Description:
[16], 540, [10], [2 blank] pp.Rare first edition of a travelogue by the French explorer, merchant and diplomat François de la Boullaye-Le Gouz (ca.1610-1669). The largest part of the book deals with his travels through the Midde East and India, while a smaller parts treats Le Gouz's travels through Europe. In 1643 he travelled the Middle East under the name Ibrahim Beg, visiting Syria, Palestine, Persia, Egypt, Anatolia and Armenia. A few years later he was send by the French king with an embassy to the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan, where he met and became great friends with the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660). La Boullaye-Le Gouz describes the routes he takes, the cities he visits and the people he meets along the way, with frequent observations on religion, natural history and commerce. The illustrations show various Indian deities, some city views or buildings, Indian and Eastern costumes, plants and trees. Description:
XIV, [2], 268, [2], 16; VIII, [2], 306, [8], [2 blank] pp.Beautiful, splendidly illustrated copy of the tales of La Fontaine in the so-called fermiers généraux edition. Originally published in 1665, La Fontaine's "lighthearted and bawdy yet literary and poetic" (Adams) short stories were reprinted numerous times in the following century. The licentious tales were officially frowned upon in France, but publication was tolerated as long as it was suggested that the book was printed outside of the country. France outsourced the collection of customs and taxes to the fermiers généraux, and when the philosophes criticised it sharply in the 1750s and 1760s for the luxurious style of living of its members, they reacted by commissioning an edition of La Fontaine's tales. With this luxurious and decadent publication, gifted to influential people over the next decades, the fermiers hoped to win over powerful patrons to their cause.Although bearing an "Amsterdam" imprint, the two volumes were in fact… Read More

At the end of the biography, the author states that this edition was especially intended for young people, which is also reflected by the fact that below each fable there are some explanatory notes for children. The beautiful engravings, including that on the title-page were drawn from the magnificent series by Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) in the 1755-1759 Paris edition of La Fontaine's fables.Binding slightly rubbed, especially around the spine, worn around the edges, corners a little bumped, some stains on the paste-downs and endpapers, pp. XXV-XXVI erroneously bound in between pp. X-XXI even as pp.… Read More

46, [1], [1 blank]; [3], [1 blank], 34; 64; 51, [1 blank] pp.Rare first and only Latin editions (probably the first and only early editions in any language) of four closely related polemical pamphlets on European policy toward the Ottoman Empire. The publication was instigated by the prominent Nürnberg poet and jurist Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (1607-1658), who somehow got access to the French manuscripts of the pro-Richelieu Peristromata Turcica (Turkish carpets), and the anti-Richelieu Gallia deplorata, translated them into Latin, edited them for publication and added what is believed to be his own anti-French Latin rebuttal of the former, Germania deplorata. On 26 November 1641 he sent all three to the Calvinist Prince Ludwig of Anhalt-Köthen, founding president of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft in Weimar, who found the Peristromata Turcica shocking and dangerous, not only for its content but also because its remarkable and "seductive" graphic form. [8], 249, [1] pp.First and only early edition, in Latin, of a comprehensive and influential text book on conic sections, discussing the standard classical Greek work of Apollonius, the projective methods of Desargues and the application of Cartesian analytical geometry, by the artist, mathematician and astronomer Philippe de La Hire, "among the best of the followers of Desargues and Descartes" (DSB). It "seemed to be the last word on the subject" and La Hire's "pre-eminence in this field" was still acknowledged in 1738 (Kemp, p. 121). La Hire here provides the clearest and most fully developed presentation of the projective principles pioneered by Desargues, whose work became generally known through La Hire's further development and improved presentation of his ideas. The author and artist of the work was Gijsbert van Laar (1767-1820), a Dutch garden architect and nurseryman. The work essentially presents an encyclopaedic pictorial survey of all available varieties of garden houses, ruins, sculptures, gates and bridges, garden furniture and decorations, and even designs for monuments for deceased children. Van Laar based his designs on and was inspired by "the best international works", such as J.G. Grohmann's Ideenmagazin für Liebhaber von Gärten ... (Leipzig 1796-1806), John Plaw's Ferme ornée; or rural improvements (London 1795) and other works. The complete work eventually consisted of 24 instalments, including 190 plates, which were published by Allart between 1802 and 1809. The mysterious disappearance of the great French explorer Jean François Galaup de La Pérouse, led to much speculation in France. On 9 February 1791 the Constituent Assembly passed a decree ordering, among other things, that the King be petitioned to order the fitting out of one or more