively view of Georgian Edinburgh. A fine view of a windy day on one of the most fashionable streets of the period: in the foreground a stagecoach is leaving, laden with passengers and apparently pursued by a late-comer who gestures in an attempt to attract the attention of anyone on the coach. More serenely, the coach is flanked by fashionable Edinburgh going about its daily business. This view may be seen as a precursor to John Clark's own Views in Scotland published in London between 1824 and 1825 with a total of 35 plates. A 19th century gazetteer notes that 'Edinburgh presents, from almost every point of view whence it can be viewed such scenic and architectural groupings as are perhaps unrivalled in any existing city in the world. It possesses attractions peculiarly its own, and fixes the gaze and challenges the admiration of a… Read More

Hartford: Published by E. Huntington, 1832. Engraving. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some minor scuffs in the margins. Framed (1 1/2" gold leaf Federal frame with ribbed panel and acanthus lead corners, archival Antique white mat and Plexiglas). A charming engraving of Henry Clay by the accomplished American engraver Jarvis Griggs Kellogg. Kellogg came from a family of engravers who established one of the most successful print publishing businesses in the country. Unlike his brothers, Kellogg learned the art of engraving in Boston and spent the majority of his career there. This fine image reproduces a painting by the American portrait painter Charles Bird King, which is now housed in the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. King studied under Edward Savage in London, but his best work was executed in Washington where he remained for the duration of his career. Although he painted many beautiful still-lives, he garnered a reputation as a talented portrait painter of… Read More

Expertly bound to style in red straight grain morocco, covers bordered in gilt, spine gilt A very rare complete set of views engraved by Daniell after Kershaw, depicting the aftermath of the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-26). Kershaw was a member of the invading forces who made drawings of the journey between Rangoon and the capital. Announced for sale in the Asiatic Journal, they are there described as "extremely beautiful, and do very great credit to the pencil of Capt. Kershaw, and the engraver of the eminent artist conjoined with him. The gorgeous temples and peculiar edifices at Rangoon, Prome, Pagahm Mew &c. are represently with great fidelity; and the landscapes are exquisite. Description:
Amsterdam: Johannes Van Keulen, 1687. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring. Inset of the waters near Vera Cruz. (Expert restoration at sheet edges). Van Keulen's scarce 17th century chart of the western Gulf of Mexico, oriented with west toward the top of the page. Van Keulen's rare chart of the western portion of the Gulf of Mexico "covers the coastline from the panhandle of present day Florida around to the Yucatan peninsula. The main feature of this map is its originality of form. It is the first sea chart of the western portion of the Gulf of Mexico detailing the coastal waters of present-day Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The geography is largely derived from the exceedingly rare Hessel Gerritz chart of c. 1631" (Burden). As expected, most of the toponyms are Spanish and the mouth of the Mississippi is labelled Baja de Spirito Sancto. Oriented to the west, "it represented the most sophisticated rendering of the coast then available" (Martin & Martin). The Texas… Read More

Description:
[N.p., 1852. Oil on canvas, early title in ink on the stretcher, 19 7/8 x 30 1/8 inches, relined. In fine period gilt frame. An intriguing early view of Singapore as it looked in 1852. In 1852, Charles W. Kinloch, a British officer serving in the Bengal Civil Service, journeyed to Penang, Singapore and Java on the recommendation of his doctors, to recover from his poor health in Calcutta. Upon his return, he anonymously published De Zieke Reiziger; Or, Rambles in Java and the Straits in 1852 (London: 1853), illustrated with 23 coloured and tinted plates. Among the illustrations is a view from the same perspective, which appears to be after the present painting. Bastin and Brommer confirm that "the plates [in the printed book] are presumably after drawings by Kinloch himself." However, it also seems possible that the painting was acquired by Kinloch in Singapore from a Chinese export artist. In the book, Kinloch writes of this view of Singapore: "The best view of the town and the surrounding country… Read More
