Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Original glossy double-weight gelatin silver print from negative, 14 x 11" (inclusive of margins). Numbered in pencil on verso. About fine. An original print of one of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present image is a stunning portrait of the preparation involved in the staging of a mass Zulu marriage ceremony. To the left of the image and continuing diagonally towards the right, the unmarried Zulu tribeswomen are lined up wearing elaborate beaded loin coverings and beaded chest adornments, in their hands short spears. They are lined up behind a string, presumably their stage marking, and the principal characters portrayed by Stanley Baker, Ulla Jacobsen, Jack Hawkins, and Michael Caine,… Read More

Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Two original glossy double-weight gelatin silver prints from negatives, 11 x 14" (inclusive of margins). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. Original prints of two of the most memorable of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present images are an extraordinary pair of photographs, one from a near face-on p.o.v., the other from right profile, of a large group of Zulu tribesmen, in warrior regalia, seated and watching a motion picture (in the first of the images the 16mm projector is visible in the background). The expressions of wonder and amusement are matchless. The pencil caption on the verso reads of the first reads: "The Zulus watched a western movie at dusk outdoors in the… Read More

The present image is a fine casual three-quarter portrait of Ulla Jacobsen holding a beribboned boating hat, while standing on the shores of a river with trees bending over the water in the background with a bend in the river in the distance. The image is identified as "Ulla Jacobsen in a relaxed moment" and "No. 582" in the series. Jacobsen (1929-1982) had the only speaking role for a woman in the film.
