A complete catalogue of the Little Republic Series by Elzevier. This famous publishing family was among the foremost European publishers. Louis Elzevier began his career as a pupil of Christopher Plantin in Antwerp, and later moved to Leiden where his son began the Elzevier publishing industry. This catalogue was first published in Sallengre's Memoires des literature II, 2, (The Hague, 1717), and independently, but in abbreviated form in 1842 and 1854. Aside from Elzevier's own catalogues this is the first bibliography of the publications of Elzevier. It lists all the books of the "Little Republic Series", arranged alphabetically by name of the country, and has an extensive appendix of other books about these countries, published by the Elzeviers or other Dutch publishers. Bigmore & Wyman say: "A reprint of a life of the inventor of printing, contributed to an encyclopaedic publication with which Lamartine was connected. It has no historical value, but treats the matter in a romantic style... Lamartine was born at Macon, Burgundy, October 21, 1790 and died at Paris, February 28, 1869. His name is popular and classical, not only in France, where for nearly thirty years he held the sceptre of poetry, and during four months the sceptre of power, but also throughout the world, for his works were translated into every language. His memoirs however, belong rather to the political history of France than to a technical work like the present..."

Bernard Lamy (15 June 1640 – 29 January 1715) was a French Oratorian, mathematician and theologian. His best known work is the Traité de Mécanique (1679), showing the parallelogram of force. The parallelogram of forces is a method for solving (or visualizing) the results of applying two forces to an object. The last (folding) plate shows perpetual movement.

1789. A Paris, chez M. le Brun rue du Gros-Chenet, 1789. x,30 pp. 93 items described, with prices and names added in ink in a contemporary hand in the margin. Nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards (spine damaged). Paul-Henri Thiry, Baron d'Holbach (1723 – 1789) was a philosopher, translator, and prominent social figure of the French Enlightenment. For the Encyclopédie d'Holbach wrote and translated a large number of articles on topics ranging from politics and religion to chemistry and mineralogy. Money was not a problem for d'Hoblach and he maintained one of the more notable and lavish Parisian salons, which soon became an important meeting place for the contributors to the Encyclopédie. It was at once a shelter for radical thought and a hub of mainstream culture. The present catalogue presents his collection of art containing a.o. works by Wouvermans, Berchem, Vanmol, Teniers, Poussin, le Sueur and Mengs and many engravings.

Complete set of this late seventeenth century magazine, published in Amsterdam, made up of various editions but all from the same provenance. Vol. I - XXI all in one volume ; (I & II from the second edition of 1687 ; vol. XVII & XVIII & XIX from the second edition of 1699 ; vol. XX, third edition 1702 ; vol. Dutch translation of Le Clerc's 'Traité d'architecture, avec des remarques et des observations très utiles pour les jeunes gens qui veuilent s'appliquer à ce bel art'. This was first published in Paris in 1714. The work was translated into Dutch in 1781 by Pierre Esaie Duyvené, himself an architect. It was also he who copied the engravings. He explains in the introduction that he tried to get enough prints from the original plates but after learning that the plates did not exist anymore he found himself obliged to do the engravings for his edition himself. Le Gallois, noted 17th century Parisian bibliographer and author describes both the libraries of antiquity and of his time. Excellent accounts of the important public and private libraries of Spain, Germany, the Low Countries, England, Scandinavia and France. (paper slightly browned and some occasional very light foxing. Small old restorations in the margins of sheets G2, Y1 and plates 1 & 3; some wormholes in the inner margins of sheets O to Bb, all with old restaurations and some light staining in the margins of a few sheets). (minor rubbing and a small crack near the top of front, back hinge cracked). Previous owner's name on front pastedown. A small fraction of the pages show minor soiling, a pencil notation or a short closed tear and one small cut-out. Fold-out at the end has an edge which is crumpled and a small tear. Two supplements laid in, a detailed listing of fonts and type faces, and a list of prices for vignettes. This encyclopedic specimen book of the Leipzig type foundry and printing supply house J.G. Schelter & Giesecke features, as the title indicates, all kinds of decoration for supplying printing of every type. On the title page, the firm boasts of winning a grand prize in 1900 in Paris (presumably at the Exposition Universelle).
