Description:
Bradford, MA: 1739. 1 p. manuscript document, 9" x 7.5". An interesting marriage financial agreement between Jonathan Kimball (1673-1749) of Bradford, Massachusetts and Jane Plummer of Rowley, Mass., signed by Jane Plummer, Joseph Pearson, John Hobson and Jonathan Kimball with two seals. Both parties widowed with a large number of children, Jonathan assures Jane that she will keep use of her estate and that on her death, her children will inherit all; in the event of his death, Jane will get 40 pounds and the "Least Lower Room" in his dwelling to live in. (Kimball married his first wife Lydia Day, in 1696; she died Sept. 16, 1739). Apparently, it was not a happy union as Jonathan's will states the following: "Since my wife Jane has eloped and refuses to live with me, I give her five shillings and a pair of leather gloves." This branch of the prestigious and prolific Kimball family originated with Richard Kimball, a wheelwright who migrated from England. His son "Cornet" Benjamin Kimball,… Read more

Various locales, including New York, Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, and California, ca. 1858. Narrow 4to (302 x 152 mm), one cover only, marbled paper over board, leaves loose. 26 pp. of manuscript. An engaging manuscript narrative of a California gold rush voyage, including a harrowing account of passage through the Straits of Magellan and lively descriptions of places visited along the way.Theodore H. Klages left Hamilton, Ontario for California on 17 August 1858. The narrative offered here appears to be a polished version of his journal, and was likely written within a year or two of his voyage. Klages departs by train for New York City, passing through Niagara Falls and stopping in Albany. He remarks early on that he is about to traverse some 15,000 miles of water and conveys the danger of his coming voyage. Klages leaves New York on August 22 aboard the steamer Hermann with some 600 passengers. On Aug. 30, they cross the Tropic of Cancer, and the Captain celebrates with a small display of… Read more
