Description:
Akron, Oh: Independent Labor League, 1943. Stapled Wrappers. Fine. Only edition of this full-throated left-wing program to advance labor interests, published in the midst of the Second World War and couched in strongly antifascist terms. Slim demy 8vo (207 x 151mm): 15,[1]pp, with two illustrations. Original blue staple-bound wrappers printed in black, wood- (or lino-) cut vignette to front cover. Virtually pristine example of this rare pamphlet, with only two copies noted by Worldcat (Ohio State University and the Wisconsin Historical Society Library). Perhaps the work of Burr McCloskey, labor organizer and later publicist, who in 1943 edited the Independent Labor League's newspaper, The Sentinel, and in 1956 ran as a third-party candidate for vice-president. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine… Read More

London: Fortune Press, 1965. Early Reprint. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Second (unauthorized) Edition, originally published by the Fortune Press in 1945. Tall, slim 8vo: [4],36pp. Publisher's smooth maroon buckram (some copies bound in brownish-orange buckram, no priority known), spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed; beige dust jacket (Bloomfield calls it pale orange, but to my eye there is very little, if any, orange in it) printed in black, priced 21s. Possibly run off from the same plates as the first edition, with the copyright page still reading "First Published 1945," though this edition appeared in a larger format than the original (9 1/8'' x 5 5/8'' vs. 7 1/8" x 5"). A virtually pristine, unread copy, completely free of foxing and wear, in Fine jacket. Bloomfield A1(b). This pirated edition, limited to 500 copies, was issued in advance of the authorized Faber & Faber release (on Sepember 15,1966), but was swiftly withdrawn when Larkin discovered its existence. Crown 8vo: viii,140,16pp. Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed (variant 1. MacDonald 9. Fabes & Foyle (second series), p. 49. According to Macdonald, "Copies with the catalogue would seem to be rare. . . . Copies without the catalogue are 'easy' . . . " "Because of its position in Lawrence's oeuvre, Amores (1916) has not received as much critical attention as the volume that followed, Look! We Have Come Through (1917). Grouped with the 'Rhyming Poems,' Amores predates the more experimental, Whitmanesque free verse through which Lawrence has exerted his enduring influence. But while… Read More

London: R. K. Burt & Co, 1878. First Edition. Wrappers. Near Fine+. Sole edition of this detailed survey of sightings of the white Beluga whale, beginning in the 1860s. Demy 8vo (215 x 139mm): 16 pp. Original pale yellow wrappers printed in black. Blind bookseller's stamp to lower cover (Willing & Co., 366 Gray's Inn Road), which is lightly dust-soiled and edge-nicked. A collectible survival. Lee was appointed a director of the Royal Aquarium, in Brighton, in 1872, where a female beluga whale, captured near Labrador, was exhibited for three days, before it died and was autopsied. His account includes a natural history of Beluga whales and references to historic sources going back to Guillaume Rondelet, the French sixteenth naturalist. Unsurprisingly, no mention is made of Moby Dick, since Melville's creation was, of course, an albino sperm whale, not a Beluga. N. B.
