Description:
London: Willis and Sotheran, 1857 A good set in contemporary rebacked cloth bindings with 322 colour plates of birds, 102 colour plates of eggs and 8 black and white plates. The original cloth was probably a shade of green but it has sunned. It has been rebacked in a dark green relaying the original gilt-decorated spines which are mostly complete. The bindings are therefore sound and tight but there is a lot of wear to corners with varying degrees of bumping, corner turning, fraying and loss of cloth. Newer marbled endpapers have been added and each volume has an armorial bookplate of K I Beynon to the front pastedown, with the motto 'Gwell Dysg Na Golud' (the original motto of Llandovery College). Internally the volumes are complete and the plates are well-coloured. All the title pages have a small ink signature of Spencer Nicholl to the top. There is sporadic light marking which is mostly to margins, particularly the side margin and occasional foxing to text. The top margin has dark toning… Read More

Description:
London and Edinburgh: J Mawman and David Brown, 1815 A fair copy of this important work in newer quarter leather binding. John Laing was ship's surgeon on The Resolution, which sailed from Whitby via Lerwick in the Shetland Isles to the North Sea whale fisheries at Spitzbergen in 1806/7. The book is based on his notes at the time and general observations of his journey, and includes fascinating descriptions of the wildlife he saw. This copy is classed as 'fair' because the print is quite heavy and, in some sections, has offset to the preceding text page. The text is still readable. The binding is in near fine condition with gilt titles and blind tooled lines to spine, and marbled boards. There is slight fading to the spine and light wear. New endpapers and blanks. Contents: title; dedication; advert; journal pp 1-159; appendix pp 161-173 finis. There is some light spotting to the title and the occasional spot elsewhere. Paper is lightly toned, and, as stated above, there are sections of… Read More

Description:
London: Lovell Reeve, 1858 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates. Part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series where a number of authors were chosen to introduce their subjects to young people in a way that would give a good foundation while inspiring them to study further. This copy is in the original binding which is very bright and clean. The gilt decoration on the front board is slightly dulled. Spine ends have light pulling and there is light wear to corners. Contents complete with hand coloured frontispiece and 19 further plates. 1 page ad for the Literary Gazette at the rear. There is an ink inscription at the front free endpaper. Top and side page edges rough with the occasional very small edge tear. Contents are clean with light spotting which occasionally affects plates. Light marking to endpapers.

Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1810 A fair copy of the first English translation in the original publisher's paper and card binding with folding map and 2 plates. The binding, which was intended to be replaced by the new owner, is rubbed and worn and losing the paper surface to the boards. It is complete and currently sound. Internally there is an old signature to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents: folding map; title; author's preface pp ii-vii; errata 1p; contents list ix-xiv; text pp 1-426 finis; 2 plates of which one folding at the rear. Page edges are uncut. There is a small paper flaw hole in the margin of p vii; a slight mark in the margin of p 1; a small burn hole at p 43 affecting 2 letters of text; occasional turning to page corners; and some water staining to the bottom corners of both plates not affecting the image. There is a dark fleck in the paper at p 113 and a small round area of thin paper in the bottom margin of p 401. There is some old drawing and calculation on… Read More

Description:
London: John Wilson, 1830 A fair copy in the original publisher's temporary boards with untrimmed pages. Written in pre-antibiotic days when venereal disease was on the increase - with some heart-rending case studies including a woman infected by her husband and the impact on the children. Inscribed 'from the author' on a preliminary. Classed as 'fair' because the binding, although currently sound, is very worn at the spine and edges and is grubby; and internally there are library marks. This copy was part of a bequest from Arthur Jacob to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland library in 1871 (and therefore it is possible that Jacob was the original receipient of the book from the author). Jacob has put his name in capitals at some points (including the title page and the reverse of the last contents page and at the end) and there is a library stamp to the title page. With pasted publisher's advert, inscription from author, title page, advertisement, contents listing, and… Read More

Description:
London : J Johnson, 1795 A very good copy of this scarce title, with 46 superb hand coloured plates. William Lewin (1747-1795) intended this work to be the first volume of 'The Insects of Great Britain' series. However he died in 1795 with only this volume completed. This is the rare first issue which has the series title page and ends 'End of Volume I'. The second issue amends the title to the 'Papilios of Great Britain' making it stand-alone. This copy is a later half vellum binding with blind stamped decoration to the buckram boards. Page edges have light marbling and the endpapers are marbled. The binding is in very good condition. There is corner wear particularly to the bottom corners, which are bumped with leather loss. Contents: title pages in French and English; half title page 'The insects of Great Britain'; text in French and English with 46 hand coloured plates; index 3pp. There are 2 mispaginations: plate 6 with text is placed after plates 7 and 8; and… Read More

Description:
London : Awnsham Churchill, 1682 A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. LONDON: James Nelson & Co, 1859 A good copy of the 3rd edition in the original decorative cloth binding, with 60 hand coloured plates. There is uneven fading to the boards and the spine is faded with a couple of spots. There is wear to edges, spine ends, joints and corners (very turned) with some cloth loss but the binding is clean and sound. Original yellow endpapers present with spotting which continues over the half title and slightly affects the title page at the beginning, and affects the final index leaf and the verso of the rear free endpaper at the end. Description:
LONDON: William S Orr & Co, 1846 A poor copy of this beautiful work with 60 hand coloured plates. Classed as poor because the title page is missing; the binding is poor - in marked plain cloth and beginning to detach; and there is a little marking internally. The pagination matches our other 2nd edition copy so this is presumed as second, dated to 1846. The plates are in good condition - there is some brown spotting to edges, and around 3 have a darkened section, again at the edge not affecting the flower image (we have noticed only one plate with a light mark affecting the flower). All have tissue guards - one guard is torn and one has a small hole - most guards have marking. A few text pages have a little marking and p 117 has a repaired tear to the top margin. The final index page has a small hole at the top. This copy would be well worth rebinding.

Description:
Edinburgh and London: Archibald Constable and Company; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown - and White, Cochrane and Co, 1813 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition in contemporary half morocco binding. George Low arrived in Orkney to tutor in Stromness and later became the Minister of Birsay and Harray. He had a lifelong interest in natural history and was asked to accompany Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Solander when they landed in Orkney returning from Cooke's last voyage. Joseph Banks introduced him to Pennant and he drew on his knowledge and support in classifying the fauna that he saw. He died in 1795 - and the work was published by William Elford Leach, who acted as editor, noting that Pennant had also done some revisions. This copy is red morocco leather with marbled boards, endpapers and page edges. The spine has small raised bands with decorative gilt compartments and titles. Description:
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. This copy, in contemporary full leather binding, formed part of the Selbourne Library - acquired by the late Hugh Selbourne - and has the Selbourne Library stamp to the verso of the title page, and the bottom margin of p 51.… Read More
