Quarter calf, original paper covered boards, rubbing and wear to edges and corners with much of the paper covering worn. Rebacked, red morocco label, lettered in gilt. Foxing and browning and some ink marks, small tear to corner of E4 with no loss of text. Front pastedown has the ownership inscription of "Mrs Anne Cave, Barking Alley, 1761" and, opposite, on the recto of the front endpaper is inscribed "Elisbeath (sic) Castell, I.D". William Kenrick was a literary chancer. In 1751, Robert Dodsley had published, with great success, The Oeconomy of Human Life, a collection of short essays on correct moral and social behaviour, purportedly written by a Chinese philosopher. The lithographs (six plus the frontispiece) are in excellent condition.

Tokyo: Pacific Press Service 1982, 1982. First edition. Exhibition catalogue. pp. 112. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs by W. Eugene Smith. Bound in card, upper and lower cover illustrated. Illustrated paper slipcase with some tears but rare in any condition. The book is in superb condition. It is a catalogue of an exhibition organised by the Pacific Press Service whose founder was Robert Kirschenbaum. Kirschenbaum organised this retrospective of Eugene Smith's work in 1982, four years after Smith's death. The photographs, which are very nicely reproduced, cover a thirty year span and all aspects of Eugene Smith's work. This book is a presentation copy from Smith's widow, Ailen to the legendary photo editor John G. Morris. It is inscribed "To John, In memory of Shinjuku, Odakyu, March 21 1982, Best, Ailen M. Smith. Blind stamp of the Royal United Services Institute Library at head of title page. Half calf, marbled paper covered boards, rebacked and corners repaired. Red morocco label to spine, lettered in gilt. Upper cover a little scuffed and edges rubbed. Front pastedown has presentation bookplate of RUSI with disposal stamp. Slightly foxed but overall a very good copy of an important book which resulted in the election of Knowles to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. Knowles's work is a detailed study of the use and preservation of timber in ships. Leipzig: Ernst Oldenburg 1931, 1931. Special issue 12 of Alfred Koch's leading naturist magazine Körperbildung-Nacktkultur. 221x142mm. pp. 54, [10]. 24pp with 43 black and white photographs. In original paper covers illustrated with a naked couple dancing on the beach. Scuffing to four of the images with a little loss but otherwise a nice copy of a rare volume. Adolf Koch was one of the leading proponents of the Freikörperkultur and developed his own method of nude gymnastics. This issue of Körperbildung-Nacktkultur translates as "Pleasure in the Body" and contains, in addition to numerous photographs showing people taking pleasure in their bodies, articles on the Korperkultur movement in England and America, the practical work of Koch's gymnastics school and "Sex-Appeal und Nacktkultur".

A copy of Koudelka's first monograph, featuring striking portraits of eastern European Roma taken in eastern Slovakia in the late 1960s.

Zurich Der Kreis 1954, 1954. Hardcover. One hundred photographs of the male figure from ten years of Der Kreis magazine. A very good copy in green linen boards. There is some watermarking on the front cover which has affected the fore-edges the pages inside (which are slightly stained and crinkled) but generally this is a very good copy. As the introduction says, "This book of photographs is not available in bookstores; it is intended as a private edition for our comrades all over the world". The photographs "were chosen simply from the point of view of youthful charm and manly beauty. Varied as the pictures may be, we believe that they harmonize to form a hymn in praise of the masculine body". This copy comes with a bookplate "Ex Libris Carl Van Vechten". Van Vechten was a music and dance critic, photograher and novelist. He was also an early admirer of Gertrude Stein and her literary executor. Signed by Kroll on the frontispiece. A nice copy of an important sociological study. Offered with an original vintage print signed by Eric Kroll on the back and from his own collection. Part of the mount is cut out to show the signature. In very good condition. The photograph is reproduced in the book where the model is identified as 'Shelley [who] worked in a nude model studio in Baltimore, Maryland. The studio also offered "nude or semi-nude wrestling or boxing"'. Kroll photographs her in a relaxed, quasi-classical pose, in the manner of a Titian Venus or Ingres's Odalisque. Illustrated paper wrapper and publisher's band (obi). All in excellent condition with only the very slightest shelfwear. Illustrated throughout with almost no text apart from chapter headings in Japanese and English. Kurata's work is in the tradition of the photo-documentary. He captures, in both colour and black and white, everyday life in Japan from the mainstream to the counter-cultural. As Kurata writes in the introduction (text in English), these photographs were taken between the 1970s and the early 1990s and form "a nearly comprehensive survey of my "street photos" taken within the time and space of Japan".
