Description:
4 volumes, 8v0, later half calf & marbled boards, rebacked with original spines laid on, 3 folding maps & 9 folding tables, xxiv, 591, [1] blank, [16]; [ii], 717,[1], [21]; [ii], 523,[1],[16]; [ii], 610,[8] pp. Edges rubbed, maps with some separation at folds,, edge wear and repaired tears, and occasional light foxing. The Duke de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt (1747-1827) was known to have some liberal political tendencies, but supported royalty through the French Revolution. Not surprisingly, he fled to England in 1794 shortly after the storming of the Bastille. He would travel to the United States and Canada in 1795, but would return to France four years later. During his travels in North America, he would tour New England, the Eastern Great Lakes, Upper Canada, and even the Southern United Sates. His commentary includes observations on farming, the quality of roads, shipping and whaling in New England, the Quakers, and Philadelphia society. He even makes a comment on how well read American women are.

Description:
8vo original printed wrappers 34 pp. Wrappers darkened, and a few chips and tears along the edges, wrappers a bit fragile, otherwise very good. According to Wagner-Comp, Lang and Taylor were two Quakers who visited tribes recently removed from east of the Mississippi to the west. For the most part, the pamphlet presents their observations about the Cherokees and other tribes that were expelled from Georgia and transported to the Indian Territory. Their report was originally presented at the Yearly Meeting of the Friends of New England and New York before it was published under the present title.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo original wrappers 47 pp. Front wrapper has remnant of paper sticker; and title page has library stamp. A few minor chips at the edges. Overall very good or better. Early work on the Western tribes, which takes a look at the impact of U.S. Government relocation policies. Lang and Taylor were Quakers who visited the Winnebago, Kickapoo, Cherokees, Choctaw, and Shawnees between August and December 1842. Not surprisingly, they were quite disturbed about what they found, and this report presents a case for immediate assistance. Interestingly, one of the concerns of the Native Americans was the possibility of yet another relocation. This is a first edition, and while it isn’t totally clear, the Providence issue may have been published before the New York edition, which came out in the same year.

Chromolithograph broadside, 16" x 20".Creases where folded, slight abrasion at the conjunction of one of the folds, some slight chipping to the lower right corner, and the left margin, which extend a little into image; still a colorful and unusual piece. A scarce early 20th century broadside version of the Emancipation Proclamation in the form of a WWI "uplift" poster. At the center is Abraham Lincoln holding a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. He is flanked with smaller images of Paul L. Dunbar, Frederick Douglas, Lt. Col. Franklin A. Dennison, and Lt. Col. Otis B. Duncan. Other images include soldiers, farmers, children at school, and a bald eagle perched on top of American Flags. We are reminded in the captions of some of the accomplishments of African American, and the promise of the future. A very attractive Broadside, even with a few imperfections.

Newspaper, 16" x 23", uncut, six columns of text, 8 pp. Folded at center, some tears and a little loss of text at center fold, but not significant, other chips, tears, and folds, mostly at extremities, some aging and browning, a little uneven darkening, uncut, and center pages probably never read; good or better for a newspaper, and still very presentable. Dated April 26, 1865 this paper covers events relating to the Lincoln funeral. The Herald reports that 750,000 stood in silence during the funeral procession, and that there were many disappointed mourners who didn't get a chance to join the 150,000 that had a chance to make it to view the body. The paper gives details about the funeral procession and the final church services for the slain president. An important piece of American History.

Newspaper, folio, unbound, 8pp. Dampstained, browned at edges with some foxing, early owner's ink stamp on top margin, some small tears and chips along edges, and a little creasing. Still in decent shape overall. This is one of the earliest printings of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued on September 22, 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for all slaves in any Confederate state that didn't return to the Union by January 1, 1863. Although this executive order did not actually free a large number of slaves, it set the stage for the freedom of all slaves. Coverage of the Emancipation in this newspaper begins in the middle of the first page. This newspaper article represents important coverage of a very significant event in American History. archives government exhibits emancipation website
