Description:
San Francisco: Paul Elder and Company, 1907. 8vo, pictorial tan cloth. Frontis., 226 pp., 15 sepia plates, woodcut head-pieces and initials. Second edition, revised and enlarged. A handsomely designed bird guide, reflecting the Arts & Crafts aesthetic of Paul Elder and Company. Charles Keeler, a resident of Berkeley, contributed much to Bay area cultural life in the early twentieth century. A poet as well as an ornithologist, Keeler was also an advocate of the Arts & Crafts Movement in architecture, commissioning architect Bernard Maybeck to design his house, "the first of many redwood-clad hillside homes designed by Maybeck, and the first in a cluster of influential First Bay Tradition houses in Berkeley, designed to blend in with their natural setting." (Wikipedia). Keeler's delight in the natural world, vividly expressed in the present work, partakes very much of the era of John Muir, with whom he was friends.CONDITION: very good, early ownership inscription on front paste-down.

Suncook, Pembroke, N.H., 1878. 12mo, original russet cloth, gilt title and decorative black stamping on front cover, lower cover with blind-stamped title and ornament. Frontis. portrait engraving, 63 pp., illus. On the morning of October 4, 1875, the beautiful 17-year-old Josie Langmaid did not show up for school. When Pembroke Academy staff notified her family, a search party was assembled. That night the party found her decapitated and violated body in the woods near the school and discovered her head the next morning. Following the initial arrest of innocent parties, the actual murderer was identified as French-Canadian woodcutter Joseph Lapage. Tried and found guilty, he admitted to his crime (as well as a similar murder in Vermont) on March 15th, 1878 and was hung the following day. The town of Pembroke placed a monument to the victim near the murder site, with directions to the sites where her body and head were discovered. Keeler's forty-page poetic eulogy is preceded by a brief account of… Read More

Description:
Bradford, MA: 1739. 1 p. manuscript document, 9" x 7.5". An interesting marriage financial agreement between Jonathan Kimball (1673-1749) of Bradford, Massachusetts and Jane Plummer of Rowley, Mass., signed by Jane Plummer, Joseph Pearson, John Hobson and Jonathan Kimball with two seals. Both parties widowed with a large number of children, Jonathan assures Jane that she will keep use of her estate and that on her death, her children will inherit all; in the event of his death, Jane will get 40 pounds and the "Least Lower Room" in his dwelling to live in. (Kimball married his first wife Lydia Day, in 1696; she died Sept. 16, 1739). Apparently, it was not a happy union as Jonathan's will states the following: "Since my wife Jane has eloped and refuses to live with me, I give her five shillings and a pair of leather gloves." This branch of the prestigious and prolific Kimball family originated with Richard Kimball, a wheelwright who migrated from England. His son "Cornet" Benjamin Kimball,… Read More
