Small 8vo, 168 x 103 mms., pp. [iv], 176, contemporary sheepskin; no endpapers, title-page soiled, worn, and creased with portion of imprint lost; text a bit grubby; binding worn, chipped, and rubbed. A poor copy. With the bookplates of Philip Gosse and Pamela and Raymond Lister on the front paste-down endpaper. � The French writer and translator Anne de La Roche-Guilhem or La Roche-Guilhen was born in 1644 in Rouen, and died in either 1707 or 1710 in England. She was the "daughter of Charles de Guilhen and Marie-Anne d'Azemar", and was, "by her mother, a grand-niece of the poet Antoine Girard de Saint-Amant. A Londres, & se trouve à Paris, Chez Buisson..., 1786. 12mo, pp. 359 [360 blank], including half-title, contemporary quarter calf, gilt spine, morocco label, marbled boards; bookplate removed from front paste-down end-paper, names in ink on free end-papers, but a very good copy. In "Towards a Sterne Bibliography" (The Winged Skull, 1971), Kenneth Monkman notes (no. 73) that "Despite the imprint, a Paris-printed edition, purged of all anti-Popery." The translation is by Antoine Gilbert Griffet de la Beaume, with pseudonymous initials. ESTC on-line locates copies in L, B, C, Dt, LEu; CLU-C; and TOu and WWs.

Small 8vo, pp. [ii], 203 [204 blank]; [ii], 208, contemporary calf; lacks labels, spine worn, volume 2 spine broken at pp. 94 - 95, with the volumes thus in two pieces, alas. Contemporary autograph (dated 1772 on first page of text of each volume) of Samuel Brown in several places in each volume.

A Dijon, de l'Imrimerie de L. N. Frantin, 1797,. 2 volume in 1. 8vo, 193 x 120 mms., pp. [ii], 251 [252 blank]; [ii], 243 [244 blank, 245 -246 contents, 257 - 258 blank], including half-titles, uncut and largely unopened, a "waste paper" binding, with covers deriving from displaced leaves of the printer. The sort of binding that increases the heartbeat of those of us interested in the history of the book. Louis-Nicolas Frantin was probably one of France's best printers, and certainly the best in Dijon. This appears to be one of only 24 copies printed on Holland paper, but there are several in libraries and on offer in the antiquarian book marketplace that make one doubt that limitation number or the accuracy of various descriptions, including mine and that of a previous bookseller. Sterne's Sentimental Journey was first published in 1768 and translated into French in 1769. The translation here is by Joseph-Pierre Frenais.

Paris: Sold by Theophilus Barrois, Bookseller Quai des Augustins, no. 18, 1783. 12mo, pp. [iii] - xx, 205 [206 blank], including half-title, contemporary sheepskin; worn, rubbed and dried. Pages [vii] - xx contain "Some Account of the Life and Writings of Mr. Sterne." A second edition was published in the same year, "Second edition., Revised by M. D***.." Barrois was one of the publishes of the first French edition in English, which he and J. N. Pissot published in 1780, printed by J. G. A Stoupe. Copac gives a pagination of xx, 205; this copy may lack a blank leaf before the half-title, as the leaf following the title-page, with the account of Sterne's life is signed aiv. However, the last leaf in the text is a singleton, signed K, and that probably accounts for the error in pagination, with leaf K having been printed with the preliminary material.

London: Printed for the Author: And Sold by G. Keith; G. Robinson; and T. Luckman, in Coventry, 1781. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), pp. xii, 150 [151 author's note, 152], contemporary tree calf, gilt spine; lacks label, front joint slightly cracked (but firm). A very good copy. Butterworth's sentiments on free speech are impeccable: "Every man, in this free country, is at full liberty to propose his sentiments to the public, and to defend those sentiments by the best arguments he is able to produce." His argument in favour of revealed religion is that it gives poor, miserable sinners the prospect of a "higher state of perfection" than that enjoyed by Adam and Eve. Hering with his pink ticket on the upper margin of the verso of the front free end-paper, in contemporary straight grain red morocco, double gilt borders on covers, with gilt fleurons at each corner, gilt spine, all edges gilt; front joint very slightly rubbed, but a very good and attractive copy with the autograph "J. [or S] Hafford" on the top margin of the title-page, armorial bookplate of Viscount Granville, probably Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville (1773 - 1846). A fine set, though I think the text has probably been washed. The first printing of this collection of erotic and satiric verse that I have located is dated 1613 [1623], it was republished several times in the 17th and 18th centuries and well into the 19th century. The main author was Nicolas Vauquelin, seigneur des Yveteaux (1567 - 1649), and a large number of authors made contributions. Lavergne's work is based on research carried out in 1851 and 1852.

Despite the apparent absence of 2 leaves after the Contents, the text appears complete; p. [13] is the first page in gathering B. The leaf after the title-page is signed A3, but the verso is paginated "iv," and the work may lack a half-title or initial blank, as the frontispiece is tipped onto the title-page. Other copies of this work have a four-page Preface following the Contents. The earliest edition that I can locate with this exact title in ESTC is one printed in 1773 in Edinburgh; the latest is 1797, a year before the imprint in this case, printed in Salem, Massachusetts. Large 8vo, 225 x 122 mms., pp/ [3] - 146 [147 Note, 148 blank], including half-title, four full-page engraved places facing each of the four cantos, engraved tail-pieces, contemporary calf, gilt borders on covers, neatly rebackd with darker calf, gilt spine, black leather labels. A very good copy. Maria H. Motolieu published this translation of Jacques De Lille's poems in 1798, with attractive plates by Bartolezzi, which are also reproduced in this volume, She established herself as an able translator, and her The Enchanted Plants. Fables in Verse (1800) and The Festival of the Rose (1802) proved to be very popular.

London: Printed for Darton and Harvey..., 1807. 12mo (in 6s), 138 x 85 mms., pp. 128 [129 - 132 adverts], contemporary sheepskin; several leaves sprung,rear hinge cracked, shaken in casing, corners a bit dog-eared, text giving every sign of frequent usage, binding rubbed, with contemporary ownership inscription, "Samuel Henson/ his Book/ 11mo 13th/ 1809" on the recto of the front free end-paper, "H.Venner" on the verso of the rear free end-paper, and "Daniel Henson/ His Book/ 1810" on the rear paste-down end-paper. Lindley Murray (1745 - 1826) published his English Grammar in 1795, with the Abridgment following shortly in 1797. Both proved to be far more successful than anyone anticipated. Both English Grammar and the Abridgment were published in numerous editions in the early 19th century, but very few seem to have survived, which is not too surprising for a school text-book.