ships equipped with naturalists, other scientists and draughtsman, with the two-fold mission of searching for De la Pérouse and of making inquiries relative to the sciences and to commerce. Two ships, under the command of Captain Kermadec, proceeded via the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania, they made extensive investigations of its coastline. They also visited New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, the Admiralty Islands, Tonga, New Britain and other groups, making extensive inquiries, but found no trace of the missing navigator (Ferguson). The author, Joseph François Lafitau (1681-1746), was the son of a rich merchant and travelled as a missionary to Canada in 1711, where he tried to convert the Iroquois Indians to Christianity. He made "a thorough study of Iroquois character and usages, as a preparation for his great work Moers des sauvages ..." (Howgego). It deals extensively with the religion of the Iroquois, referring to other "primal" religions in Brazil and the Antilles, but also to ancient Greek and Roman rites. Other chapters deal with the Iroquois government, marriage, warfare, trade, hunting, burial, etc., all illustrated in great detail. [4], 23, [1] pp.First and only edition of a brief treatise by Seger Lakenman on reinforcing the dikes of West-Friesland, now the northern part of the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. The dikes were dangerously weakened because "sea worms" were voraciously eating their wooden piles. In 1732 the States of Holland and West-Friesland proclaimed a contest for a better type of dike. Lakenman responded with the present work, suggesting, among other things, the construction of a new inner dike, a so-called "inlaagdijk", and also including the estimated costs. His proposal, however, was rejected by the States. On the title-page Lakenveld is mentioned as the secretary of "Drechterland", a small community in the Dutch province of North Holland. Some marginal thumbing, a few small stains, and the plates very slightly browned, but otherwise in good condition, with the edges wholly untrimmed. 245 pp.First edition of a beautifully colour-illustrated account of the city of Tunis and its surroundings, by the French watercolour artist Charles Lallemand (1826-1904), who was responsible for both the illustrations and the text. The text is divided into 20 chapters covering various subjects, such as mosques, religion, antiquities, coffeeshops and Muslim women, all with relevant illustrations. Many include Islamic decorative patterns in addition to views of architectural or cultural sites and costume prints, and they document a great deal of Muslim culture that has since been lost. In the present copy nearly two-thirds of the chromolithographs are present in two versions, one with letterpress text as usual, and one without letterpress text. The book was re-printed or re-issued in 1892. With occasional very minor foxing and with the half-title slightly browned. De Lascaris was born in Piedmont, Italy, most likely in the last quarter of the 18th century and was a knight on Malta when Napoleon captured the island in 1798 and he subsequently followed Napoleon to Egypt. According to the translator and compiler of the work Alphonse de Lamartine, De Lascaris was bright and thus was able to capture Napoleon's attention. Together, they set their sights on conquering Asia, which would as an addition to Napoleon's Empire render more glory. De Lascaris was essentially appointed as Napoleon's spy, received secret instructions and the necessary funds in order to examine how they could go about conquering parts of Western Asia and even to trace out a road to India. [6], 102, [2 blank] pp.First edition of Lambrecht's account of the Dutch colony in America up to its cession to England in 1674, as well as an account of the fate of the Dutch settlers after the British takeover. It covers the discovery and exploration of the regions around present-day New York, the Dutch relations with the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts Bay, and the English takeover. New York was beginning to establish itself as America's leading city in the early nineteenth century, and a growing interest in its history made the history of the Dutch colony topical. The folding map, entitled "Kaart van Nieuw-Nederland" combines an up-to-date cartographic image based on Aaron Arrowsmith's 1804 Map of America, with historical data from maps in Arent Roggeveen's 1675 sea atlas and Arnoldus Montanus's 1671 atlas of America. colour drawing of the transport of Russian and British prisoners-of-war in the aftermath of the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland in 1799. As part of the War of the Second Coalition, an expeditionary force of British and Russian troops invaded North Holland in the Batavian Republic, the Dutch state established by and allied with the French Republic. After 5 weeks of fighting against a combined army of Batavian and French forces, the badly supplied Anglo-Russian army capitulated and was able to negotiate a strategic withdrawal and the exchange of prisoners-of-war.Together with his father Dirk (1748-1805), Jan Anthonie Langendijk visited the battlefield a few days before the final retreat of the Anglo-Russian troops, as well as other parts of the country where the effects of the campaign were visible, either through the mobilisation of the armies or the presence of prisoners-of-war.
