A beautifully bound copy of this verse novel, the work of Jean-Claude Bozerian (1762-1840), "one of the leading, if not the leading Parisian binder of the period 1790 to 1810. His work was in great demand by leaders of the regime and prominent bibliophiles" (Knott, p. 86). First published in 1669, this edition of Les Amours de Psyché et Cupidon was published for le Comte d'Artois, later Charles X (1757-1836). It was part of his Collection d'ouvrages français, en vers et en prose, a series of 64 small volumes printed in limited press-runs between 1780 and 1784. 2 volumes, duodecimo (130 x 76 mm). The notorious fraudster pleads her innocence First edition in English, signed by the author on page 261 as issued, giving the confidence trickster's own account of her role in the Diamond Necklace Affair, a monumental fraud which contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution. The Diamond Necklace Affair was a cause célèbre across Europe in the 1780s. The incident involved the acquisition of an expensive diamond necklace in the name of Marie Antoinette in 1784. Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy (1756-1791), the self-proclaimed "Comtesse de la Motte" (though in fact she and her husband were of doubtful lineage), forged letters from the Queen purchasing the necklace, then dismantled it and sold the diamonds on the black market. The complicated web of actors involved has never been entirely unweaved, and many conflicting accounts spread through Europe. Atlas du Voyage de la Perouse., [c.1785]. Interesting chart of part of the south-western Pacific, showing the routes taken by the Spanish explorer Don Francisco Antonio Maurelle in 1781 along the northern coast of New Guinea and across the Pacific to Fiji and Tonga. Maurelle was credited with the discovery of the Hermit Islands on this voyage. The map includes the north-eastern coast of Australia, and parts of the coast of New Guinea. The map shows the 1781 route of his ship "The Princesa" through the Bismarck Archipelago north of New Guinea, through the Archipel de Salomos [i.e. Solomon Islands] and then east across the Pacific to the Iles de Amis [i.e. the Friendly Islands, now Tonga] where he discovered I. This is how this part of La Pérouse's journey was described in a diary: 'On 11 August, they reached the southwestern point of Sakhalin Island, which La Pérouse named Cap Crillon (Mys Kril'on). The ships anchored near Mys Kril'on and Vaujuas went ashore where he met more Ainu people, some of whom also visited the ship. The ships began to sail through the strait the next day.
