Description:
Vienna. -. Folded, and somewhat rumpled.. One page, approx. 9 X 11-1/2 in. Secretarial letter signed by Laube, as director of the Vienna Stadttheater, returning two plays the Karpeles had submitted for consideration. Laube adds a lengthy postscript offering encouragment to Karpeles and praising his dramatic efforts. Karpeles would become well-known as a critic and a scholar of Heinrich Heine, and never enjoyed much success as a dramatist. Heinrich Laube (1806-1884) was a highly successful writer and a member of the radical "Junges Deutschland" movement in the 1830s. By 1848 he was one of the best-known playwrights in Germany and he was elected to the Frankfurter Nationalversammlung, but resigned to take up his post as director of the Burgtheater in Vienna. Later, after his retirement, he would found the Stadttheater.
