231 color woodcut plates bound in 4 volumes, stored in a custom green-cloth slip-case. The woodblock plates printed with natural vegetable dyes for true-to-life colors.
Vol. 1: 58 plates, Vol. 2: 58 plates
Supplements: Vol. 3: 60 plates, Vol. 4: 55 plates.
Condition: pale-blue paper covers slightly worn and grubby, but interior fresh and vibrant. First page in each volume with a large red illegible stamp (two on text pages, two on flower plates). A few plates with white flowers oxidized.
Bairei Kono (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator and art teacher famous for his botanicals and kacho-e (flower and bird) paintings.

150 colour woodcut botanicals printed by hand on hand-made paper, bound in blue stitched wrappers with red labels.
A superb botanical and pharmacopoeia japonica, includes flowers and vegetables as well as plants of commerce. Plants include Japanese magnolia, peony, clematis, tiger lily, iris, camellia, hibiscus, water lily, bitter gourd, taro, musk melon, etc.
Index of the illustrated plants in Vols. 1 and 2 in Japanese kanji characters, katakana and romaji alphabets. Index in katakana only in Vol. 3. Katakana and romaji titles and Japanese descriptive text in most images.
Condition: Blue paper covers slightly worn, but interior fresh and vibrant. All botanicals fresh and vivid with strong lines and natural colours.

Woodblock reprint of two famous Japanese picture scrolls which recorded the unsuccessful Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.The scrolls were originally drawn between 1275 and 1293 for the samurai Suenaga Takezaki to record his battlefield valor and deeds during Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan. The scrolls depict the Battle of Bun'ei in 1274 and the Battle of Koan in 1281.

Very good Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada II
Depicting a rather unusual scene from a Kabuki play with two actors holding up another actor as though he were a puppet in a Bunraku play.
Nakamura Fukusuke I is paraded like a Puppet of Yaoya Hanbei by two supporting actors Arashi Kangoro I as Yoshida Kango (right), and Nakamura Kangoro I as Yoshida Kanta (left).
The play is Na Nomi Yaoya Ryori no Futsutsuka, from Wakaki no Ume Satomi no Yatsufusa.
Published by Hayashiya Shogoro in Tokyo in Ansei 4 of the Edo Era (1857).
Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-1880) was a Japanese ukiyo-e print maker and head of the Utagawa school. He worked in many genres including theatre actors (yakusha-e), beauty pictures (bijinga), erotica (shunga), literary scenes. He never achieved the level of success of his master.
