Description:
Boston: Printed by Rand, Avery, & Co, 1872. Duodecimo (17 x 11 cm.), [4], 3-69, [1] pages. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. A collection of prescriptions, formulae, and receipts, gathered by the author for the use of the traveler. "The language is in plain English, so that every person can go into the woods and pastures, and collect roots and herbs suited to his disease; or they can be obtained at the apothecaries'" (Preface). The recipes are organized by malady - not by herb or root - and so the work is not technically an herbal, but the spirits remains, and the image of the dyspeptic coach passenger foraging by the roadside illumines what must have been a common need for self-treatment still at that late date. Printed, paper covered boards over brown cloth spine. Some light soiling to covers and to text block. Near very good. Rare. [OCLC locates one copy (AAS)].

Paris: Au sans Pareil, 1927. Small quarto, 131, [2] pages. (24x18.5cm). First trade edition. A translation, by the artist, of Toye and Adair's, Drinks: Long & Short, originally issued in London in 1925. Much more than a translation, this beautiful re-imagining of the book, by one of France's most prolific and imaginative printmakers. In a custom binding, unsigned, with an original drawing for the design of the binding used as an endpaper. The binding is quarter black morocco, gilt-titled and decorated with ornaments in the shape of bunches of grapes. Some light foxing throughout. Original pochoir Art-Deco wrappers bound-in. The owner of the book, W.P. Dudley of Chicago, was a fixture on the Palm Beach social circuit, arriving for the opening of The Breakers. His name is gilt-stamped on the front board. Throughout the book, Dudley has seen fit to comment in pencil, correcting recipes he views as errant, and criticizing or praising cocktails as he sees fit. Some of his commentary is detailed, and some… Read More

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, Publishers, no. 18, Ann Street, 1885. Octavo (19 x 13 cm.), 312 [2] pages. Publisher's advertisements. Index, really a table of contents. Later printing; originally published by R. Craighead (New York) in 1853. Perhaps the most broadly used work on making hundreds of wines and spirits from a neutral base alcohol, with extensive descriptions of the materials and techniques used to create these dishonest drinks. Cheating aside, the book provides significant information on the various ingredients - oils, essences, herbs, etc. - used as flavorants. ~ Slightest spotting to edges of text block, otherwise clean and bright. In publisher's green pebbled cloth, gilt-titled to the spine. Very near fine. With the ownership stamp of Louis H. Hellert to front and rear endpapers. Description:
Utica, N.Y.: Converse & Co., Job Printers, 38 Arcade, 1884. Octavo (20.8 x 13.7 cm.), 49, [3] pages. Advertisements. FIRST EDITION. A slim but very enjoyable community cookbook, issued by a woman's church group from Utica, in Central New York State. The recipes, in narrative form, are often but not always attributed. Most pleasing is the array of typefaces used throughout, in the recipe titles and especially in the advertisements. Advertisers include S.S. Converse - "Dropsy Treated Free!", A.L. Owens' Dairy Parlors, Ferrill's Ladies' Oyster Parlor, E.E. Corliss' Human Hair Goods, Geo. Clark's Glove and Mitten Factory, and The Casino! amongst many more. ~ "Dame Durden" was a sort of shorthand for "housewife", with origins deep in English folk songs and tales. Dickens' Esther in Bleak House was referred to as Dame Durden and a song about her was sung by Gabriel Oak in Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. The song was sung to celebrate spring and the fecundity it brings. "Dame Durden" was used as the nom… Read More

Susanville, Lassen County, California: [the club: Lassen Advocate, 1914. Octavo (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), 100, [11] pages. Index. Advertisements at rear. Evident FIRST EDITION. A community cookbook produced by the Monticola Club, founded in 1912 by Philenda Spencer, apparently inspired by the passage of the bill that recognized the rights of California women to vote. The club was located in Susanville, on the banks of the Susan River in Honey Lake Valley, on the far side of the Lassen National Park in northeastern California. Early activities of the club members included naming passes and peaks in the national park, and in 1920 they built a public swimming hole on the Susan River. Most of the recipes in the book are attributed to their contributors, usually members of the club or the committee in this case, and the sections, all fairly brief, are arranged in an odd order, starting with Oysters and Fish, Pickles and Relish, and Desserts. A bit of wear to the rear cloth hinge (interior) and a good number of… Read More

List of contributors, and in the rear a separate Appendix of the names of contributors "sent in after 'The List of Contributors' was in press". ~ Evident FIRST EDITION. A church-based community cookbook. Margaret Cook records this as the second cookbook published in Texas, following The Texas Cook Book. But as The Texas Cook Book was printed in St. Louis, this is the first cookbook printed in the state of Texas. A rare collection of recipes, compiled by the Ladies of St. Paul's Guild, Waco, Texas, and issued for the elimination of $800 of the Church's debt. The list of contributors is extensive and consist of five pages; these individuals are almost all women, principally from Texas, but we see contributions from residents of California and New York; cf. the name of Henry Ward Beecher, the social reformer, whose contribution must have been added around the time of his death in 1887.
